CHARLES GWINNUP HARTUNG6
and
HELEN MABELLE SWAYZE6

3393. CHARLES GWINNUP HARTUNG6 (Hulda Smith5, Elizabeth Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 31 January 1895 in Warren County, New Jersey, probably in Knowlton Township and died 25 August 1988 (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughbourough 2001; Social Security Death Index.) In 1900, he lived at home with his parents and older brothers and sister on the family farm in Knowlton Township (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7B, 28 June 1900). Charles was the only child still living at home at 1910. He was 15 year old and was still in school. His father, George Hartung, was still a farmer. Charles worked as a laborer on the farm. His father also had a hired hand named J. Sigurson, a 39 year old immigrant from Norway (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Delaware, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 5A, 29 April 1910).

Charles Hartung married twice. His first wife was his fourth cousin, (3627) HELEN MABELLE SWAYZE6, the daughter of Irvine "Clinton" Swayze 5 (Elizabeth Osmun4, Sarah Ann Read3, David Read2, Joseph Read1) and Rebecca Smith. Helen was born 2 August 1897 in New Jersey and died 3 February 1986 (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughbourough 2001). In 1910, Helen lived with her parents and her grandmother Rachel Smith in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Clinton Swayze was a farmer. Helen Swayze was 12 years old and was in school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Delaware, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 5A, 29 April 1910).

Charles and Helen were married in about 1914. In 1920, they lived on a rented farm in Hope Township, Warren County. Charles was a general farmer. The couple had two children, 4 year old Ramon Jay Hartung and 10 month old Ruth May Hartung. Their third child, Ralph Edward Hartung, would be born in November of 1920 (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 159, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 10B, 30 January 1920; Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughbourough 2001). By 1930, Charles and Helen had purchased a farm on the Hope to Delaware Road in Hope Township. They had also bought a radio. Their household in 1930 included Charles's 75 year old father George Hartung, their son Ralph and daughter Ruth, and a new baby, 3month old Marian. Their oldest son Ramon was living with Helen's parents, Clinton and Rebecca Swayze, in Knowlton Township, while he worked part time in a grocery store and he attended school. Ramon's grandfather, Clinton Swayze was the manager of a feed store (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-13, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 4 April 1930; Enumeration District 21-11, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6A, 14 April 1930).

Sometime between 1930 and 1937, Charles and Helen divorced. Charles married Charlotte Quig as his second wife on 20 February 1937. Charlotte was born 30 July 1912 and died 3 January 1957. The couple continued to live in Hope Township. They had one son, Robert Charles Hartung. During World War II, Charles's eldest son by Helen, Ramon Hartung, was a Lt. Commander in the United States Navy (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughbourough 2001; Ramseyburg Cemetery). After the war, Charles continued to live in Hope Township. In 1954, he was the president of the Livestock Co-operative Auction Market Association. The Association was formed in 1940 by the Extension Agents of Morris, Warren and Sussex County as a market where farmers from the three counties could consign their cattle for auction (Nunn 1955:181-182).

Charlotte Quig Hartung died in Janaury 1957. She was buried in Ramseyburg Cemetery in Delaware in the same plot with Charles's parents—George and Hulda (Smith) Hartung—and his sister Jennie Hartung Gibbs. Helen Swayze Hartung died in February 1986, it is not known where she was buried. Charles Hartung lived until 25 August 1988. He was living across the Delaware River from his childhood home in Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pennsylvania when he died (Social Security Death Index). He was buried with Charlotte in Ramseyburg Cemetery. His son Ralph Hartung, who died in 1963 at the age of 42, was also buried in the family plot. Later, when Charles and Helen's son Ramon Hartung died (1992), he too was buried in the family plot. Their graves were visited on 15 April 2005.

Charles Hartung and Helen Swayze had 4 children who were born between 1915 and 1930. Charles had one son by his second wife, Charlotte Quig. Total children equals 5. He had at least 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchild. Total identified descendants equals 28.
