READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS
This view of the interior of an historic house in Mystic Seaport, Mystic, Connecticut contains several of the items listed in Isaac's inventory. The inventory includes 22 chairs. On the line before the chairs is an entry for a cupboard and contents. It is possible that Isaac's cupboard was a corner cupboard. His best china and tea ware would have been on public display in this cupboard. The inventory also mentions two looking glasses. These were fairly commonplace items in middle class homes by the late 1830s. A looking glass or mirror is hung on the wall of this home in Mystic. The inventory also includes a listing for a dining table and a small table. The smaller table sometimes served as a sideboard. One of each of these items also appears in the Mystic house. Isaac's inventory does not include a desk or a quilting frame, both of which are in the photograph (the quilting frame is just visible on the left edge of the photo). His inventory also includes curtains, but whether these were window curtains or bed curtains is impossible to tell from the inventory. Photograph by Esther Doyle Read, November 2002.
