READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS
JOHN C. READ4
348 . JOHN C. READ4 (Samuel D. Read3, Samuel Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 28 June 1848 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509811) and died 16 May 1934 near Johnsonburg, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Blairstown Press, 24 May 1934). He appears as a resident of his parents's household (Samuel D. Read and Abigail Curliss) on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census (1850 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 425A; 1860 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey; 1870 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 72A). The family lived in Hope Township in 1850, but had moved to Frelinghuysen Township by 1860. John attended school during the 1860 census year. In 1870, John was 22 years, he worked on his father's farm as a laborer. Both of John's parents died in the 1870s. His mother died in 1874 and his father in 1876. John continued to work as a farm laborer. In 1880, he resided with the family of John R. and Sarah Hartung in Hope Township and worked as a laborer on their farm. The census gives his age as 30, which was two years less than his actual age (1880 United States Federal Census, enumeration district 199, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 422B).
John married sometime in late 1880, Cornelia A. "Nelly" Blaine, the daughter of Amos and Jane Blaine of Blairstown Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 567, 20 July 1860, the census gives her name as "Nelly"). She was born April 1855 in New Jersey (1900 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 189, sheet 3A, 5 June 1900) and died 1921 (Mount Hermon Cemetery). In 1870, the Blaine family lived in Hope Township. Their farm was listed as dwelling 220. John's Uncle Martin F. Read lived in dwelling 219 and his father's first cousin, Isaac S. Read lived in dwelling 222 (1870 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 182B, 16 August 1870).
The 1900 United States Federal Census for Warren County, New Jersey places John and Cornelia Read in Hope Township. The couple lived on a rented farm with their eight children: Fayette, Sadie, Robbins, Ethel, Abbie, John, Harry and Mary. According to the census, Cornelia was the mother of eight children, all of whom were living (1900 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 189, sheet 3A, 5 June 1900). In 1910, the Reads lived on Mount Hermon Road in Hope Township. John was a laborer who worked on local farms. The Reads did not own their home, they were renters. The household consisted of John and Cornelia, whose name is given as "Nellie A. Read," three of their children: Sadie, Harry and Marie, and Cornelia's six year old neice, Annie Blaine. The census states that John and Cornelia had been married for 30 years and had 3 children. However, I think there was a misunderstanding in the taking of this data by the census taker. The 1900 census listed eight children born between 1881 and 1900 living in the Read household. In 1910, three of the eight children were living in the house. This may be why the census states that John and Nellie only had three chlidren (1910 United States Federal Census, enumeration district 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12B, 4 May 1910).
By 1920, only Sadie and Annie at home with John and Nellie in Hope Township. The census lists Annie Blaine as "Annie E. Read" a daughter of John and Nellie. It appears that John and Nellie had adopted her. However, she does not appear as a surviving daughter in John's 1934 obituary. John and Nellie still rented their home in 1920. John was employed as a laborer and Nellie was doing laundry for private families in the area. Neither Sadie nor Annie were employed. Annie was in school and Sadie probably did housework (1920 United States Federal Census, enumeration district 159, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. sheet 4B, 14-15 January 1920).
Nellie Read died in 1921. She was buried in Mount Hermon Methodist Church yard (also known as "Green's Chapel"). John lived with his daughters after Nellie's death. The 1929 History and Directory of Warren County New Jersey lists John Reed retired and Sadie Reed housekeeper in Mount Hermon. "Virgie Lollar," widow, was also a resident of Mount Hermon (Shampanore 1929:15P). When the 1930 census was enumerated, John lived with his daughters Abbie Read Loller (widow of Virgil) and Sadie Read, and his granddaughters, Roberta and Dorothy Loller. Abbie was the head of the household. The house was located on Mt Hermon Road in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. John was employed as a laborer in general farm work. According to the census he had been out of work for 4 months in the year preceding the census (1930 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-11, sheet 5A, 10 April 1930). John died Wednesday, 16 May 1934. The "Mt Hermon and Knowlton" news section of the Blairstown Press of 24 May 1934 stated "We are sorry to note the passing of our old friend and neighbor, John Read, age 84 who died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Clair Linaberry, near Johnsonburg. The funeral was held at Mt Hermon church and interment was in the cemetery there." The Press also included a more formal obituary in the obituary section of the paper (note that Mrs. Walter storm was is daughter Abbie, who had remarried):
John was buried with Cornelia in the family plot in Mount Hermon. When their daughter Sadie died in 1945, she was buried with her parents. Their gravestone was field checked on 24 March 2004. It is inscribed:

On 15 February 1934, the paper reported that "Mrs. Edith Rymon has been a victim of tonsilitis the past week. Miss Ruth Myers has been a guest at the Rymon home." Later in May, they entertained Harvey's third cousins, Hazel and Majory Read (ages about 20 and 16) of Ridgefield Park in Bergen County. Their grandmother Phebe Stiles Read (widow of Samuel Read) lived in Mount Hermon. According to the paper:
The Social Security Death Index gives Columbia, Warren County, New Jersey as Harvey's place of residence at the time of his death in 1976. They were probably in the area of Mount Hermon. Alice Farne's household was dwelling 100. Robert's parents lived in dwelling 93. Alice Farne owned her farm. The census inidcates that she was a 61 year old widow and that she was a farmer. Robert was a farm laborer. Hannah was not employed outside the home. Delmor C. Flumerfelt (age 26), boarded with the family and was employed as a laborer on the farm (1920 United States Federal Census, enumeration district 159, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. sheet 4B, 14-15 January 1920). In 1910, he and Ethel rented their farm. It was listed as adjacent to Ethel's parents on the 1910 census. The Linaberrys were enumerated as dwelling 203 and family 220. John and Cornelia Read were dwelling 204 and family 221(1910 United States Federal Census, enumeration district 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12B, 4 May 1910). Ethel and Clair did not have any children when the census taker visted them on 4 May 1910. Their first child, Keneth, arrived about a month and a half later on 21 June (Mount Hermon Cemetry). By 1930, Ethel and Clair lived on the Johnsonburg/Allamuchy Road in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey. They were renting a dairy farm. The family owned a radio (1930 United States Federal Census, enumeration district 21-6, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 18 April 1930). Ethel's father was living with Ethel and Clair Children when he died in May 1934. The couple were still residents of Frelinghuyen Township, they lived near Johnsonburg (Blairstown Press, 24 May 1934). The Depression of the 1930s hit Warren County hard. Farmers were often unable to pay their property taxes because they ran their farms at a loss through much of the depression. Clair Linaberry appears on the Delinquent List for Frelinghuysen Township in the Blairstown Press, on 24 March 1938. He owned $19.45 for his 1936 taxes and $23.40 for his 1937 taxes. She lived with her parents in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 189, sheet 3A, 5 June 1900). Abbie H. Read appears as a hired girl on the 1910 United States Federal Census. She was living in the household of Alvin and Margaret Newman. The Newmans lived on Mount Hermon Road in Hope Township. They were listed as dwelling 207, family 224. Abbie's parents were living in dwelling 204 and were family 221. Alvin Newman was a farmer. Although Abbie was a servant in the Newman's household, she did attend school during the 1909 through 1910 school term (1910 United States Federal Census, enumeration district 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12B, 4 May 1910). Abbie married Virgil R. Loller between 1910 and 1918. Virgil was born in March 1882 and died 18 September 1927. He was the son of Jefferson B. Loller and Emma C. Leida, and the grandson of John Loller and Ann Decker (Pam Fite, personal communication, 16 May 2002). Virgil's aunt Margaret Loller, was married to Ira C. Read. Ira was Abbie's father's first cousin. Virgil grew-up in Hope Township in Mount Hermon. In 1900, he lived with his parents in dwelling 58 in Mount Hermon. Abbie's family lived in dwelling 53. Jefferson Loller was a merchant. Virgil was the only one of the Loller's two surviving children who lived at home. He attended school during the census year (1900 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 189, sheet 3B, 6 June 1900). In 1920, Virgil and Abbie lived in Hope Township. The couple were renting a farm. The census indicates that Virgil was an employer, but none of his laborers were living with the family. Only one of the Loller daughters had been born. Roberta Loller was 2 years, 11 months old according to the census (1920 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 159, sheet 2B, 7-8 January 1920). She resided in Hope Township and was the head of household. Abbie rented a house on Mt Hermon Road in Mt Hermon. The census states that she did not own a radio. Her father, her sister Sadie, and her two daughters lived with her (1930 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-11, sheet 5A, 10 April 1930). Abbie remarried between 1930 and 1934. The obituary for Abbie's father listed "Mrs. Walter Storm" of Hope, not Mrs. Virgil Loller (Blairstown Press, 24 May 1934). In 1931, Dr. Walter Storm of Hope was the Warren County Home Physician (Mustin 1931). The Social Security Death index lists Abbie Storm of Oxford, Warren County, born 1893 and died 1882. Her name on her grave stone is given as Loller, not Storm. Virgil, Abbie and their daughter Dorothy are buried in Fairview Cemetery, Columbia, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Use photo album link to view a photo of their grave stone. Children of Abbie Read and Virgil Loller:
2837. (i.) ROBERTA LOLLER6, was born circa 1918 in New Jersey and died unknown. He lived with his parents in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 189, sheet 3A, 5 June 1900). He may be the John W. Read, who appears as a hired man on the 1910 United States Federal Census. That John Read was 15 years old and lived in the household of Amos E. Lanning and his wife Eliza J. Harden. The Lannings lived in Hope Township on Mount Hermon Road. In addition to John, the household consisted of Amos (age 48) and Eliza (age 41) Lanning, their two daughters, Anha (age 7) and Amy (age 4) Lanning, and Eliza's parents Alexnder (age 71) and Susanna (age 70) Harden. Amos Lanning was a farmer, so John was probably a farm laborer (1910 United States Federal Census, enumeration district 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12B, 4 May 1910). John lived in Riegelsville in 1934 when his father died (Blairstown Press, 24 May 1934).
725. (vii). HARRY C. READ5 was born 27 July 1897 and died July 1984 (Social Security Death Index). Harry married circa 1925, Ada C. Snyder, the daughter of George "Irvin" Snyder and Hannah M. Kinney. Ada was born 14 August 1902, in New Jersey and died in March 1985 (Social Security Death Index). In 1910, the Snyders lived in Hainesburg, Knowlton Township, on a farm on the road between Hainesburg and Delaware. Ada was 7 years old. Her family consisted of her father and mother, her brother Marshall K. Snyder who was 15, and her 67 year old grandmother, Mary C. Kinney. Mary Kinney was a nurse and had probably ministered to the community centered around Hainesburg for years (1910 United States Federal Census, enumeration district 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 27 April 1910). In 1930, Harry and Ada lived on a RD (rural delivery route) outside of Columbia, Knowlton Township, New Jersey. They were renting their home from Ada's parents. The Reads and the Snyders lived in dwelling 148. Irvin and Hannah Snyder were family number 153 and Harry and Ada were family 154. Irvin Snyder was a farmer, but Harry Read was a truck driver. According to the census, he was employed in 1930. Neither family owned a radio. The Snyder farm was valued at $4000, Harry and Ada's rent was $10. The Reads did not have children in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, enumeration district 2-13, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6A). In 1934, when Harry's father died, Harry and Ada were residing in Hainesburg, Knowlton Township (Blairstown Press, 24 May 1934). The paper also ran a little notice concerning the couple on 7 June 1934, in the "Hainesburg" column: "Miss Betty Snyder of Portland visited her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Read, recently." Betty Snyder was probably the daughter of Ada Read's brother Marshall Snyder. The Social Security death index gives Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey as Harry's residence when he died in 1984. His death was reported in the Blairstown Press, on 11 July 1984. Ada died the following year in March 1985. Her death was reported in the Blairstown Press, on 27 March 1985. The Social Security Death Index gives her residence as Columbia, Knowlton Township. 726. (viii). MARY (or MARIE) READ5 was born April 1900 and died unknown. The 1900 census gives her name as "Mary" (1900 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 189, sheet 3A, 5 June 1900) The 1910 census gives it as "Marie." She was living with her parents in 1910 and attending school (1910 United States Federal Census, enumeration district 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12B, 4 May 1910). She married on 3 December 1922, Philip S. Van Syckle, of Vail, New Jersey. He was the son of John L. and Lulu (Linaberry) VanSyckle. The wedding was performed by Rev. Powell of the Lower Harmony Methodist Church, Harmony, Warren County, New Jersey. The church records give her name as "Mae A. Read" of "Mt. Herman, New Jersey," the daughter of John C. and Amelia (Blaine) Read (Reuther n.d.). Philip was born circa 1901 in New Jersey and died unknown. In 1930, Philip and Mary lived on a rented farm in Blairstown Township. The family had a raido. Philip's mother Lulu lived next door with her second husband, Mahlon A. Vanauken (1930 United States Federal Census, enumeration district 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 14A, 21 April 1930). Philip and Mary lived in Vail in 1934 when Mary's father died (Blairstown Press, 24 May 1934). Mary's sister Sadie was also a resident of Vail when their father died, so it is possible that she was living with Mary in 1934. Children of Philp and Mary Van Syckle:
2839. (i.) VERNA M. VAN SYCKLE6, was born circa 1925 in New Jersey and died unknown. In 1930, Verna resided with her parents in Blairstown.
