BENJAMIN CLIFFORD "Ben" MARTIN6

3124. BENJAMIN CLIFFORD "Ben" MARTIN6 (Walter E. Martin5, Benjamin F. Martin4, Lydia Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 26 July 1892 in either Wilton or Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa and died 9 June 1966 (Muscatine County GenWeb; Social Security Death Index). His parents moved to Sweetland Township, Muscatine County in 1892, but it is not known whether it was before or after Benjamin was born (Richman 1911:585). He appears on the 1900 census as age 8, living at home with her parents in Sweetland Township, Muscatine County. He also lived with his parents in 1910 on their farm in Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 110, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheets 7A-B, 18 June 1900; 1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 117, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 8A, 2 May 1910). Benjamin married in Sweetland on July 22, 1914, Amanda B. Pace, daughter of Elvin Y. Pace and Ida M. Henneker. Amanda was born June 13, 1894, at Sweetland, Iowa and died 28 August 1990 at Lutheran Homes in Muscatine County, Iowa (Muscatine Journal, 28 August 1990). One of Amanda's uncles was Elbridge Pace. His first wife was (3081) Anna M. Raub5 (Iowa Marriages). Anna was an adopted daughter of Sarah Martin Keen Raub, a great-aunt of Ben Martin. By the time Amanda was born, Anna Raub Pace had been dead for at least a dozen years and Elbridge Pace was married to his second wife, Kate Shellabarger (Iowa Marriages).

A 1919-1920 directory lists B.C. Martin, wife Amanda and children Helen and Alice on Route 1 in Wilton. Benjamin was a farmer with 80 acres. The family had a telephone through the Independent telphone company (Wilmer Atkinson Company 1919). The 1920 census notes that the family was renting the farm. By 1930, the family owned a farm in Wilton Township, whether it was the same farm as the 1920 farm is not known. The family also owned a radio. Amanda's widowed mother, Ida Pace, lived with the Martins in 1930. Both the Martin children, Helen and Alice, were in school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Wilton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 6A, 19 January 1920; 1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 70-28, Wilton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 5B, 24 April 1930). Ben died in June 1966. His final residence was the city of Muscatine (Muscatine County GenWeb; Social Security Death Index). Amanda lived until 1990. Her obituary stated that:

Survivors include one daughter, Helen Neipert, of West Liberty; nine grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1966, one daughter and one grandchild. She was a 50-year member of the Sweetland United Methodist Church and a member of the Progressive Club of Wilton. She spent most of her life farming with her husband in the Sweetland area (Muscatine Journal, 28 August 1990).

Amanda's funeral service was held Thursday, 30 August 1990 at the George M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, the Rev. Andrea Bishop of the Sweetland United Methodist Church officiated (ibid.). Amanda and Ben Martin are buried in Harker Cemetry (Muscatine County, Iowa, GenWeb).
