AARON R. KINNEY4
356. AARON R. KINNEY,4 (Catherine Read Kinney3, Aaron Read2, Joseph Read1)
was born 30 January 1842 in New Jersey (Newberry c1934; Scott-Fritzen 1998; 1850 United States Federal Census, page 455) and died 4 January 1908 (Reuther n.d.; Scott-Fritzen 1998) probably in Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. He appears to have been named after his grandfather Aaron Read. Aaron's family resided with his Read grandparents in 1850. Aaron Read's farm was in Blairstown Township (1850 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 455). The Kinney's moved to their own farm in Blairstown Township sometime between 1850 and 1855 (Newberry c.1934). Aaron was not a resident of his parents household in 1860 (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey).Aaron married Charlotte B. Rice, on 5 January 1869 in Warren County (DiPetro 1998a). Charlotte was the daughter of Dennis Rice and Charlotte Raub of Frelinghuysen Township (Berenger 1999; 1850 United States Census). She was born in 1847 in New Jersey and died 1915, probably in Booklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Charlotte's elder sister, Emeline Rice, married Aaron's second cousin once removed, Aaron L. Luse5 (Issac Read Luse4, Elizabeth Read Luse3, Issac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1). Her next eldest sister, Sarah Caroline Rice, married Aarons's brother, Bartley S. Kinney.
Aaron may have migrated to Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania at approximately the same time as his parents (1867). He was definitely a resident of Susquehanna County after his marriage to Charlotte Rice. In 1870, Aaron and Charlotte Kinney lived in Brooklyn Township in Susquehanna County. Aaron was the head of the household. Charlotte's aunt Catherine Dennis lived with the couple as did Aaron's unmarried brother, Samuel C. Kinney (1870 United States Federal Census, Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, page 179, 12 August 1870). While Samuel stayed in Susquehanna County, Aaron and Charlotte returned to Warren County, New Jersey. They were back in New Jersey by September 1876, when their eldest son Jacob was born (Scott-Fritzen 1998). In 1880, Aaron and Charlotte resided in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Aaron was a farm laborer. Charlotte's father, Dennis Rice (age 79) and her Aunt Catherine Dennis (age 73) resided with the family. The census states that Dennis was a boarder and Catherine was a domestic servant. Aaron and Charlotte's two children also resided with them (1880 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 424A). Aaron is listed in the
Warren County History and Directory (Weaver and Kern 1887) as a farmer residing in Frelinghuysen Township, Post Office Marksboro. Aaron and Charlotte Kinney later resided in Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania (Scott Fritzen 1998).The Kinney's returned to Susquehanna County between 1887 and 1908. They were probably living in Brooklyn Township by the late 1890s when their daughter Ida married George Davidson, a resident of the Susquehanna County. After Aaron's death in 1908, Charlotte moved in with her daughter Ida Davidson. The Davidsons owned a farm in Brooklyn Township near Charlotte's nephews Fred and Lee Kinney (the children of her brother-in-law Frederick Marshall Kinney). Ida and George Davidson did not have children. Charlotte's only grandchild, Charlotte Elizabeth Kinney, lived with Charlotte's son Jacob in Nicholson, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 61, Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet 1B, 16 April 1910; 1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 184, Nicholson Borough, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, sheet 3A, 12 January 1920). Charlotte died in 1915. She was buried with Aaron in Union Cemetery, Susquehana County, Pennsylvania (DiPetro 1998b; Williams n.d.).
Aaron Kinney and Charlotte Rice were the parents of 2 children born between 1876 and 1878. They had one granchild who was born in 1906, 2 great-grandchildren born between 1930 and 1938, and 3 great-grandchldren. Total identified descendants equals 8.

893. (i). JACOB LESLIE KINNEY5, was born 14 September 1876 in New Jersey and died 11 June 1920 (Scott-Fritzen 1998; Williams n.d. gives the date of death as 11 July 1920), possibly in Nicholson, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. Jacob resided with his parents in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey in 1880 (1880 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 424A). His family resided near Marksboro, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey in 1887 (Weaver and Kern 1887). The Kinneys probably moved to Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania by the late 1890s. Jacob's sister Ida married George Davidson, a native of the county, in about 1897 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 61, Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet number 1B, 16 April 1910). Jacob married Phebe Almira Ward on 10 February 1904. She was the daughter of James Harvey Ward and Elizabeth Reynolds, both natives of Pennsylvania. Phebe was born 4 May 1882 in Pennsylvania and died 23 July 1967 (Scott Fritzen 1998; Williams gives date of birth as 4 March 1882). In 1920, Jacob and Phebe lived with their daughter Charlotte in a rented home in Nicholson, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. Jacob Kinney was an undertaker, he operated his own establishment. The 1920 census gives Jacob's full name as "Jacob Wesley Kinney"—not as "Jacob Leslie Kinney" as is given in the family records (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 184, Nicholson Borough, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, sheet 3A, 12 January 1920; Scott-Fritzen 1998). Jacob died at the age of 43, shorlty after the 1920 census was enumerated. After Jacob's death, Phebe married Harry Joseph Rought, the son of Joseph Rought and Mary Ann Werkheiser (Scott-Fritzen 1998). He was born circa 1877 in Pennsylvania. When the wedding took place is uncertain. In 1930, Harry J. Wrought lived with his older brother Arthur W. Rought (age 62) and his twin sister Carrie Rought (age 53). According to the the 1930 census, Harry was the head of the household. He was employed as a farmer. His brother Arthur was employed on the farm as a laborer. Carrier kept house for her brothers. Arthur was a widower and Carrie was single. According to the census, Harry was married. He married his first wife circa 1904, when he was 27. No wife is listed in the census. Whether Harry was still married to his first wife, or if the wife in the census was Phebe Ward Kinney, is unknown (1930 United States Census, Enumeration District 66-16, Nicholson Township, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, 8 May 1930). Jacob and Phebe Almira are buried in Union Cemetery, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Their names are inscribed on the tombstone as J. Leslie Kinney and P. Almira Ward, his wife (Williams n.d.). Child of Jacob L. Kinney and Phebe A. Ward:

Ida married in Pennsylvania circa 1897, George N. Davidson, the son of Martin V. Davidson (1837-1911) and M. Adelaide Ainey (1844-1927) (Williams n.d.). George was born 1871 in Pennsylvania and died 1960 (DiPetro 1998). In 1910, the couple lived on a rented frarm in Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.
