The couple moved to Greene Township after the birth of their son George in the fall of 1916. Kathryn and Charles bought a dairy farm on West Hill Road, and were living there in 1920 and 1930 when the census was enumerated. By 1930 the family had a radio in the house. (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 115, Green Township, Chenago County, New York, sheet 2B; 1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 9-10, Greene Township, Chenago County, New York, sheets 3B and 4A; Howell and Phethean 2000; Kern 1938; Windemuth Family Organization 1996:(I)32). Children of Katherine Cook and Charles Hartman:
1560. (i.) HAZEL EMMA HARTMAN7, was born circa 1915 in Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown. The 1920 census gives her age as 4 years, 9 months. This would place her birth in about March of 1915. Her family moved to Greene Township in Chenago County, New York after the birth of her brother in the fall of 1916 but before January 1920 when the census was enumerated. In January 1920, Hazel was too young to attend school. By 1930, she and her brother George were attending school in Green Townsihp (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 115, Green Township, Chenago County, New York, sheet 2B; 1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 9-10, Greene Township, Chenago County, New York, sheets 3B and 4A; Windemuth Family Organization 1996:(I)32).
2460. (ii.) GEORGE HERBERT HARTMAN7, was born circa 1916 in Warern County, New Jersey and died unknown. The 1920 census gives his age as 3 years and 2 months which would place his birth around October of 1916. George's family left Warren County after his birth and moved to Greene Township in Chenago County, New York. The family was living there in January 1920 when the census was enumerated. In January 1920, George was too young to attend school, but by the next census in 1930, he and Hazel were attending school together (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 115, Green Township, Chenago County, New York, sheet 2B; 1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 9-10, Greene Township, Chenago County, New York, sheets 3B and 4A; Windemuth Family Organization 1996:(I)32).
1334. (ii.) HERBERT TINSMAN COOK6, was born 23 September 1889 in Jope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Manary 2001) and died unknown. He married first by 1915, Unknown. In 1920, Herbert lived with his parents and his daughter by first wife on his James and Mary's farm in Hope Township. Herbert worked as a carpenter in a shipyard. The census indicates that he was married, but his wife was not a resident of the household (1920 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 159, sheet 4A, 13 & 14 January 1920). Herbert remarried after 1920 and had three children by his second wife. Child of Herbert Cook by his first wife:
2099. (i.) ANNA M. COOK7, was born circa 1915 in New Jersey and died unknown. In 1920, she lived with her father and paternal grandparents on the Cook farm in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. She had not yet started to attend school (Manary 2001 (does not include child's name or birth date); 1920 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 159, sheet 4A, 13 & 14 January 1920).

2463. (iv.) CHILD Cook7, was born after 1920 (Manary 2001).
706. (iii.) DAVID BRANDS COOK5, was born 18 October 1866, possibly in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 20 April 1867 probably in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. He was probably named after his mother's grandfather, David Brands. He is buried in the Mt Hermon Methodist Church Yard (also known as Green's Chapel), Mt Hermon, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Kern 1938; Windemuth Family Organization 1996:(I)32).
Sarah Maria Read was the first daughter and first of the four children of Aaron Read and Hannah Brands. She was born 20 April 1833 in Knowlton (now Hope) Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Kern 1938). She may have been named after both of her grandmothers: Sarah Angle Brands and Maria Freese Read. There is also a possiblity that she was named after her father's younger sister, Sarah Maria Read Durling.
Sarah is named as Aaron's daughter in his will, which was written on 7 November 1887, six years after her death. Aaron bequeathed a share of his estate to Sarah's two children (Warren County Surrogate Court Records, Wills Book 10, page 391). She appears as a resident of Aaron's household on the 1840 census as a female between the ages of 5 and 10 years of age (1840 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 5). She was still a resident of their household in 1850. She attended the local schools in Hope Township. The 1850 census indicates that at the age of 16 she was still in school (1850 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 437B).
The following year, Sarah married Andrew Teel Cook. Andrew was the son of Ira Cook and Elizabeth Teel of Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County. He appears to have been named after his maternal grandfather, Andrew Teel. Andrew Teel Cook was born 11 June 1828 in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Windemuth Family Organization 1996:(I)32). Andrew and Sarah's wedding took place on 20 September 1851. The ceremony was performed in Hope, by the Rev. R. Van Horn (Warren Journal, 16 October 1851). The Rev. Van Horn was the pastor of Zion Methodist Episcopal Church in Wolftown, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. At the time of the wedding the congregation had just agreed to build a church. They had been meeting in the local school house since about 1836. However, it is unlikely that the wedding took place in the new church as it was not dedicated until 1852 (Snell 1881:634).
Before they were married, Andrew and Sarah shared a kin connection. Andrew's second cousin was Catherine Read Kinney, daughter of Sarah's great uncle Aaron Read, I2 and Margaret Ann Cook. Catherine Read was Sarah's first cousin once removed. Andrew's second cousin was Catherine Read Kinney, daughter of Aaron Read, I2 and Margaret Ann Cook. Catherine Read was also Sarah's cousin; her first cousin once removed. Andrew Cook and Catherine Read shared a common great-grandfather—Elisha Cook.
Sarah and Andrew initially settled on a farm in Frelinghuysen Township. The couple had three children: Alveretta Caroline, James Ira and David Brands. The family is suppose to have lived on the Frelinghuysen farm until 1866. However, in 1860 when the census was taken, Sarah and Andrew appear to have separated, at least temporarily. Sarah resided with her parents and two of her siblings in Hope Township. She had her 7 year old daughter Alveretta with her. Her five year old son James was not with her. Nor was Andrew a resident of the household. The census gives Sarah's name as Sarah Read, not Sarah Cook. Table 1 details the composition of the Read household in 1860. There were also two unrelated individuals living in Aaron Read's household in 1860. Aaron Cool was a live-in farm hand. J.H.C. Brown was boarding with the family, he was the pastor of Zion M.E. Church in 1860 and 1861 (Snell 1881:634).

A clue to the reason for the separation may be found in a short biography of Andrew Teel Cook which was originally written in 1900 by Jacob Perry Wintermute (Windemuth Family Organization 1996:(I)32). According to the biography, Andrew and Sarah had considered moving to Ohio. It is possible that Andrew and James were in Ohio in 1860 looking at possible locations for the family's new farm. Whatever the reason for the separation, by 1866 Andrew and Sarah had reunited. Their third child, David Brands Cook, was born on 18 October 1866. This baby lived only a short while. He died at the age of 6 months on 20 April 1867. He is presumably buried in Greens Chapel Church yard (now Mount Hermon United Methodist Church), in Mount Hermon, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (ibid.).
In 1866, the Cooks moved from their farm in Frelinghuysen to a farm in Hope Township. They now lived closer to Sarah's parents. According to Wintermute's biography of Andrew: "He didn't like farming, but was fond of literature and music and played the violin." Andrew and Sarah's son James was also musical and led a band in Belvidere (ibid.). Sarah's brother Samuel was the leader of the Mount Hermon Cornet Band, which he and several other musicians founded in December 1875. Andrew and Sarah's son James was also a founding member of the band. At the time of its founding, the cornet band was the only civic organization in Hope Township (Snell 1881:667).
The Cook's daughter, Alveretta Caroline Cook attended and was a graduate of Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. She would have attended the seminary in the late 1860s (Windemuth Family Organization 1996:(I)32). During the years that she attended Wyoming Seminary her mother's second cousin, (101) Ira K. Read4 (Richard Read3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1) owned a home around the corner from Wyoming Seminary on Hoyt Street (Luzerne County Land Records, Deeds Book 95, page 194). Ira's eldest daughter, Sarah Margaret Read5 was 6 months younger than her third cousin Alveretta Cook. It is possible that Alveretta and Sarah attended the school together, or that they at least saw each other on occassion while Alveretta attended the school.
By 1870, Alveretta (or Alfretta as she is named in the census) was back home in Hope Township with her parents and her brother James. Andrew and Sarah Cook owned land valued at $10,000 and had a personal estate valued at $1,775. The Cook household in 1870 was comprised of the following people:

Alveretta was married on 2 November 1878 to Robert Heir. Robert was a native of Newcastle-On-Tyne in England. He was born there on 2 November 1852. The young couple moved to St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minesota. Their daughter Bessie was born there on 30 September 1879. The Heirs moved about the country for many years. They lived in St. Paul; Evanston, Illinois; and Buffalo, New York. By May 1925, the family was back in Minnesota, living in Blue Earth in Blue Earth County. Robert died there in May 1925 and was buried in Mankato Cemetery in Blue Earth (Windemuth Family Organization 1996:(I)32).
By 1880, both of Andrew and Sarah's children had left the household. Sarah's parents were living with the couple at the time of the 1880 census. Aaron owned a home in Mount Hermon, hence it is not known if the Cooks were living on the Read farm or if the Reads were living on the Cook farm. However, the census indicates that Aaron and Hannah Read were boarders in the house. Andrew Cook was listed as the head of the household. Table 2 sumarizes the occupants of the Cook/Read household in 1880.

Sarah Maria Read Cook died the year after the census (1881) and was buried in Greens Chapel/Mount Hermon Methodist Church yard. The year after her death her son James Ira Cook was married on 21 October 1882 to Mary M. Tinsman. Mary was the daughter of Daniel Tinsman and had grownup in Mount Hermon. She was born in Hope Township on 18 May 1856. In the late 1870s, James Cook had gone to Muscatine County, Iowa and farmed. He had several relatives living in Muscatine. His mother's second cousins, (237) Sarah Martin Keen4, (242) Lidia Anna Martin Wintermute 4 and (772) Jonathan Oliver Martin4 had settled in Muscatine before the Civil War. By 1870, (43) Lydia Read Martin3 (his grandfather Read's first cousin and the mother of the Martin children) had also settled in Muscatine. He may have returned to Mount Hermon when his mother died in 1881. James and Mary (Tinsman) Cook lived on a farm near Mount Hermon. The 1887 Warren County History and Directory (Weaver and Kern 1887), lists James I. Cook as a farmer and resident of Hope Township. James and Mary are supposed to have moved into the town of Mount Hermon before James died. The 1920 census places them on the farm in Hope Township. If they moved into Mount Hermon it was after January of 1920 when the census was enumerated (1920 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 159, sheet 4A, 13 & 14 January 1920) but before James died in Mount Hermon on 21 November 1921 (Windemuth Family Organization 1996:(I)32).
After Sarah Maria's death in 1881, Andrew Cook left Mount Hermon and moved to Scranton, Lackawana County, Pennsylvania, where he supported himself as a cabinet maker. He does not appear in the 1887 directory so it is assumed that he was living in Scranton by that year. Sarah's father, Aaron Read was still living at the time of his daughter's death. In November 1887 he sat down and wrote his will (WCSCR Wills Book 10, page 391). In the will Aaron wrote:
At the time that the will was written, Alveretta Heir was no longer living in New Jersey. James Cook was a resident of Hope Township. He and his wife Mary had recently become parents for the first time, their daughter Katherine A. Cook (possibly named after James's aunt Kate Read Kirkhuff) was born 24 April 1886. She was joinned by a brother, Herbert Tinsman Cook in 1890 (Windemuth Family Organization 1996:(I)32). James and Mary were eventually joinned by James's father Andrew Cook, who had a stroke sometime between 1881 and 1899. He returned to Mount Hermon and lived his last years with James and his family. James's grandfather Aaron Read died in January 1898. Andrew Cook died a little over 15 months later on 4 May 1899. Both men were buried in Greens Chapel/Mount Hermon United Methodist Church yard.
James and Mary Cook stayed in the Mount Hermon area until James died on 21 November 1921. During at least the last year of his life, James's son Herbert Cook and his daughter Anna M. Cook lived with James and Mary. Anna was about five years old at the time. Hebert Cook was employed as a carpenter in a shipyard (1920 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 159, sheet 4A, 13 & 14 January 1920). James and Mary's daughter Katherine married Charles Hartman. The couple lived on the Cook farm for awhile and then moved to Greene, Chenago County, New York (Windemuth Family Organization 1996:(I)32). They were not residents of the farm in 1920 (1920 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 159, sheet 4A, 13 & 14 January 1920).
Mary Tinsman Cook left Mount Hermon after James Ira Cook's death in 1921. She moved into the old Buckley homested in Hope. She is supposed to have died in Hope. Mary's daughter Katherine Cook Hartman was still living in 1935, as were Alveretta Cook Heir and her daughter Bessie Heir Wardell. By 1935, Katherine Cook Hartman had two children: Hazel Emma and Geoge Herbert Hartman. The family was living in Greene, Chenago County, New York. Alveretta Cook Heir died sometime after 1935, probably in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her daughter Bessie Heir married Charles Wardell, who was born in Minnesota in 1874. (Windemuth Family Organization 1996:(I)32). The whereabouts of this line of the family after 1935 is currently unknown.
