Sadiron, or solid iron. Wash tubs and wash boards are to the left of the ironing area. These artifacts date to the French and Indian War Era. However, the steps and material culture items involved in washing, drying and ironing clothing had not changed significantly by the time that Isaac Read, Sr. died in 1838. This display is located in the barracks, Fort Frederick State Park, Big Pool, Washington County, Maryland. Photograph by Esther Doyle Read, 12 July 2003.
