BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Samuel Vaughn was born was born 30 December 1795, in Knowlton Township, Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey (Kern 1938). He was the eldest of the seven children of the Rev. Daniel Vaughn and Hannah Read (widow of Benjamin Ogden). His parents marriage was a second marriage for both parties. Samuel had fifteen older half siblings from the first marriages of both his parents. It is probable that at least ten of these siblings were living in the house at the time of his birth. When he was born his older Vaughn half-siblings were Elizabeth France (born 1767), Jacob Vaughn (born 1769), Rachel Kimble (born 1772), and Richard (born 1774), Daniel (born 1777), Lydia (born 1778), Sarah (born 1780), Rhoda (born 1783), Dinah (born 1785), and John Vaughn (born 1792). Another brother, David Vaughn, was born in 1790 and died young, it is not known if he was still living in 1795. Samuel's Ogden half-siblings were Amos Ogden (born 1785), Mary Ogden (born 1789), Joseph Read Ogden (born 1790) and Sarah Ogden (born 1792).

Samuel's father was the pastor of the Knowlton Baptist church from 1785 until 1800, when the church ceased to exist (Griffith 1904:90-91). The family continued to live in Knowlton Township after the church was dissolved. The Rev. Daniel Vaughn died in 1810, when Samuel was 14 years old. His father's will named his seven children by Hannah and his ten surviving children by his first wife Dinah Waktins. The total value of the estate to $1,135.13. Daniel's will provided his "well beloved wife Hannah" with one-third of the household goods and chattels (Sussex County Surrogate Court Records, hereinafter SCSCR, File 1255). Hannah's share of the estate was $378.38. The remaining $756.75 was split by his seventeen surviving children. This left each child approximately $44.51.

Because Daniel's estate left so little to each of his children, most of them left the Warren/Sussex County area. Several of Samuel's older Vaughn half-siblings left for New York before 1800. Samuel remained in New Jersey for awhile after reaching the age of 21. He married in Sussex County, Anna Raub, the daughter of Michael Raub and Anna Kuhl. Anna was born 12 February 1797 and was baptized 19 March 1797 in the First German and English Congregation of Knowlton, Knowlton Township, Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey. Her older brother Michael Raub, married Samuel's first cousin (20) Mary Read3, the daughter of Samuel's uncle (3) Isaac Read2, Sr. The couple farmed in Knowlton Township for a few years after their marriage. Their son Michael was born there in 1814. He was followed by daughter Hannah in 1816. The Vaughns moved to New York between 1816, when their daughter Hannah was born in Sussex County and 1818, when their son William was born in the Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York. A Biographical Records of Schuyler County New York (Clarke 1903) gives the date of Samuel's arrival in Hector as 1822. However, this date is clearly in error as the 1820 Federal census lists the family as residents of the Town of Hector. The family consisted of two adults and 4 children under the age of 10. According to the census, two individuals in the household were engaged in agriculture. In 1820, Samuel lived near several members of his family. These included his mother Hannah Read Ogden Vaughn, his half-brother John Vaughn, his half sister Rachel Vaughn Kimble and Rachel's son David Kimble (1820 United States Federal Census, Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York, page 5).

When the 1840 census arrived, Samuel and Anna were grandparents. Their three eldest children had left the house and started families of their own. Their son Michael and his wife Eliza Thompson had their daughter Mary in April 1840. Their daughter Hannah and her husband Frederick Strader had two children by the end of 1840: Alvira and Samuel. Their son William may have been married to Caroline Strader by 1840, but they did not have children. These three children settled in the town of Big Flats in Chemung County. Samuel is supposed to have owned 300 acres in the town of Hector and 200 acres in Big Flats (Clarke 1903). It is possible that his sons were farming his Big Flats land. While Samuel and Anna's older chldren were marrying and starting their own families, Anna was still having babies. Rhoda arrived the year of the 1830 census, and then three more children were born in 1833 (Lydia), 1835 (Azubah) and 1837 (Catherine). Catherine was the youngest of the 12 Vaughn children. The members of Samuel and Anna's household in 1840 were as follows:

In 1850, the Samuel and Anna were listed in the census as residents of the Town of Hector. Samuel was listed as a farmer. He possessed real estate valued at $4000. The Vaughns were household 422. They were surrounded by Samuel's extended family. His half-sister Sarah Ogden Snyder lived in dwelling 421. His younger sister Amanda Vaughn Thompson lived in dwelling 420. His half-sister Rhoda Vaughn Brown lived in dwelling 414. His brother William Vaughn lived in dwelling 410. Two of Samuel's nephews also lived near by: Henry Kimble (son Samuel's late half-sister Rachel Vaughn Kimble) was in dwelling 416 and Benjamin O. Snyder (son of Samuel's half-sister Sarah Ogden Snyder) lived in dwelling 419. Samuel and Anna's immediate family in 1850 included two of their sons—Daniel and Amos—and six of their daughters—Sally Ann, Rachel, Rhoda, Lydia, Azubah and Catherine. In addition to their eight children, Samuel and Anna's household also included a 20 year old laborer names Ira Matthews. He was a native of New York (1850 United States Federal Census, Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York, pages 387-388, 30 July 1850). Table 5 presents the members of the household in 1850.

Samuel and Anna's son Johnson married Elizabeth Palmer early in 1850. He was not listed on the census as a member of their household. Their daughter Azubah died shortly after the census was taken and was buried in Burdett Presbyterian Church Yard (Kern 1938). Samuel and Anna were members of the Presbyterian Church and Samuel served as an Elder until his death in 1864 (Clarke 1903). The 1850s was a decade of change for Samuel and Anna. Although their children had started to marry and move out of the county in the late 1830s (Michael, Hannah and William). Johnson was the only child to marry before the 1850 census was enumerated. While Daniel and Sally Ann were of an age to marry, neither of them ever did. However, between 1850 and 1860 four of the couple's chlidren married. Amos married Catherine Palmer, Rachel married James Allen, Rhoda married Joseph Chandler and Lydia married Allen Becker. Their daughter Catherine married Hiram Elliott in 1862, but she was not a resident of the household in 1860. Nor was their son Daniel. The only chlid still living at home in 1860 was Sally Ann, who shaved ten years off her age on the census (see table 6).

In 1860, Samuel owned real estate valued at $1,600. He also had a personal estate which was valued at $2,000. The census gave his occupation as farmer. Samuel had held real estate valued at $4000 in 1850. He was probably partitioning the land among his five sons none of whom lived at home in 1860. Because Samuel was a major landowner in the area (he once held 500 acres in Schuyler and Chemung Counties), he was active in civil affairs. In 1851, he served as one of the executors of the estate of Archibald Thompson of the Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York. Thompson died on 16 December 1851. Samuel was co-executor with Ephriam Morris and James Reeve. In 1854, Schuyler County was created from a part of Tompkins County. The Town of Hector became part of the new county. Samuel served on the first Grand Jury of the newly created county (Schuyler County, New York GenWeb). A Biographical Records of Schuyler County New York states that "He was also quite prominent in local affairs and filled a number of local offices with credit to himself and satifaction to his constituents" (Clarke 1903:235).

Samuel's death was reported in the Havana Republican, date of death was given as 2 April 1864 and age of 68 years. In 1870, Anna lived on the family farm in the Town of Hector, Schuyler County, New York. Her daughter Sally Ann (age 48) lived with her. Sally was unmarried in 1870 (table 7). Anna owned real estate valued at $2,000. Her personal estate was valued at $3,000. According to the census, Anna could not write, but she could read (1870 United States Federal Census, Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York, pages 515, June 1870). Anna was born in 1797 and was taught to read at a time when reading and writing were taught as two different subjects. Many individuals learned to read, but not to write in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
