WILLIAM CLINTON HARTUNG6
3390. WILLIAM CLINTON "Clint" HARTUNG6 (Hulda Smith5, Elizabeth Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 23 July 1880 in New Jersey, probably in Delaware, Knowlton Township, Warren County and died 14 May 1971 (Anon 2001; Social Security Death Index). As he was born after the 1880 census cut off date he does not appear on that census. He does appear on the 1900 census. He lived at home with his parents on their farm in Knowlton Township and was employed as a farm laborer, probably working on the home farm (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7B, 28 June 1900).
Clinton married on 15 December 1901, Blanche Evelyn Young, the daughter of John Hazelett Young and Elvira Ann Vanatta. The wedding was performed by the Rev. W.B. Sheldan of the Oxford First Presbyterian Church in Hazen, Warren County, New Jersey. The witnesses to the wedding were Charles Beers and Ada Smith. According to their marriage certifiacte, Clint Hartung was from Delaware, New Jersey and Blanche Young was from Rocksburg, Harmony Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Blanche was born 24 September 1883 in Rocksburg and died 16 October 1946 (Anon 2005; Long Island 2005; Loughborough 2001). By 1910, the couple lived on a rented farm along the River Road between Roxburg Street and Hutchinson Street in Harmony Township, Warren County. They had four children: Gilbert, Jennie, George and Harry. Gilbert and Jennie were in school, the other children were toddlers. Clinton Hartung was a general farmer. He had a hired hand in 1910, 16 year old Albert Lightcup, who was a native of Pennsylvania. Albert was still in school in 1910 and had been out of work for 10 weeks in 1909 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Harmony Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 8A, 2 May 1910).
Clint and Blanche still resided in Harmony Township in 1929. They are listed in the History and Directory of Warren County, New Jersey as residents of the Roxburg area. Their names appear as "W. Clinton Hartung, farmer" and and "Mrs. W. Clinton Hartung", housewife. Two of thier sons also appeared in the directory: George was listed as farmer, Harry as a student (Shampanore 1929:S16). Harry Hartung married in March of 1929 and his borther George married in June of 1930. In 1930, only two of Clinton and Blanche's six children were still living at home: Stuart and Gertrude. The four older children were all married. The Hartungs owned their dairy farm in Harmony Township and they owned a radio (1930 United States Census, Enumeration District 21-10, Harmony Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 22 April 1930). W. Clinton Hartung was listed as a resident of Harmony Township in the acknowledgements sections of Mustin's Warren County New Jersey 1931 (page 58). Clinton gave a financial contribution toward the publication of the booklet.
Blanche died on 26 October 1947. Clinton remarried on 18 June 1949. His second wife was Lydia Raub Hance. She was born 18 October 1892 and died 22 December 1973 (California Death Index; Social Security Death Index). Lydia was the daughter of Charles C. and Lavina (Allen) Raub. Charles Raub was a farmer in Harmony Township in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 188, Harmony Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 2A, 4 June 1900). When Lydia was 24 years old she married Charles K. Hance. They were married in either 1916 or 1917. By 1930, the Hances had two children, John (age 11) and Grace (age 8). They lived on a farm in Greenwich Township (1930 United States Census, Enumeration District 21-7, Greenwich Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 8A, 14 April 1930). By the time Clinton and Lydia were married, all the Hartung and Hance children were grown. Clinton's daughter Gertrude married Ellis Snovel, Jr. on 26 March 1949, about a month and a half before Clinton married Lydia (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughborough 2001).
Clinton resided in New Jersey for the rest of his life. His social security number was issued in New Jersey between 1955 and 1957.
