EARL CECIL SMITH6

3389. EARL CECIL SMITH6 (Lemic C. Smith5, Elizabeth Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 20 April 1897 near Delaware, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 20 June 1949 in Knowlton Township (LDS IGI; Loughborough 2001). In 1900, he was three years old and lived at home with his parents on their farm in Knowlton Township and attended school (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7B, 28 June 1900). Earl's mother had died in 1899 when he was two years old. His father died in 1909 about seven months before the 1910 census. When the census was enumerated, Earl lived with his sister Ida May Smith Alberston and her husband Stewart. Stewart Albertson was a general farmer in the Delaware area of Knowlton Township. The Albertson's son Charles (who was also Earl's nephew) was also a resident of the household. Charles was a year younger than Earl. Both the boys were in school during the 1909-1910 school year (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4B, 28 April 1910).

Earl married by 1918, Mary Clara Silverthorn, the daughter of Albert Silverthorn and Emma Caroline Hartung. Mary Clara's mother was a sister of Geroge E. Hartung. George Hartung was married to Earl's Aunt Hulda Smith. Earl and Mary Clara shared George and Hulda (Smith) Hartung as their uncle and aunt. Mary Clara Silverthorn was born 19 January 1896 in Delaware, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1 March 1989 (Loughborough 2001; Social Security Death Index). In 1920, Earl and Mary lived in Hope Township. They owned a farm, but it was mortgaged. The couple had one child, their one year old daughter Alice. Mary's widower father, Albert Silverthorn, lived with the couple. He was a 67 year old native of New Jersey. Albert was not employed (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 159, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 9 January 1920). By 1930, Earl and Mary Clara had two children, 11 year old Alice and 4 year old Earl (their third child, Ralph Clayton, was born sometime after the 1930 census). The family lived on the Delaware Road in Hope Township. They owned their farm and they owned a radio. Albert Silverthorn still lived with his daughter and son-in-law. He was 78 years old and worked as a farm laborer. Earl Smith also had a hired hand named George W. Schoch. He as 51 years old and was a native of New Jersey (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-11, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6A, 14 April 1930).

Earl Smith died 20 June 1949 in Knowlton Township (Loughborough 2001). Mary Clara Smith lived almost another 40 years. She died on 1 March 1989. According to family historian Rick Loughborough (2001), she died in Farmingville, Virginia. However, the Social Security Death Index gives her last residence as Andover, Sussex County, New Jersey. Mary Clara's daughter, Alice Smith Gibbs, was a resident of Andover in 1996 (Social Security Death Index). It is possible that Mary Clara lived with her daughter part of the time and with one of her sons in Virginia another part of the year.

Earl Cecil Smith and Mary Clara Silverthorn had 3 children. They had 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and at least 4 second great-grandchildren. Total descendants equals 35.
