BESSIE VICTORIA RAUB MOORHEAD6
3097. BESSIE VICTORIA RAUB6 (Arthur Bradley Raub5, Sarah Martin4, Lydia Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 15 February 1889 in Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa and died 4 July 1960. She is listed as a Bessie Raub in the county birth records, her parents names are given as Arthur and Mary Raub (Bossart n.d.; Martin-Rott n.d.; Muscatine County IAGenWeb). She appears on the 1895 Iowa state census as a six year old child living in Sweetland Township with her parents, siblings and granfather Raub (1895 Iowa State Census). The 1900 federal census gives her age as 11 and states that she was attending school (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 112, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 4B, 9 June 1900).
Bessie's father died in August 1909, when Bessie was 20 years old. Eight months later, when the census was enumerated, Bessie was employed as a school teacher. She still lived at home on the family farm in Sweetland. Her mother was listed in the census as the farm manager and her brother Clarence as the farmer. Bessie's sister Gertie was listed with no occupation, but she was probably keeping house for the family. Bessie's youngest siblings, Herbert and Mary, were in school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 117, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 4A, 22 April 1910). Bessie probably continued to teach school up to the time that she married. She was married on 10 September 1913, to Moses "Edmund" Moorhead, Jr., the son of Moses Edmund Moorhead, Sr. and Nancy Jane Barnes. Moses was born 16 August 1882 on a farm east of Blue Grass, Scott County, Iowa and died 18 July 1973 (Powell 2001).
A 1919-1920 directory for Muscantine County list M.E. Moorehead, his wife Bessie and children Donald and Gordon on Route 1 in Fairport. Moses was a farmer and owned 120 acres (Atkinson 1919). The 1920 census places the family in Fulton Township, Muscatine County. The owned their farm. The couple lived with their two children, Donald and Gordon, neither of whom was old enough to attend school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 113, Fulton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 5B, 20 January 1920). In 1930, the couple lived with their five children on a farm in Fulton Township, Muscatine County. They owned the farm and a radio. Three children were born between the 1920 and 1930 census. They were Beverly, Bernard and Calvin (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 70-5, Fulton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 5A, 19 April 1930). Edmunds's final residence (1973) was Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa (Social Security Death Index). Bessie and Edmund are buried in Memorial Park in Bloomington Township, Muscatine County, Iowa (Muscatine County IAGenWeb).
3165. (i.) DONALD WAYNE "Don" MOORHEAD7, was born 19 April 1915 in Muscatine County, Iowa and died 29 July 1990 (Powell 2001; Social Security Death Index). Donald is listed in a 1919 directory for the county as a resident of his parents household. He also appears on the 1920 census as a child age four years and eight months, living on his parent's farm in Fulton Township, Muscatine County (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 113, Fulton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 5B, 20 January 1920). In 1930, Donald lived at home with his parents on their farm in Fulton Township and attended school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 70-5, Fulton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 5A, 19 April 1930). He and his first cousin, Edgar Raub Hetzel, both graduated from Muscantine High School, class of 1933. The year book gives his nickname as "Don" (Auroran 1933). Donald's social security number was issued in Louisanna before 1951 (Social Security Death Index). He married (First Name Unknown) Stuart (Powell 2001).
3166. (ii.) GORDON EDMUND "Gordy" MOORHEAD7, was born 18 November 1916 in Muscatine County, Iowa and died 16 September 1993 (Powell 2001; Social Security Death Index). Gordon Donald is listed in a 1919 directory for the county as a resident of his parents household. He also appears on the 1920 census as a child age three years and two months, living on his parent's farm in Fulton Township, Muscatine County (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 113, Fulton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 6A, 20 January 1920). In 1930, Gordon lived at home with his parents on their farm in Fulton Township and attended school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 70-5, Fulton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 5A, 19 April 1930). Gordon graduated from Muscantine High School, class of 1935. The year book gives his nickname as "Gordy" (Auroran 1935). He married (First Name Unknown) Martz (Powell 2001). Gordon's social security number was issued in California before 1951. His final residence was Durant, Cedar County, Iowa (Social Security Death Index).
