AMANDA VAUGHN THOMPSON3

37. AMANDA VAUGHN3 (Hannah Read Ogden Vaughn2, Joseph Read1), was born 22 February 1809, in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 26 March, 1888, in Millport, New York. She married Ananias C. Thompson. He was born 29 April 1802 in Salem, Westchester County, New York and died 20 January 1890 in Chadron, Dawes County, Nebraska (Kern 1938). In 1850, Ananias and Amanda lived on a farm in the Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York. Their three children lived with them. Ananias was a farmer. He owned real estate valued at $4300 (1850 United States Federal Census, Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York, page 387, 30 July 1850). The 1865 New York State Census lists Ananias and Amanda Thompson as residents of the Town of Catherine, Schuyler County, New York. Their son William resided with them. In 1870, Ananias and Amanda lived in the Town of Montour, Schuyler County. Their post office was Catherine, New York. Ananias was a farmer. The farm was valued at $5,850. The family had a personal estate valued at $1,830. Hannah Elizabeth Mead and her daughter Ivah E. Mead lived with the couple. Hannah was 35 and Ivah was 15. Hannah owned real estate valued at $1,000. Hannah may have been Ananias and Amanda's youngest daughter (1870 United States Federal Census, Town of Montour, Schuyler County, New York, page 579, 28 July 1870). In 1880, Ananias and Amanda resided in the village of Millport, Town of Veteran, Chemung County, New York. Ananias's occupation was given as "retired farmer." According to the census he was disabled because he was "rhuematic." Amanda was keeping house, no disabilities were listed for her in the census (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 88, Millport Village, Town of Veteran, Chemung County, New York, page 598D, 25 June 1880). Amanda died in 1888 and was buried in Hector Union Cemetery, Town of Hector, Schuyler County, New York. After Amanda died, Ananias appears to have gone to Nebraska to live with his daughter Phebe Shelton. He died there in 1890. There is a stone for Ananias in Hector Union Cemetery. Whether his body was brought back to New York for burial, or if the stone in New York is simply a memorial stone is unknown (Schuyler County GenWeb-cemetery transcript).
