READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

BARTLEY S. KINNEY4

354. BARTLEY S. KINNEY,4 (Catherine Read3, Aaron Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 30 April 1838 in New Jersey (LDS Batch# 8514203; Newberry c1934) and died 22 September 1907 in Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.). Scott-Fritzen (1998) gives 2 September 1908 as his death date. Bartley was the second son and third child of the thirteen children of Catherine Read and Isaac Snover Kinney. He appears to have been named after his uncle Bartley LaRue, the husband of Rachel Kinney. Rachel was a younger sister of Isaac Snover Kinney. In 1850, Bartley lived with his parents and his maternal grandparents. The farm where he lived belonged to his grandfather Aaron Read and was located in Blairstown Township, Warren County. Bartley was 12 years old at the time of the census and was attending school (1850 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 455). Bartley's family lived with his grandparents for several years. His grandmother Peggy Cooke Read was very ill and needed to be cared for. Between 1850 and 1855, the Kinneys moved off the Read farm and unto a farm of their own. The new farm was located in Blairstown Township. Bartley's parents and several of his siblings lived on the farm in 1860. Bartley did not live with his parents in 1860. He boarded on the farm of his uncle and aunt, Bartley and Rachel (Kinney) LaRue. Bartley Kinney was 22 years old and worked as a wage earning farm laborer on his uncle's farm in Pahaquarry Township, Warren County (DiPetro 1998a).

Bartley was married on 26 December 1865, in Warren County to Sarah Caroline Rice, the daughter of Dennis Rice and Charlotte Raub of Frelinghuysen Township (Berenger 1999; DiPetro 1998b; 1850 United States Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey). She was born 9 November 1841 and died 12 November 1919 (Reuther n.d.). Sarah's older sister, Emeline Rice, married Bartley's second cousin once removed, Aaron L. Luse5 (Issac Read Luse4, Elizabeth Read3, Issac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1). Her younger sister, Charlotte D. Rice, married Bartley's younger brother, Aaron R. Kinney.

In 1870, Bartley and Sarah lived on a farm in Blairstown Township. The couple had one child, their three year old daughter Martha (also known as "Mattie"). The farm belonged to Sarah Caroline's widowed father, 69 year old Dennis Rice. Sarah's sister Elizabeth Rice (age 36) also lived in the household. According to the census, she was "keeping house." The census gave Dennis and Bartley's occupations as "farmer." The Rice farm was valued at $3,600. Dennis Rice owned a personal estate valued at $500. There was no real estate value associated with Bartley Kinney in the census, so he probably did not own any land in 1870. He did own a personal estate valued at $200 (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 51, Columbia Post Office). By 1874, Bartley and Sarah had purchased a farm in school district 72 in Warren County. This district was centered around the Union Brick area. Dennis Rice's farm was located in school district 70 south of Walnut Valley and the Paulinskill (Beers 1874:16). A portion of the 1874 Beers County Atlas of Warren County New Jersey, which shows the location of Bartley and Sarah Caroline's farm is included at the end of the essay.

In 1880, Bartley and Sarah Caroline lived on their own farm in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township. Their daughter Mattie lived with them, as did Bartley's cousin, Rueben Kinney. Rueben was 14 years old and was working as a farm hand. The Kinneys lived in dwelling 152 and were family 166. Bartley's sister Margaret Kinney Vanscoten and her family lived nearby in dwelling 149 (family 163) (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey, page 290D). Sarah Caroline's father Dennis Rice was still living. However, in 1880 he lived with his daughter Charlotte Rice Kinney and her husband Aaron (one of Bartley's younger brothers) in Hope Township. Dennis Rice was 79 years old at the time of the census. The census states that he was blind. The census also lists him as "insane," which may mean that he suffered from dementia due to his advanced age. There was no catagory on the census for senility (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 199, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 424A).

The 1887 Warren County History and Directory (Weaver and Kern 1887) lists Bartley as a farmer residing in Blairstown Township, Post Office Blairstown. He and Sarah Caroline resided in Blairstown Township in 1900. They owned a farm in the township. According to the census, the couple were the parents of one chile (Mattie) who was still living in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 189, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 10B, 21 June 1900). Bartley and Sarah Caroline resided in Warren County until their deaths. Bartley's parents migrated to Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania in 1867 (Newberry c.1934). Several of Bartley's brothers and sisters followed his parents. These siblings included David, Aaron, Frederick, Samuel and Isaac Johnson Kinney, and Rachel Williams, Jane Giles and Almeda Saunders. Bartley and Sarah Caroline stayed in Warren County. As did Bartley's sisters: Margaret Vanscoten, Maria Messler and Sarah Linaberry. Bartley died in Warren County in 1907. Sarah Caroline lived until 1919. They are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.).
