GILBERT CLINTON HARTUNG7
3408. GILBERT CLINTON HARTUNG7 (William Clinton Hartung6, Hulda Smith5, Elizabeth Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 12 September 1902 in Bridgeville, Warren County, New Jersey and died 31 October 1969 (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Longborough 2001; Social Security Death Index). In 1910, he lived with his parents and younger siblings on a rented farm in Harmony Township, Warren County, New Jersey that was located along the River Road between Roxburg Street and Hutchinson Street. Gilbert and his sister Jennie were in school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Harmony Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 8A, 2 May 1910).
Gilbert married three times. His first wife was Margaret S. Van Horn, the daughter of Garrett A. and Amelia A. Van Horn of Hope Township. They were married on 10 April 1922. Margaret was born 10 March 1904. She was the youngest of the nine children of Garrett and Amelia Van Horn. Her father was a farmer and Margaret grew up on a farm along the Delaware Road in Hope Township (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, 10 May 1910, sheet 15B; 1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 159, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, 6 January 1920, sheet 2A). She and Gilbert were married for a short period of time. Margaret died 13 September 1927, about a year after the birth of her youngest daughter Eleanore (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Longborough 2001).
Gilbert appears on the 1930 census as a widower. He lived with his three children by Margaret (Adrain, Norman and Eleanor) on a farm in White Township near the town of Belvidere in Warren County, New Jersey. Gilbert did not own the farm, he was renting it. He had a housekeeper named Mary A. Greene. She was a 61 year old widow and was a native of New York. The three Hartung children were all under the age of 7. Gilbert needed someone to manage the hosuehold and the children while he ran the farm. He ran the farm with the help of a hired hand named Clayton Smith. Clayton was 23 years old. He was a native of Virginia, although his parents were both born in Iowa (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-37, White Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 8A, 22 April 1930).
Gilbert married his second wife on 14 April 1934, four years after the census. She was Clara E. Fox (Anon 2001; Latter Day Saints IGI; Longborough 2001). Clara was born 3 March 1910 and died unknown (Anon 2001; Latter Day Saints IGI; Longborough 2001). The couple had six children together: five sons and one daughter. Gilbert lived in Harmony Township in 1964. Clara was not a resident of the household, but their two youngest sons, Donald and Paul, were residents of his household (Citizens Committee 1964:29). Gilbert married his third wife, Clara Nordenboos, on 27 July 1966. Gilbert lived in the Philipsburg, Warren County, New Jersey area at the time of his death in 1969 (Social Security Death Index).
Gilbert Hartung and Margaret Van Horn had 3 children who were born between 1922 and 1926. Gilbert had 6 children by his second wife Clara Fox. The total number of children by both marriages was 9. He had at least 23 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Total number of descendants equals 57.

3434. (i.) ADRAIN CLINTON HARTUNG8, was born 5 October 1923 in Rocksburg, Harmony Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Anon 2001). His mother died when he was about four years old. In 1930, Adrain lived with his widower father and his two younger siblings on a rented farm in near Belvidere in White Township, Warren County, New Jersey. The family was cared for by their housekeeper, Mary A. Greene. Adrian was the only Hartung child in school in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-37, White Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 8A, 22 April 1930). Adrian married on 17 February 1945, Florence Patricia "Pat" Stem, in Harmony, Harmony Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Florence was born 15 January 1923 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania and died 24 May 2004 in Warren Hospital, Phillipsburg, Warren County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Harold Stem and Susan Wallace. Pat was a 1943 graduate of Easton High School. She worked at the Easton Woolsworth and at Bushkill Park. At one time she was employed as a census taker for the United States Department of Agriculutral. She was a member of the Moravian Church of Easton. According to her obituarty she was "a farmer's wife and a mother, an avid doll collector and had been a Girl Scout leader for many years." She was also a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America. Pat lived in Pohatcong Township at the time of her death. The funeral was held at Rupell Funeral Home in Phillipsburg on Thursday, 27 May 2004. She is buried in Belvidere Cemetery, Warren County, New Jersey ( The Express Times, 25 May 2004). Adrain owned a small airstrip near Phillipsburg (2NJ5 Hartung) in March 2004. However, I could not find a listing for the airport in May 2005 (GlobalAir.com). He also served as an Industiral Commissioner for the Township Of Pohatcong in Warren County. Children of Adrain Hartung and Pat Stem:

3435. (ii.) NORMAN MELTON HARTUNG8, was born 3 January 1925 in New Jersey and died 19 January 2003 (Social Security Death Index). His mother died when he was about a year and a half old. In 1930, Norman lived with his widower father and his two siblings on a rented farm in near Belvidere in White Township, Warren County, New Jersey. The family was cared for by their housekeeper, Mary A. Greene. Norman had not yet started school in the spring of 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-37, White Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 8A, 22 April 1930). Norman married on 22 September 1945, Helen Homa, the daughter of John and Helen Homa. Helen was born 13 June 1927 in New Jersey (Anon 2001; Longborough 2001; Long Island 2005). Her parents owned a farm in Pohatcong Township, Warren County, New Jersey in 1930. Helen was the youngest of their six children and their only daughter (as of 1930). John and Helen Homa were immigrants from Czechoslavkia, all of their children were born in the United States (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-33, Pohatcong Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 20B, 29 April 1930). Norman M. Hartung lived in Ormond Beach, Volusia County, Florida when he died in 2003 (Social Security Death Index). Children of Norman Hartung and Helen Homa:

ELEANOR EVELYN HARTUNG8, was born 28 July 1926 in Roxburg, Harmony Township, New Jersey and died 2 June 2001, possibly in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey (Anon 2001; Social Security Death Index). Her mother died a little over a year after she was born. In 1930, Eleanor was 3 years old. She lived with his widower father her two older brothers and the family's housekeeper, Mary A. Greene on a rented farm in near Belvidere in White Township, Warren County, New Jersey (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-37, White Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 8A, 22 April 1930). Eleanor married on 25 June 1949, in Columbia, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, James Anthony Robb. He was born 15 July 1922 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died 22 December 1986 at Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey (Anon 2001; Longborough 2001; Long Island 2005). Barbara married on 9 February 1953, in Elkton, Maryland, Francis Weston Jago, the son of Weston and Margaret Jago. He was born 9 October 1928 in Pennsylvania and died March 1987 (Anon 2001; Social Security Death Index). On 5 April 1930, "Weston F. Jago" was 1 year and 5 months old. He lived with his parents and two older sisters at 235 Charles Street in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Francis's father was employed as a weaver in a silk mill (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 48-52, Ward 9, Easton City, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 6B, 5 April 1930). After Barbara and Francis were married, they resided in Harmony Township. In 1964, they lived in Harmony with seven of their ten children—Robert, Diana, Linda, Mary, Michael, John and Kathleen (Citizens Committee 1964:30). By 1968 or 1969, the family had moved to Pennsylvania. Barbara's social security number was issued there in those years (Social Security Death Index). A Francis W. Jago appears in the Social Security Death Index as born 14 October 1927 and died March 1987. His Social Security number was issued in Pennsylvania before 1951.
