3417. ANNE "LUCILLE" HARTUNG7 (Jay Johnson Hartung6, Hulda Smith5, Elizabeth Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 19 August 1924 in Bangor, Northampton County, Pennsylvania and died unknown (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughborough 2001; Social Security Death Index). She was called by her middle name—Lucille. Her family lived in Northampton County until at least 1924. All of her older siblings were also born in Northampton County and her mother Anna Sarson Hartung was a Sunday School teacher at the Christ Luthern Church in Stone Church. A souvenir pamphlet published in 1924 for the church's 150th anniversary lists "Mrs. Jay J. Hartung, Teacher Young People's Bible Class" (Anon 1924:5). By 1930, Lucille's family had moved to North Coventry Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania. she lived with her parents in the township and attended school with her older siblings—Kenneth, Doris and Edna. Her father Jay Hartung was employed as a commerical salesman in the feed industry. The family owned their home, which was valued at $8,000 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 15-54, North Coventry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, sheet 26B, 2 May 1930). Her brother Kenneth graduated from North Coventry High School in 1934; it is probable that Lucille attended the same high school (Pottstown Mercury, 13 July 1953).

Lucille married on Palm Sunday 1948 (21 March), in the First Methodist Church of Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Donald Raymond Schaeffer. Donald was born 10 December 1923 and was the son of Christine Schaeffer. At the time of the wedding, Lucille worked in the office of the Vaughn Knitting Mill. Donald was a student at Muhlenburg College. During World War II, Donald served three years in the United States Army in the European theater (Anon 2001; Long Island 2005; Loughborough 2001; Pottstown Mercury, 22 March 1948). The wedding was preceded by several parties. In December 1947, Lucille's parents held a party to announce her engagement to Donald. The Pottstown Mercury, ran the folllwoing announcement on 16 December 1947 under the title "Engaged" (a photograph of Lucille was also included with the announcement):

Engagement of Miss Lucille Hartung (above) daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jay J. Hartung of Pottstown Rd 2, to Mr. Donald R. Schaeffer, of 421 High Street, was announced Saturday Night at a party at her home.

In February 1948, a surprise bridal shower was given by Mrs. William Miller, Jr. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Keifer. Lucille's mother and sister Doris Hartung Knauer were among those attending the party. The night before the wedding (20 March 1948), Doris and John Knauer hosted a dinner party in honor of the bride at their home in Stoney Creek Mills, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The wedding took place on 21 March was performed by the Rev. Horace N. Olewiler of the First Methodist Church. He was assisted by the Rev. George Mack of Hershery. Lucille's sister Doris Hartung Knauer was her matron of honor, her brother Kenneth Hartung was one of the ushers. Kenneth's son Jay Hartung was the ring bearer and Doris's husband John Knauer was the soloist (Pottstown Mercury, 4 February 1948, 20 March 1948, 22 March 1948).

After the wedding, Lucille and Donald lived with her parents in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Donald was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church on Hanover and Walnut Streets in Pottstown. After he graduated from Muhlenberg College in 1948, he entered Mount Airy Seminary in Philadelphia. He completed seminary in 1952 and was ordained at the 205th convention of the Lutheran Ministerium of Pennsylvania, which was held in Buck Hill Falls, Pennsylvania in May 1952. He was installed at Reformation Lutheran Church in Reiffton, Pennsylvania on Sunday 25 May 1952 (Pottstown Mercury, 17 May 1952). Reformation Lutheran was a young congregation. It had been incorporated on 10 April 1949 while Donald was still in seminary. It's first pastor was the Rev. Bertram C. Gilbert, who also served the Schwarzwald Church in Jacksonwald. The church itself was an old army barracks chapel which had been moved to Reiffton from Stone Harbor, New Jersey. Rev. Gilbert resigned in 1951 when he was recalled to military service. The Rev. Clyde Frey was the stated supply for a few months until Donald Schaeffer became the pastor in May 1952. Donald was the first full time pastor at the church (Bertram Gilbert had served two churches at the same time). The church in Reiffton purchased its fits parsonage in 1952, which was located at 30 East 34th Street in Reiffton. Donald and Lucille lived in Reiffton until Donald resigned in February 1954 (Trexler 1959). Donald and Lucille had three children: Eric, Donna and Victoria.
