READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

IRA C. READ4

338 . IRA C. READ3 (Martin Freese Read3, Samuel Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 29 June 1838 in New Jersey and died 20 December 1911 in New Jersey. In 1860, Ira was still living at home with his parents in Hope Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 8). He married circa 1864, Margaret A. Loller, the daughter of John Loller and Ann Decker. She was born 25 September 1836, in New Jersey and died 19 December 1911 in New Jersey. According to the 1910 census, Margaret's father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother was born in Canada of English ancestry. However, the 1880 census indicates that both of her parents were born in New Jersey. Her name is given in the 1880 and 1910 census as "Margaret A. Read," but her tombstone records her name as "Margaretta A. Loller." Margaret's nephew, Virgil Loller (son of her brother Jefferson Loller) was married to Abbie Read. Abbie's father, John Read and Ira C. Read were first cousins.

The 1870 census places Ira and Margaret in Hope Township. They had two living children, Ada and Olivia. The family owned a farm valued at $6,000 and owned a personal estate worth $2,125. The census spells the family's surname with a double "e" and not the "ea" (1870 United States Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 182A, 16 August 1870).

By 1910, Ira and Margaret lived on the Bridgeville Road in Hope Township. They had sold their farm and were renting their house. None of their children or grandchildren were resident in the household in 1910. According to the census, Ira was not employed, but lived on his "own income."
