READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

JOSEPH M. MARTIN6

3121. JOSEPH S. MARTIN6 (Walter E. Martin5, Benjamin F. Martin4, Lydia Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 21 February 1887 in Wilton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa and died May 1976 (Muscatine County GenWeb; Social Security Death Index). His parents moved to Sweetland Township, Muscatine County in 1892, when he was about five years old (Richman 1911:585). Joseph appears on the 1900 census as age 13, living at home with his parents in Sweetland Township, Muscatine County and attending school with his sisters Mary and Laura and brother William. According to the census, he attended school six months out of the year. He was employed as a laborer on his father's farm the other six months of the year (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 110, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 7A, 18 June 1900).

Joseph married in 1909 or 1910, Lois R. Darling. She was born 12 June 1889 in Indiana and died July 1973 (Social Security Death Index). In 1910, the couple rented a farm near Joseph's parents. Joseph and Lois were in dwelling 147, Joseph's parent's—Walter and Addie Martin—as well as all four of Joseph's younger siblings were in dwelling 152. Joseph was employed as general farmer. The couple did not have children (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 117, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 8A, 2 May 1910). Six children were born to Joe and Lois between 1910 and 1911, four of whom were living when a directory of the county was published in 1919 (the couple's daughter Ruth, had died in 1917 (Muscatine County GenWeb)). The directory lists Joe Martin, wife Lois and children Olive, Ruby, Edwin and Mary on Route 3 in Muscatine Township. Joe was a farmer with 160 acres. The family had a telephone through the Independent telphone company and subscribed to the The Farm Journal (Wilmer Atkinson Company 1919; Wilmer Atkinson Company also published The Farm Journal).

In 1920, the Martins were still renting a farm in Sweetland Township. Joe and Mary had a tenant, 76 year old Christian Kaufman, who was born in Switzerland and came to the United States in 1852 as a young boy. He was naturalized in 1884. Kaufman was not employed at the time of the census. The children living in the Martin household were the same four children who had appeared in the 1919 directory (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 10B, 10 February 1920). The Martins had moved to Seventy-six Township in Muscatine County by the time the 1930 census was enumerated. Joe was a general farmer, but he was still renting his farm. Seven of the nine surviving Martin children still lived at home in 1930: Walter, Mary, Lucille, Harry Josephine, Vora Dale and Billy. The five younger children had all been born since the 1920 census. The family owned a radio which surely served, in part, as entertainment for the children. The two oldest girls, Olive and Ruby, had moved out ot the house by 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 70-26, Seventy-six Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 5B, 14 April 1930).

Joe and Lois's final residence (1976 and 1973 respectively) was Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa (Social Security Death Index). Cedar County is adjacent to Muscatine County. Joe and Lois are buried with their daughter Ruth in Harker Cemetery, Muscatine County, Iowa (Muscatine County, Iowa, GenWeb).

Joseph S. Martin and Lois Darling had 10 children born betweeen circa 1909 and 1929. I have identified 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and 7 second great-grandchildren. Total identified descendants equals 30.
