GROVER "CLEVELAND" SMITH5
3387. GROVER "CLEVELAND" SMITH6 (Lemic C. Smith5, Elizabeth Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 9 October 1884 near Delaware, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS IGI) and died unknown. His family called him Cleveland. Cleveland was born shortly before the presidential election of 1884, in which Grover Cleveland was the Democratic candidate. It is obvious from his name, that Lemic Smith was a Democrat and had chosen to name his son after the man he hoped would win the election (what Mary Smith thought is up to conjecture, as she did not have the vote). Grover Cleveland was elected as the 22nd President of the United States (and later as the 24th). In 1900, Grover Cleveland Smith lived at home with his parents on their farm in Knowlton Township and attended school. According to the census he had attended school for six months during the 1900 school year (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7B, 28 June 1900). Cleveland married circa 1909, Elise I. (Last Name Unknown). She was born circa 1884 in Pennsylvania and died unknown. In 1910, Cleveland and Elise lived in a rented home at 64 West Adams Ave. in Pleasantville, New Jersey. They had recently moved there from Pennsylvania, as their four month old son Russell had been born in that state. Cleveland was employed as a house carpenter. According to the census, he had been out of work for 11 weeks in 1909 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 37, Ward 1, Borough of Pleasantville, Atlantic County, New Jersey, sheet 8A, 22 April 1910). Cleveland and Elise had two additional children between 1910 and 1920. Evelyn was born about 1912 in New Jersey and Earl was born May or June 1916 in Delaware. By January of 1920, the Smiths were back in Pleasantville City, New Jersey. They lived in a rented home at 207 Chestnut Street. Grover was still employed as a house carpenter. Russell and Evelyn were in school. Earl was not quite 4 years old and was still at home with Elise (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 55, Ward 2, Pleasantville City, Atlantic County, New Jersey, sheet 27A, 26 January 1920). By 1930, Grover, Elise and the three Smith children lived as 605 Pennsylvania Avenue in Somers Point, New Jersey. The family owned their home, it was valued at $4,500. They also owned a radio. Cleveland was still a house carpenter, Russell (who was 20) was also employed as a house carpenter. The two younger children, 18 year old Evelyn and 14 year old Earl were not employed. Earl was the only child who was still in school. Elise Smith was not employed (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 1-71, Ward 2, Somers Point City, Atlantic County, New Jersey, sheets 3B-4A, 8 April 1930).
Grover Cleveland and Elise I. Smith had 3 children. Total identified descendants equals 3.
