BIOGRAPHIC NOTES:

Margaret Ann Kinney was the eldest of the thirteen children of Catherine Read and Isaac Snover Kinney. She was born 16 December 1834 in Warren County, New Jersey (Latter Day Saints, hereinafter LDS, Batch# 8514203; Newberry c1934). Margaret was probably named after her both of her grandmothers: Margaret Ann Snover Kinney and Margaret Ann Cooke Read. While her grandmother Read was known to the family as "Peggy", Margaret Ann Kinney was known as "Annie". In 1850, Annie lived with her parents on the farm of her grandfather Aaron Read in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. She was 16 years old and had not attended school during the census year. It appears that she was helping her mother care for her grandmother Peggy Cooke Read, who was ill with dropsey and needed constant care. The combined Kinney/Read household in 1850 was very large, numbering 13 individuals in all. Catherine Kinney needed her daughter at home to help her with the unending round of cooking, cleaning, washing and nursing. In addition, Catherine was probably expecting her ninth child (her daughter Rachel) at the time that the census was taken (1850 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 455). Between 1850 and 1855, the Kinneys moved off the Read farm and onto a farm of their own in Blairstown Township. Annie's Aunt Mary Read McMurtire returned to her parental home and cared for Peggy Read until her death in 1855. After 1855, Annie's Uncle Samuel C. Read and his family moved back to New Jersey from their farm in Pennsylvania and moved in with Aaron Read. Samuel's family remained with him until his death in 1861. They continued as the permanent residents on the Read farm after his death (Newberry c. 1934).

Annie Kinney married on 10 January 1857, John A. Vanscoten, son of Daniel Van Scoten and Sarah Titus (DiPetro 1998, Ruether n.d.b.). John was born 28 May 1832 and died in 1917 (Ruether n.d.a, n.d.b.). Daniel Van Scoten, or Vanscoten (born 16 January 1797) owned a tavern in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, New Jersey. He opened the tavern in 1822. In 1827, he was appointed post master of Walnut Valley by President John Quincy Adams. He was still running the tavern and was still Walnut Valley's post master in 1881 (Snell 1881:642). Daniel died on 8 November 1882 (Ruether n.d.a). According to Newberry (c. 1934), Daniel's son John also operated the tavern. However, the 1860 United States Census lists both Daniel and John as farmers. Daniel's real estate was valued at $8,000. He lived in dwelling 610. John did not own any real estate and had no personal estate value listed in the census. He and Margaret lived in dwelling 583. In dwelling 582 was the family of George and Mary L. Bachman. George Bachman was a hotel keeper, although he probably did not own the property (there is no real estate value in the census). Mary L. Bachman was Mary Louisa Vanscoten, Daniel's daughter and John's sister (Reuther n.d.b). It appears that George and Mary Louisa ran the tavern in at least 1860 (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, pages 571 and 575, 26 July 1860).

In the late 1860s or early in 1870, John and Annie left Walnut Valley temporarily and settled in a house in Hope Township, Warren County. They were living there in 1870 when the census was enumerated. John was employed as a laborer. The Kinneys had four living children in 1870: Sarah, David, Isaac and Mary Eliza (1870 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 177A, 4 August 1870). Two of their sons (George and Ulysses) had died as infants. John had a hired hand named Andrew P. Rice. Rice was a 71 year old native of New Jersey.

The family returned to Walnut Valley by 1880. According to the 1880 census, John was employed as a laborer. Five of the Vanscoten children were living with their parents: David, Isaac, Mary Eliza, Mattie and Celia. The eldest child, Sarah, had married in 1875. Sarah's husband was her second cousin once removed, Isaac Read Titman5 (Malinda Read4, Isaac Read III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) (LDS Batch# 8506520). He had also grown up in the Walnut Valley area. A Kinney relative by the name of Fritz M. Kinney lived in John and Annie's household. He was a 37 year old mechanic. At the time of the census, John and Annie lived in dwelling 149 and were family 163. John's father Daniel Van Scoten lived in dwelling 148 (family 162) (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 290D, 11 June 1880). The 1874 Beers County Atlas of Warren County New Jersey, (page 16) shows the D. Van Scoten and J. Van Scoten hotel and post office in the village of Walnut Valley (school district 74). A separate building marked D. Van Scoten is at the intersection of the main north/south road through the village and the main east/west road across the township (now New Jersey Highway Route 94). The hotel and post office were the same as one as that opened by Daniel Van Scoten in 1822. Although John is listed as a laborer in both the 1870 and 1880 censii, he was probably working in the family's tavern at least part-time by the mid-1870s. By 1887, John had taken over his father's job. The 1887 Warren County History and Directory (Weaver and Kern 1887) lists John A. Vanscoten as a mail carrier living in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township.

The 1880 census lists several family members living in close proximity to the Vanscotens. The Vanscotens, as stated earlier, were in dwelling 148. Sarah's brother Bartley Kinney and his family lived in dwelling 152 (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 290D, 11 June 1880). However, Bartley was not living there in 1874. The county atlas shows him in school district 72, near Union Brick cemetery (Beers 187:16). The family of William and Eleanor Ervine lived in dwelling 153. Their daughter Annie would marry the eldest Vanschoten son (David) in 1886 (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 290D, 11 June 1880). W.A. Ervine does appear on the 1874 atlas to the east of the village of Walnut Valley. A portion of the 1874 atlas map is included below. Table one shows the order of households visited in the 1880 census and what I think was the corresponding household on the 1874 Beers atlas map:

Two of the households on the 1880 census are different than those on the 1874 Beers atlas map. The first is #4, the households of E. Jones (1874) and Charles Jones(1880) . In 1880, Charles Jones was a 23 year old farmer who had become a father for the first time in October 1879. Charles Jones was probably a son or heir of E. Jones. At the very least he was a member of the same family group as E. Jones. He may have inherited the property, or purchased it from the estate. The second is #5, the households J. Gibbs (1874) and Bartley Kinney (1880). Bartley lived near Union Brick in 1874. He appears in the 1874 Beers Atlas as a property owner in school district 72, which was the Union Brick area. But, on the 1880 census he was a resident of Walnut Valley. It is very likely that Bartley Kinney bought, or was renting, the Gibbs place between 1874 and 1880. This will need to be verified through deed research.

John and Annie (Kinney) Vanscoten appear to have remained in Walnut Valley until their deaths. In 1900, they lived in Blairstown Township. John worked as a farm laborer. The couple shared their home with their widowed daughter Mary Eliza VAn Campen and her daughter Margaret, who was almost four years old. According to the census they had been married 43 years and were the parents of eight children, five of whom were living in 1900. These children were Sarah Titman, Orren and Kinney Van Scoten, Mary Eliza Van Campen and Mattie Van Kirk. The three deceased children were George, Ulysses and Celia Van Scoten (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, 20 June 1900, sheet 11B). John Vanscoten died in 1917. Margaret Ann Kinney Vanscoten lived until 1925 (Scott-Fritzen 1998), although the year 1926 is on her tombstone (Reuther n.d.a). They are buried a few miles to the east of Walnut Valley in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township (Reuther n.d.).
