READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

SAMUEL A. KINNEY4

359. SAMUEL A. KINNEY,4 (Catherine Read Kinney3, Aaron Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 21 October 1848 in New Jersey (LDS Batch# 8514203; Newberry c1934; 1850 United States Federal Census, pg 455) and died 7 January 1931 in Nicholson, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania (Scott-Fritzen 1998). However, the 1930 census states that Ada Kinney, Samuel's wife, was a widow, hence the 1931 date may be in error (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 58-40, Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9A, 1 May 1930). In 1850, Samuel lived with his parents and numerous siblings on his grandfather Aaron Read's farm in Blairstown Township, Warren County New Jersey . He was 2 years old and was the youngest member of the Kinney/Read household in that year. (1850 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 455). In 1855, his grandmother, Peggy Cooke Read died. His family moved out of his grandfather's home and moved onto a farm of their own in Blairstown Township, possibly in Walnut Valley (Newberry c.1934). Samuel still resided with his parents in 1860, although by that time he was one of the older chldren living in the house. Five of his older brothers and sisters had already married or were living on their own (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey). In 1867, the Kinney family moved once again, this time to Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Samuel, who was about 19 years old at the time, went to Pennsylvania with his parents (Newberry c.1934). In 1870, he lived with his older brother Aaron R. Kinney in Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County. The census gives Aaron's occupation as farmer. Although Samuel was 21 years old at the time of the census, no occupation was listed for him (1870 United States Federal Census, Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, page 179, 12 August 1870).

Samuel married in the early 1870s, Ada A. Williams, the daughter of Henry Williams (born in Vermont) and Ruby Rich (born in Connecticut) (Scott-Fritzen 1998). She was born in 1854 in Pennsylvania and died in 1937 (DiPetro 1998). In 1880, Samuel and Ada resided with their daughter Stella in Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Samuel was a farmer. He and Ada lived in dwelling 283. Samuel's sister Rachel Williams, and her husband Harry, lived in dwelling 282 (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 138, Springville, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, page 418C, pages 19 & 20 June 1880). In 1910, Samuel and Ada Kinney resided in Brooklyn Township with their youngest son Floyd. Their daughters Stella and Lena were married by 1910, as was their son Albert. The three married children had all established households of their own (1910 Pennsylvania Miracode Index, Enumeration District 87, visit 24). In 1920, Samuel and Anna rented a farm in Brooklyn Township (1920 United States Federal Census, Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet 3B, 13 January 1920). Scott-Fritzen (1998) gives Samuel's death date as 7 January 1931 in Nicholson, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. However, Ada appears as a widow on the 1930 census. She resided with her daughter Lena in Springville Township, Susquehanna County (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 58-40, Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9A, 1 May 1930). Ada died in 1937. She and Samuel are buried in Union Cemetery, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania (DiPetro 1998).

Samuel Kinney and Ada Williams were the parents of 5 children born between 1875 and 1896. They had at least 10 grandchildren born between 1893 and 1925, 20 great-grandchildren, 37 second great-grandchildren, 38 third great-grandchildren and 5 fourth great-grandchildren. Total identified descendants equals 115.

CHILDREN OF SAMUEL A. KINNEY AND ADA WILLIAMS:

1612. (i.) ESTELLA RUBY "STELLA" KINNEY5, was born 18 July 1875 and died 1954 (Scott-Fritzen 1998; Williams n.d.). She married on 10 November 1892, Andrew Grant Mack, the son of Edwin Palmer Mack (23 June 1829 - 11 February 1908) and Sarah Quick (born 14 September 1836). He was born 13 October 1862 (Scott-Fritzen 1998) in Pennsylvania and died 1932 (Williams n.d.).

1613. (ii.) ALBERT KINNEY5, was born circa 1881 in Pennsylvania and died unknown.

1614. (iii.) LENA KINNEY5, born circa 1891 in Pennsylvania and died unknown (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 58-40, Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9A, 1 May 1930). Lena married circa 1910, Bruce Squire. He was born circa 1887 in Pennsylvania and died unknown. In 1910, Lena and Bruce resided in Susquehanna County. Bruce's brother Porter P. Squire (age 27) resided with the couple (1910 Pennsylvania Miracode Index, Enumeration District 87, visit 218). Their son, Clifton J. Squire was born in Pennsylvania in about 1918. In 1920, Bruce and Lena still lived in Springville Township. They owned their farm free and clear of mortgages. Bruce worked as a dairy farmer. The Squire's farm was dwelling 37. Bruce's brother Porter and his wife Ruth lived in dwelling 36. Bela Garrison lived in dwelling 38. Bela would marry Bruce and Lena's neice Louise Mack in about 1922 (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 92, Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheets 2A & 2B, 5 & 6 January 1920). Bruce and Lena evidently resided in New York for a period of time in the early 1920s as their daughter Irene was born there circa 1924. The Garrison's son Douglas was born in New York in 1923. It is possible that the two families tried their hand at farming over the border in New York. By 1930, Bruce and Lena resided on their own dairy farm in Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. The couple's two children lived with them as did Lena's widowed mother Ada Kinney. Claude J. Bus (age 21) lodged with the family and worked as a laborer on their dairy farm. Bruce's brother Porter Squire resided near the family. Bruce and Lena resided in dwelling 218, while Porter and his family resided in dwelling 218. By 1930, Porter and his wife Ruth had three children: Marie M. (age 13), Sara A. (age 13) and Vernon L. (age 15 months). Porter was a dairy farmer like his brothe Bruce (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 58-40, Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheets 8B and 9A, 29 April and 1 May 1930). Children of Lena Kinney and Bruce Squire:

He lived with his parents on their dairy farm in Springville Township in 1920 (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 92, Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheets 2A, 5 January 1920). His family appears to have lived in New York state during the mid-1920s, as Clifton's sister Irene was born there in 1924. By 1930 his family was back on their dairy farm in Springville Township, Pennsylvania. Clifton atttended school during the 1930 census year (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 58-40, Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9A, 1 May 1930).

890. (ii.) R. IRENE SQUIRE6, was born circa 1923 in New York and died unknown. Her parents returned to their native Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania by 1930. She attended school during the 1930 census year (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 58-40, Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9A, 1 May 1930).

In 1930, Floyd and Reva had been married 13 years and had two children. Floyd was a farmer. The family owned a farm in Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 58-6, Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet 5A, 12 April 2003).
