DORIS MILDRED HARTUNG KNAUER7

3415. DORIS MILDRED HARTUNG7 (Jay Johnson Hartung6, Hulda Smith5, Elizabeth Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 4 August 1919 in Bangor, Northampton County, Pennsylvania and died 28 December 1992, possibly in Berks county, Pennsylvania (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughborough 2001; Social Security Death Index). Her family lived in Northampton County until at least 1924. In 1920, Doris lived on her parents's farm in Washington Township, Northampton County. The census lists her as a five month old infant (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 159, Washington Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 4A, 14 January 1920). Both of her younger sisters were born in Northampton County after 1920 (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughborough 2001). Her mother Anna Sarson Hartung was a Sunday School teacher at the Christ Luthern Church in Stone Church, Northampton County. A souvenir pamphlet published in 1924 for the church's 150th anniversary lists "Mrs. Jay J. Hartung, Teacher Young People's Bible Class" (Anon 1924:5). By 1930, Doris's family had moved to North Coventry Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania. She lived with her parents in the township and attended school with her siblings—Kenneth, Edna and Lucille. Her father Jay Hartung was employed as a commerical salesman in the feed industry. The family owned their home, which was valued at $8,000 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 15-54, North Coventry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, sheet 26B, 2 May 1930). Her brother Kenneth graduated from North Coventry High School in 1934; it is probable that Doris attended the same high school (Pottstown Mercury, 13 July 1953).

Doris married on 30 May 1942, in the First Methodist Church of Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, John Davis Knauer. John was born 30 March 1920 and died 18 June 2003 (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughborough 2001; Pottstown Mercury, 26 May 1952; Social Security Death Index). Kenneth and Elizabeth had three children between 1943 and 1953: Jonna, Kathy and Davis. The family made its home in Stoney Creek Mills, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Stoney Creek Mills is just to the east of Reading, Pennsylvania. The Pottstown Mercury, reported on the family's participation in several family and community events in the 1940s. There were reports in the society pages of the paper associated with the wedding of Doris's sister Lucille Hartung to Donald Schaeffer in the spring of 1948. In February, Doris and her mother attended a surprise bridal shower for Lucille given by Mrs. William Miller, Jr. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Keifer. The night before the wedding (20 March 1948), Doris and John Knauer hosted a dinner party in honor of the bride at their home in Stoney Creek Mills. Doris was Lucille's matron of honor and John was the soloist during the wedding at the First Methodist Church in Pottstown (Pottstown Mercury, 4 February 1948, 20 March 1948, 22 March 1948). In the fall of 1948, John Knauer sang as part of the program at the Mother's Club in Glen Moore, Pennsylvania. Doris accompanied him on the piano while he sang "Sylvia," "Trees," and "Without a Song" (Pottstown Mercury, 11 October 1948).

Doris Hartung Knauer resided in the Reading area at the time of her death in 1992. John Davis Knauer was still a resident of the area when he died in 2003 (Social Security Death Index).
