HARRIET FLUMERFELT TREAT4

328. HARRIET FLUMERFELT4 (Eleanor Flumerfelt, nee Read3; David Read2; Joseph Read1) was born 12 August 1850 in Hope Township, New Jersey, died circa 1918. In 1860, Harriet lived with her parents on their farm in Hope Township. She and her brother John attended school (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 8, 28 June 1860). Harriet married, on 6 March 1869, Sylvester Treat, in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. He was born in 1848 and died 2 September 1907 (Miller n.d.). In 1860, Sylvester lived with his widowed mother, Sarah J. Treat (age 30), on the family's farm in Hope Township. The census indicated that the Treats were farm tenants. Sarah Treat owned a personal estate valued at $800. There were six children in the family: Elizabeth (age 14), Sylvester (age 13), Aruia (age 10), Caleb (age 7), Lucus (age 5), Asa (age 3) and Harriet (age 1). John and Soren Albertson also lived in the household. John was 15 and Soren was 10 months old. John Albertson and Slyvester, Aruia, Caleb and Lucus Treat all attended school. A 58 year old woman named Elsy Unocle also lived in the household. She owned real estate valued at 7,500 and a personal estate valued at $160. Elsy may have owned the farm that the Treats were tenants on. All members of the household werer born in New Jersey (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 15, 30 June 1860).

Harriet and Sylvester Treat lived close to Harriet's parents in 1870. The Treats were located in dwelling 205, while Charles and Eleanor Flumerfelt were in dwelling 199. The Treats had recently married and did not yet have children of their own. Sylvester's brother William L. Treat (age 16) lived with the couple and worked as a farm laborer (he is probably the Lucus Treat of the 1850 census, see above under seperate listing for Harriet). Sylvester owned real estate valued at $8,750 and had a personal estate valued at $2,100. The Treat household in 1870 was comprised of the following members:

Harriet and Sylvester lived in Hope Township in 1880. They are listed in the census between Harriet's second cousin Ira C. Read4 (Martin F. Read3, Samuel Read2, Joseph Read1) and her uncle Joseph M. Read3 (David Read2, Joseph Read1). Sylvester Treat was a farmer. Harriet's occupation is given as "keeping house." The Treat household in 1880 consisted of Sylvester and Harriet, two of their sons, and a hired boy named Walter Gross (table 2). Neither of the Treat children attended school in 1880. Both of them were too young to start school that year (the census year ran from 1 June 1879 to 31 May 1880).

Sylvester Treat was a founding member of the Mount Hermon Cornet Band in Hope Township. The band was organized in December 1875. Sylvester served as it's first president. The band was led by Harriet's second cousin, Samuel Read4 (Aaron Read, II3, Samuel Read2, Joseph Read1) (Snell 1881:667). Harriet and Sylvester moved to East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey after 1881. Sylvester died there in September 1907. Harriet appears on the 1910 census as a resident of the household of her son Raymond Treat. Raymond lived in Old Bridge in East Brunswick Township. Raymond was in dwelling number 20. Harriet's son Frank Treat was in dwelling 17. According to the census, Harriet was living on her own income (1910 United States Census, Enumeration District 4, East Brunswick Township, District 2, Middlesex County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 16 April 1910). Harriet died in about 1918. She and and Sylvester are buried in Old Bridge Cemetery, Old Bridge, East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey (LDS Disc #2).

CHILDREN OF HARRIET FLUMERFELT AND SYLVESTER JAY TREAT:

916. (i.) FRANK LEIGH TREAT5, was born 22 October 1873 in Hope, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1946 (LDS Batch number C006084 and Disc #2; Miller n.d.). He married Ella "Adele" Gordon, the daughter of Van L. and Cornelia Gordon. Adele was born 1875, in New Jersey and died 1959 LDS Disc #2; Miller n.d.). Her younger sister Bertha married Frank's younger brother Raymond. In 1880, Adele lived with her parents, her older brother Willis (who was 9) and her 3month old sister Bertha on the family farm in East Burnswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Adele and Willis were both in school (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 138, East Burnswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, page East Burnswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, 390A, 9 June 1880). In 1910, Frankand Adele and their two sons—Willis and Clinton—lived in the village of Old Bridge, New Jersey. Frank was employed as a laborer in the local glass works. The family rented their home. Frank lived in dwelling 17, his brother Raymond lived in dwelling 20. Frank's widowed mother, Harriet Flumerfelt Treat, lived with Raymond and his family (1910 United States Census, Enumeration District 4, East Brunswick Township, District 2, Middlesex County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 16 April 1910). The family was still in Old Bridge in 1920. Frank and Adele lived with their son Willis. Their son Clinton was 13 years old, but was not a resident of the household. His whereabouts are currently unknown. Both Frank and Willis worked as laboreres in local factories. The family was still renting a home in 1920 (1920 United States Census, Enumeration District 3, East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, sheet 12A). Willis Treat married in 1924. He and his bride, Bertha Dill, lived with his parents in 1930. The couple's 4 year old daughter was also a resident of Frank and Adele's household. Frank worked as a machine operator in a cement block factory. Willis and Bertha were both employed in local factories. Adele appears to have kept household and been the child care provider for her granddaughter Catherine. In 1930, Frank and Raymond Treat are listed adjacent to one another on the census (1930 United States Census, Enumeration District 12-146, East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, sheet 2B, 3 April 1910). They are buried in Old Bridge Cemetery, Old Bridge, East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey (LDS Disc #2; Miller n.d.). Children of Frank Treat and Ella Adele Gordon:

1327. (i.) WILLIS GORDON TREAT6, was born 15 September 1902 in New Jersey and died July 1984 in Colt's Neck, Colt's Neck Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey. The Social Security Death Index gives his residence at the time of his death as Morganville, Monmouth County, New Jersey (LDS Disc #2; Miller n.d.; Social Security Death Index). Willis was probably named after his mother's older brother, Willis Gordon. Willis Treat was single on the 1910 and 1920 census. In both census reports he was a resident of his parent's home in Old Bridge, East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Willis was in school in 1910. In 1920, he was employed as a laborer in a local factory (1910 United States Census, Enumeration District 4, East Brunswick Township, District 2, Middlesex County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 16 April 1910; 1920 United States Census, Enumeration District 3, East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, sheet 12A). Willis married on 30 November 1924, Bertha Grace Dill, in New Jersey. She was born 23 March 1907 in New Jersey and died 16 September 1985, in South River, South River Boro, Middlesex County, New Jersey (LDS Disc #2; Miller n.d.; Social Security Death Index). In 1930, the couple lived with Willis's parents in Old Bridge. They had one child at the time, their daughter Catherine. Both Willis and Bertha were employed in local factories. Willis was a foreman in a tile factory. and Bertha was a folder in a factory (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 12-146, East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, sheet 2B, 3 April 1930). Willis died in 1984. His death benefits were paid to an address in Morganville, Monmouth County, New Jersey. Willis and Bertha are buried in Washington Memorial Cemetery, South River, New Jersey. Children of Willis Treat and Bertha Dill:

2909. (i.) CATHERINE ADELE TREAT7, was born circa 1926 in New Jersey. In 1930, she lived with her parents and her Treat grandparents in Old Bridge, New Jersey (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 12-146, East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, sheet 2B, 3 April 1930; Miller n.d.).

2910. (ii.) JANE CAROLYN TREAT7, married Earle Lloyd Eastman (Miller n.d.). Children of Jane Treat and Earle Eastman:

2911. (i.) CAROLE LYNN EASTMAN8, married James Brady (Miller n.d.).

2912. (ii.) KEITH GORDON EASTMAN8, married Rosanne Romano (Miller n.d.).

2913. (iii.) CATHERINE ANN EASTMAN8, married Michael Allen Kennedy (Miller n.d.). They reside in West Richland, Washington. Children of Catherine Eastman and Michael Kennedy.

2914. (i.) CATHERINE ANN KENNEDY9, (Miller n.d.).

2915. (ii.) WILLIAM MICHAEL KENNEDY9, (Miller n.d.).

1328. (ii.) CLINTON R. TREAT6, was born 1907 in New Jersey; died 1959. He is buried in Old Bridge Cemetery, Old Bridge, East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey (LDS Disc #2; Miller n.d.).

917. (ii.) DEWITT CLINTON TREAT5, was born 1880 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1949 (LDS Disc #2; Miller n.d.). DeWitt was married three times (Miller n.d.) According to the 1930 census, he was first married at the age of 29, or about 1909. He appears on the 1910 census as a widower (1910 United States Census, Enumeration District 4, East Brunswick Township, District 2, Middlesex County, New Jersey, sheet 3B, 20 April 1910; 1930 United States Census, Enumeration District 56-22, Kingston City, 7th ward, Ulster County, New York, sheet 7A). In 1910, DeWitt was employed as a bartender in a hotel in Old Bridge, New Jersey. He also lived in the hotel which was run by Pearson H. and Marie Bennet. At the time of the census, John and Mary C. Tally and Raymond Bardby were residents of the hotel. Both John Tally and Bardby were employed in the local galss works. Tally was a superintendent and Bardby was a cooper. Carrie Plaskonkor a recent immigrant from Polish Austria, was employed in the hotel kitchen. DeWitt probably married his second wife in about 1914. She was Mary (Last Name Unknown), born circa 1895 in New Jersey, the daughter of German immigrants. They were still married in 1930 and lived in Kingston, New York. DeWitt was employed as a radio salesman. Ironically, the family did not own a radio in 1930. DeWitt and Mary Treat lived in a rented home with their four children. All of the children were born in New Jersey between circa 1914 and 1921. The censu gives DeWitt place of birth as New Jersey, and then states that both of his parents were born in Germany (1930 United States Census, Enumeration District 56-22, Kingston City, 7th ward, Ulster County, New York, sheet 7A). This statement is in error, both of his parents were born in Warren County. He is buried in Old Bridge Cemetery, Old Bridge, East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey (LDS Disc #2; Miller n.d.). Children of DeWitt and Mary Treat:

2903. (i.) EVELYN TREAT6, was born circa 1914 in New Jersey and died unknown. She lived at home with her parents in 1930 and attended school (1930 United States Census, Enumeration District 56-22, Kingston City, 7th ward, Ulster County, New York, sheet 7A).

2904. (ii.) DOROTHY TREAT6, was born circa 1915 in New Jersey and died unknown. She lived at home with her parents in 1930 and attended school (1930 United States Census, Enumeration District 56-22, Kingston City, 7th ward, Ulster County, New York, sheet 7A).

2905. (iii.) GERTRUDE TREAT6, was born circa 1920 in New Jersey and died unknown. She lived at home with her parents in 1930 and attended school (1930 United States Census, Enumeration District 56-22, Kingston City, 7th ward, Ulster County, New York, sheet 7A).

2906. (iv.) ROBERT TREAT6, was born circa 1921 in New Jersey and died unknown. He lived at home with his parents in 1930 and attended school (1930 United States Census, Enumeration District 56-22, Kingston City, 7th ward, Ulster County, New York, sheet 7A).

918. (iii.) HARRY "RAYMOND" TREAT5, was born 1885 in New Jersey; died 1955. He married circa 1907, Bertha E. Gordon, the daughter of Van L. and Cornelia Gordon. She was born in either March or April of 1880 in New Jersey and died unknown. In 1880, Bertha, who was three months old, lived with her parents and her older siblings Willis (age 9) and Adele (age 5) on the family farm in East Burnswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 138, East Burnswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, page East Burnswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, 390A, 9 June 1880). In 1910, Raymond and Bertha lived with their daughter Majorie and Raymond's mother Harriet Flumerfelt Treat in the village of Old Bridge, New Jersey. Raymond was an unemployed bartender. He had worked for one of the local hotels. Neither Bertha Treat, nor Harriet Treat was employed. Harriet Treat lived on her own income. The Treats lived in a rented house in Old Bridge. Their house was dwelling 20. Raymond's brother Frank lived in dwelling 17 (1910 United States Census, Enumeration District 4, East Brunswick Township, District 2, Middlesex County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 16 April 1910). I have not been able to find Raymond in the 1920 census. However, in 1930, he and Bertha were listed as living adjacent to his brother Frank in Old Bridge. Their daughter Majoried was not a member of the household, but their son Donald was. Bertha's 82 year old widowed mother, Cornelia S. Gordon, lived with them. Faymond was employed as a truck driver for a cement block factory, perhaps the same factory where his brother Frank worked as a machinist (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 12-146, East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, sheet 2B, 3 April 1930; Miller n.d.). Harry is buried in Old Bridge Cemetery, Old Bridge, East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey (LDS Disc #2; Miller n.d.). Children of Raymond Treat and Bertha Gordon:

2907. (i.) MARJORIE E. TREAT6, was born circa 1908 in New Jersey and died unknown (1910 United States Census, Enumeration District 4, East Brunswick Township, District 2, Middlesex County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 16 April 1910).

2908. (ii.) DONALD J. TREAT6, was born 31 August 1912 in New Jersey and died 25 December 1997 (Social Security Death Index). In 1930, Donald lived at home with her parents and attended school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 12-146, East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, sheet 2B, 3 April 1930). In 1995, at the time of his death, he resided in East Brunswick Township (Social Security Death Index).
