In a letter to me dated 4 March 2003, Melody wrote:

"Ruth is the woman on the far right with Watson seated next to her. I'm not sure who the rest of the people are. I assume they are mostly Reads. Perhaps the older man and the woman standing in the back row were Ruth's parents???"...Do you think the other women are Ruth's sisters??

Ruth and Watson married before Ruth turned 19 in February 1879. The two young women in the picture (to Watson's left and directly in front of he and Ruth) may be Watson's sister and Ruth's aunt Mary Jane Reed (Johnson's youngest sister). Mary Jane died 10 April 1879, shortly before her 28th birthday. The older couple behind Watson and Ruth may be Johnson and Almira Reed. The young man behind them may be Watson's brother Finley. The young child on the left edge of the picture may be one of Ruth's sisters. Lizzie was 17 years old in early 1879, this child is still in short dresses so it may have been Clara or Maggie (who were around 15 and 13 respectively and would not have been in long dresses yet).
