JAY JOHNSON HARTUNG6

3391. JAY JOHNSON HARTUNG6 (Hulda Smith5, Elizabeth Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 30 August 1882 in Warren County, New Jersey, probably in Knowlton Township and died 10 March 1971, in Pinellass County, Florida (Anon 2001; Florida Death Index; Long Island 2005; Loughbourough 2001; Social Security Death Index.) The Florida death index, the Social Security death index, and Jay's World War I draft registration card give his birth date as 30 August 1882. However, all the web gedcoms give his birth date as 30 October 1882 (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughbourough 2001). In 1900, he lived at home with his parents on their farm in Knowlton Township. Jay was employed as a farm laborer, probably working on the home farm (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7B, 28 June 1900).

Jay married his first wife in 1904 or 1905. She was Minnie Dunfield and was born circa 1879 in New Jersey. In 1910, Jay and Minnie lived on a rented farm in Lower Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania—which just across the Delaware River from where Jay had grown up. The couple did not have children. Jay was a stock and grain farmer. He had a hired hand name Earl Evans who was 16 years old. Earl was a native of Pennsylvania, as was his mother. His father was from Wales (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 96, Lower Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 18B, 9 May 1910).

Minnie Dunfield Hartung died in 1913 (Loughborough 2001). Jay married his second wife Anna Sarson in about 1914. She was born 23 March 1884 in New Jersey and died 22 March 1954 (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughbourough 2001). Their first child Kenneth was born in Pennsylvania in 1916, probably in Northampton County. On 12 September 1918, Jay Hartung registered for the draft in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He gave his address as RD2 Bangor, Pennsylvania. His next-of-kin was Anna Hartung of the same address. The registration gives Jay's age as 36 (birth date of 30 August 1882). It described him as tall and of medium build with grey eyes and grey hair (World War I Draft Registration).

Jay and Anna lived in Northampton County, Pennsylvania until at least the mid-1920s. In 1920, Jay, Anna and their two eldest children, Kenneth and Doris, lived on a farm in Washington Township in Northampton County. They owned the farm, but it was mortgaged. Jay had a hired hand named Alfred Hunt. Alfred was the 19 year old son of English immigrants. Neither Kenneth nor Doris were in school. Kenneth was 3 and Doris was an infant (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 159, Washington Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 4A, 14 January 1920). Two additional daughters were born in Northampton County after 1920. Edna arrived in December 1922 and Anna Lucille (known as Lucille) in 1924 (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughbourough 2001). Anna Sarson Hartung was a Sunday School teacher at the Christ Luthern Church in Stone Church,Northampton County. A souvenir pamphlet published in 1924 for the church's 150th anniversary lists "Mrs. Jay J. Hartung, Teacher Young People's Bible Class" (Anon 1924:5). By 1930, the family had left Northampton County and settled in North Coventry Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Jay was employed as a commerical salesman in the feed industry. He and Anna owned their home, which was valued at $8,000. They had four children—Kenneth, Doris, Edna and Lucille—all of whom were in school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 15-54, North Coventry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, sheet 26B, 2 May 1930).

Jay and Anna's son Kenneth married Elizabeth Abel on 25 November 1937. Two months later their daughter Edna Jane died on the 14th of January 1938, she was just past her 15th birthday. The Hartungs lived in North Coventry with their two younger daughters through the years 1938 through 1942. In May of 1942, their eldest daughter Doris married John Davis Knauer of Pottstown (Pottstown Mercury, 26 May 1952). Lucille Hartung remained at home throughout the second World War. In June 1947, Jay Hartung was admitted to the Pottstown Hospital for surgery. His admission was published in the local paper on the 19th (Pottstown Mercury, 19 June 1947). The procedure appears to have gone well and he was soon home. Six months later, he and Anna hosted a party for their daughter Lucille at which she announced her engagement to Donald R. Schaeffer, a student at Muhlenberg College (Pottstown Mercury, 16 December 1947). They were married on Palm Sunday 1948 (Pottstown Mercury, 22 March 1948).

How long Jay and Anna remained in North Coventry is unclear. By 1947, they lived in on RD 1 Pottstown. Pottstown stradles the Montgomery/Chester County lines in Pennsylvania. They were there through at least 1952. They were in Pottstown May of that year when their son-in-law Donald Shaeffer was ordained as a Luthern minister (Pottstown Mercury, 17 May 1952). However, according to the social security death index, Jay's social security number was issued in Missouri before 1951. When he was Missouri, or if he was even there, are still up to question. Anna died in 1954 at the age of 69. It is possible that they were still living in Pennsylvania at the time of her death. The Washington Star, in Washington, Warren County, New Jersey carried a notice of her death on the 22nd of March 1954. According to their account she was a former resident of Washington. Jay eventually moved to Florida. He was living in Clearwater, Pinellas County, Florida when he died in 1971 (Florida Death Index; Social Security Death Index).

Jay Hartung and Anna Sarson had 4 children who were born between 1916 and 1924. They had at least 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Total identified descendants equals 14.
