ELIZABETH ANN OSMUN SWAYZE4

322. ELIZABETH ANN OSMUN4 (Sarah Ann Read3, David Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 21 October 1841 in New Jersey, probably in Hope Township, Warren County and died 27 December 1904 (St. John's Cemetery). Elizabeth first appears on the census in 1850. She lived with her parents and two younger siblings—Mary and Lemuel. Elizabeth was listed as age 8 on the census, her ninth birthday was in October of the census year, after the cut off date for the census year (1850 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 440, 13 September 1850). In 1860, Elizabeth lived with her parents and six sisters and brothers on the family farm in Hope Township. Her siblings included her younger sisters Mary Adeline and Sarah Ellen, and her four younger brothers: Lemuel, Joseph, Alvah and Charles (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 2). Elizabeth's father died in 1867, when she was 25and a half years old. She married in late 1868 or early 1869, Isaac S. Swayze, the son of Asa Swayze and Margaret Swisher.

Isaac Swayze was born 1 December 1832 in Warren County, New Jersey and died 18 December 1908 (St. Johns Cemetery). In 1870, Isaac and Elizabeth lived on a farm in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. They owned their farm, which was valued at $8,400. They also owned a personal estate valued at $1,687. Isaac had a live-in farm hand named Nelson Ming. He was 27 years old and was born in Pennsylvania. The Swayze's farm was fairly close to Elizabeth's mother's farm. Sally Osmun lived with her four youngest surviving children in dwelling 135. Elizabeth and Isaac lived in dwelling 144 (1870 United Staes Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 178, post office Belvidere, 5 August 1870).

By 1880, Elizabeth and Isaac had two children. Their oldest child, Iriving "Clinton" Swayze was born in 1882. He was joined a year later by his sister Mabelle, who was also known as "Belle." When the 1880 census was taken both Clinton and Belle were in school. The Swayzes lived in Hope Township. Issac was listed as a "farmer" and Elizabeth was "keeping house" (1880 United Staes Federal Census, Enumeration District 199, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 422B, 17 June 1880).

Isaac and Elizabeth still lived in Hope Township in 1900. Both of their children still lived at home. Clinton was 28 and their daughter Belle was 27. Isaac's occupation was given as "retired," there was no occupation listed for either Elizabeth or Clinton, Belle's occupation was given as "house work." By 1900, Isaac was 67 years old and Elizabeth was 58. According to the census they had been married 31 years and were the parents of 2 chldren, both of whom were living (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 189, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 11, 25 June 1900).

Elizabeth died two days after Christmas of 1904. Isaac lived almost another 4 years. He died on 18 December 1908. They are buried in St. Johns of Hope Methodist Church Cemetery (also known as "Old Moravian"), in Hope, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their grave stones were field checked 24 March 2004.

CHILDREN OF ELIZABETH ANN OSMUN and ISAAC S. SWAYZE:

3620. (i.) IRVING "CLINTON" SWAYZE 5, was born September 1871 in New Jersey and died 1950. Clinton first appears on the Federal census in 1880, as an eight year old school boy. He lived with his parents and his sister in Hope Township. The census gave his name as "Irving" (1880 United Staes Federal Census, Enumeration District 199, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 422B, 17 June 1880). Clinton married circa 1896 or 1897, Rebecca Smith, the daughter of Rachel A. Smith. Rebecca was born circa 1866 and died in 1944. Although Clinton was married to Rebecca in 1900, he was still listed as a resident of his parent's household. No occupation was listed for him in the 1900 census. Neither Rebecca nor the couple's three year old daughter Helen appear in the census. His name is given as "Irving" in the census (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 189, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 11, 25 June 1900). In 1910, Clinton and Rebecca lived on a farm in Hope Township with their daughter Helen and Rebecca's widowed mother Rachel A. Smith. Clinton was employed as a farmer. The Swayzes owned their farm free and clear of all mortgages. According to the census, Clinton and Rebecca had been married 13 years and were the parents of one child. This is the first time Clinton's names is given as "Clinton" and not as "Irving" in the census (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13B, 6 May 1910). By 1930, Clinton and Rebecca had moved to the village of Delaware in Knowlton Township, Warren County. Rebecca's 87 year old mother, Rachel Smith still lived with the family. In addition, 14 year old Ramon J. Hartung also lived with the family. Ramon was the son of Helen Swayze, hence the grandson of Clinton and Rebecca Swayze and Great-grandson of Rachel Smith. Clinton Swayze had given up farming. He was the manager of a feed store. Ramon Hartung worked in a local grocery store while attending school. Clinton and Rebecca Swayze owned their home, which was valued at $4,000. They also owned a radio. Clinton's name has returned to "Clinton" in this census (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-13, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 4 April 1930). Child of Clinton Swayze and Rebecca Smith:

3627. (i.) HELEN MABELLE SWAYZE6, was born 2 August 1897 and died 3 February 1986. In about 1914, Helen married her fourth cousin Charles Gwinnup Hartung6 (Hulda Smith5, Elizabeth Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1). Charles was the son of George E. Hartung and Hulda Smith. He was born 31 January 1895 in New Jersey, probably in Knowlton Township and died 25 August 1988. Charles lived in Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pennsylvania when he died (Ramseyburg Cemetery; Social Security Death Index). The couple had four children between 1915 and 1930. They divorced between 1930 and 1937. Charles married his second wife, Charlotte Quig, on 20 February 1937 (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughbourough 2001; Social Security Death Index). Charles and Charlotte are buried in Ramseyburg Cemetery, Ramseyburg, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their graves were visited on 15 April 2005.

3621. (ii.) MABELLE "Belle" SWAYZE 5, was born March 1873 in New Jersey and died unknown. Belle first appears on the Fedreal census in 1880, as a seven year old school girl. She lived with her parents and her brother in Hope Township. The census gave her name as "Mabelle" (1880 United Staes Federal Census, Enumeration District 199, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 422B, 17 June 1880). By 1900, Belle was keeping house for her parents. Isaac and Elizabeth Swayze lived in Hope Township. Isaac was 67 and Elizabeth was 58. It is possible that Elizabeth was ill by 1900. She died four years later in 1904 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 189, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 11, 25 June 1900).
