LUTHER OSMUN5

3422. LUTHER OSMUN5 (Charles Irving Osmun4, Sarah Ann Read3, David Read2, Joseph Read1) was born August 1883 in New Jersey, probably in Knowlton Township, Warren County and died 1964. Luther appears on the 1900 United States census as a 16 year old. He and his brother Clayton attended school for 7 months during the 1909 through 1910 school year; while their younger brother Orton attended school for 9 months. Luther and Clayton probably had a shorter school year because they worked for their father on the family farm during the year (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Sheets 6A-B, 25 June 1900; Ramseyburg Cemetery). Luther married in late 1907 or early 1908, Margaretta "Retta" Higgins, the daughter of Owen T. and Mary L. Higgins. Retta was born 1877 in New York and died in 1964. Retta's father was born in Ireland and had come to the United States in 1870. Her mother was a native of New Jersey. Retta was the only surviving child of the three Higgins children. After she married, Retta and Luther lived with Owen and Mary HIggins in Knowlton Township. Luther was employed as a farmer and in doing odd jobs. Retta was a teacher in the Public Schools. Owen Higgins owned the farm that the two families lived on free and clear of mortgages. Luther and Retta had one child in 1910, their son Somers, who was a year old (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 26 April 1910). Luther went back to school and became a teacher. In 1930, he was a principal in the Linden, New Jersey public school system. He and Retta lived with their three sons—Somers, Edward and Arthur—at 329 in Linden, Union County, New Jersey. Somers worked as an electrician for an elevator manufacturer. Edward and Arthur were both still in school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 20-94, 2nd Ward, Linden City, Union County, New Jersey, Sheet 9A, 10 April 1930). Luther and Retta both died in 1964. They are buried in Ramseyburg Cemetery, Delaware, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their graves were field checked on 15 April 2005.
