SARAH MARIA READ4

347 .SARAH MARIA READ4 (Samuel D. Read3, Samuel Read2, Joseph Read1)was born 25 December 1842 in New Jersey, (Latter Day Saints Files, hereinafter LDS, AFN:3317-G8) possibly in Hope Township and died 21 September 1885. Sarah married on 29 November 1865, Jacob Cummins Ayers, son of Robert and Malinda Ayers. He was born 25 June 1843, Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 4 May 1911 in Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey (LDS AFN:3317-DW). After Sarah Maria's death, Jacob settled in Phelps County, Missouri. He married as his second wife, Margaret Elizabeth Mings, on 12 March 1887, in Phelps County, Missouri. She was the daughter of William Christopher Mings and Anna Mary "Nancy" Neel. She was born 25 January 1856 in Arkansas and died 8 November 1911 in Phelps County, Missouri (LDS AFN:3317-F3). CHILDREN OF SARAH MARIA READ AND JACOB CUMMINS AYERS:

2432. (i.) WALTER CLEVELAND AYERS5, was born 12 October 1866 in Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 25 May 1924 in Phelps County, Missouri (LDS AFN:33T8-D2 and IGI). He married on 5 March 1890, Louisa D. Goethe. She was born circa 1870 in Bavaria and died after 1930 (LDS IGI; 1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 67, Cold Spring Township, Phelps County, Missouri, sheet 2A; 1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 81-3, Cold Spring Township, Phelps County, Missouri, sheet 7B).

2433. (ii.) SAMUEL R. AYERS5, was born 22 November 1868 in Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1 June 1890, location unknown (LDS AFN:33T8-F7; LDS Batch #7100047, sheet 16, source call 0539001, film). In 1880, he lived with his parents on their farm in Independence Township, Warren County and attended school (1880 United States Federal Census, Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 434D). He may have been one of the children of Jacob and Sarah (Read) Ayers who migrated to Missouri with Jacob in about 1886. His bothers Walter and Robert both lived in the Mid-West. Walter was married in Missouri in 1890 and raised his family there (LDS AFN:33T8-D2 and IGI). Robert eventually settled in Illinois (LDS AFN:3378-HK). However, there is no listing for Samuel in the obituaries of the Rolla, Missouri newspaper, The Rolla Weekly Herald . There is an obituary for his infant half brother, William M. Ayers, who died on 26 November 1894 and was buried in Rolla Cemetery in Phelps County, Missouri.

1036. (iii.) ELIZABETH ANN "LIZZIE" AYERS5, was born 30 October 1870 in Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 10 August 1956 (LDS AFN:33T8-GD; LDS Batch #C001574, film; LDS IGI: LDS Compact Disc #46, Pin #20148, 20150, 20151). In 1880, she lived with her parents on their farm in Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey (1880 United States Federal Census, Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersy, page 434D). She married on 22 January 1890, her second cousin (522) Flavel McGee Kerr,5 (Isaac R. Kerr4, Phebe Read 3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1). He was the son of Isaac Read Kerr and Sarah Elizabeth Hazen. He was born 8 January 1867 in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1953. They are buried in Yellow Frame Presbyterian Chruch, Frelinghuysen, Warren County, New Jersey.

1037. (iv.) ROBERT JACOB AYERS5, was born 11 August 1872 in Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 7 August 1960 in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois (AFN:33T8-HK). He married on 30 August 1893, Alice Burnetta Smith. She was born 30 October 1869 in Benton County, Arkansas and died 12 July 1934 in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois (AFN:C2LN-S8).

2434. (v.) LINNA AYERS5, was born 4 December 1873 in Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1909 (LDS AFN:33T8-JQ). In 1880, she lived with her parents on their farm in Independence Township, Warren County (1880 United States Federal Census, Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersy, page 434D). Linna married a Mr. Savercool, the LDS files give the spelling of his last name as Savercough. However, given that the family name is generally spelled as S-a-v-e-r-c-o-o-l in Warren County, I haven chosen to list it as such here. Mr. Savercool was born circa 1869 (LDS AFN: C2LN-TF). She appears to be one of the children of Jacob and Sarah (Read) Ayers who remained behind in Warren County when her father and older brothers migrated to Phelps County Missouri circa 1886. She probably died in Warren County.

2435. (vi.) NELSON E. AYERS5, was born 21 December 1875 in Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1948 (LDS AFN: 33T8-KW; LDS Batch #7100047, sheet 17, source call 0539001, film). He married on 9 September 1905, his third cousin, (911) Mary "Mamye" Wildrick,5 (Ruth Ann Read4, Samuel Cooke Read3, Aaron Read2, Joseph Read1). Mamye was born 23 March 1880 in Warren County, New Jersey and died 16 February 1915. She was buried in Union Brick Cemetery, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Nelson married second, circa 1920 Sophie (Last Name Unknown). She was born circa 1875 and died after 1930.

2436. (vii.) GEORGE "LUNDY" AYERS5, was born 13 June 1878 in Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died March 1969 in Sussex County, New Jersey (LDS AFN:33T8-L3; LDS Batch #7100047, sheet 17, source call 0539001, film; Social Security Death Index). In 1880, he lived with his parents on their farm in Independence Township, Warren County (1880 United States Federal Census, Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersy, page 434D). He appears to have been one of the children of Jacob and Sarah (Read) Ayers who remained behind in New Jersey when his father and older brothers migrated to Missouri in 1886. He married circa 1925, Agnes C. Hendershot, (LDS AFN:C2LN-VL) the daughter of Jerry and Eliza Hendershot. According to the 1930 census, she was born circa 1894. IThe LDS files give a marriage date of 29 May1898, which is impossible given that Agnes was four years old in 1898. In 1930, Lundy and Agnes lived in Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey. They resided with Agnes's parents and her sister Anna Hendershot at 109 High Street. Jerry Hendershot (age 73) was still employed as a farmer, alothough the family did not live on a farm. Anna Hendershot (age 27) was a high school teacher. Lundy Ayers was an estate caretaker. According to the census he was 45 years old, which would place his birth in 1885, not 1878. The census gives his name as "Lundy G. Ayers." Agnes Hendershot's mother, Eliza (age 69) was born in New Jersey, but her parents were from the Irish Free States. Jerry Hendershot owned the house on HIgh Street, which was valued at $5,500. Lundy and Agnes did not have children in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey, enumeration district 19-18, sheet 1A, 15 April 1930). According to the Social Security Death Index, George was living in Branchville, Sussex County, New Jersey at the time of his death.

2437. (viii.) LEWIS SCHNECK AYERS5, was born 1 February 1881 in Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 30 March 1971 in Warren County, New Jersey (LDS AFN:33T8-M8; Social Security Death Index). He appears to have been one of the children of Jacob and Sarah (Read) Ayers who remained behind in New Jersey when his father and older brothers migrated to Missouri in 1886. According to the Social Security Death Index, Lewis was living in Vienna, Warren County, New Jersey at the time of his death. He married circa 1910, Mabel Force. The LDS files indicate that he was born in Missouri and married Mabel in Missouri (LDS AFN:C2LN-VL). However, the Force family is a one of Warren County's old families. Given that he was living in Vienna at the time of his death, it seems likely that Louis stayed behind in New Jersey when his father and older brothers migrated west and the he married in New Jersey, not Missouri.
