FORTY FORT CEMETERY

Forty Fort Cemetery is located at the intersection of Wyoming Avenue and River Street in Forty Fort, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. This is not a complete transcription of inscriptions. Instead it represents selected stones transcribed on 3 November 2001 by Esther Doyle Read. There are 18 stones included in this transcription, representing 22 individuals. The cemetery is still active.

Allen, Emma A., 1859 - 1925. Single stone. Emma was a daughter of Ira K. Read and Elizabeth Howell. Her husband was Williard F. Allen. He may be buried in the Binghampton, New York area. Emma is buried in the same plot with her son Ira W. Allen and his wife Clara; her parents; her sister Sarah Read Bachman, Sarah's son Arthur Bachman and grandson Harold Bachman, Sr. and Harold's wife Edith. The Read/Allen/Bachman plot is near the old Methodist Meeting House (on the south side).

Allen, Ira W., 1884 - 1940; Clara S., 1880 - no date cut. Single stone. Ira was the son of Williard F. Allen and Emma A. Read. He may be buried in the Binghampton, New York area. Ira and Clara are buried in the same plot with Ira's mother Emma Read Allen; his aunt Sarah Read Bachman, Sarah's son Arthur Bachman, her grandson Harold Bachman, Sr. and Harold's wife Edith. and Ira's grandparents Ira K. and Elizabeth (Howell) Read. The Read/Allen/Bachman plot is near the old Methodist Meeting House (on the south side). Their graves are next to the fence. According to the social security death index, Clara died in Binghampton, New York in 1975.

Bachman, A.R., Dec. 31, 1881 - Oct 23, 1917, Father. Single stone. A.R. Bachman was Arthur R. Bachman, the son of Henry Bachman and Sarah Read. His wife was Margaret., she does not appear to be buried with Arthur. Arthur is buried in the same plot with his mother Sarah (Read) Bachman; his grandparents Ira K. and Elizabeth (Howell) Read; his aunt Emma A. (Read) Allen and Emma's son Ira W. Allen and his wife Clara; As well as his own son Harold J. Bachman, Sr. The Read/Allen/Bachman plot is near the old Methodist Meeting House (on the south side).

Bachman, Harold J., Sr., 1908 - 1969; Edith A. 1907 - 1993. Single stone. Harold was the son of Arthur and Margaret Bachman. Edith was his wife. They are buried in the same plot with his father Arthur Bachman; his grandmother Sarah (Read) Bachman; his great-grandparents Ira K. and Elizabeth (Howell) Read; his great-aunt Emma A. (Read) Allen and Emma's son Ira W. Allen and his wife Clara. The Read/Allen/Bachman plot is near the old Methodist Meeting House (on the south side).

Bachman, Sarah Read, April 20, 1853 - November 9, 1930. Single stone. Sarah Read Bachman was the daughter of Ira K. Read and Elizabeth Howell. Her husband was Henry Bachman, ,he does not appear to be buried with Sarah. Sarah is buried in the same plot with her parents; her son Arthur Bachman; her grandson Harold J. Bachman, Sr. and his wife Edith; her sister Emma A. Read Allen and Emma's son Ira W. Allen and his wife Clara. The Read/Allen/Bachman plot is near the old Methodist Meeting House (on the south side). Sarah's grave is next to the fence.

Howell, Elizabeth, see Ira K. Read. Maiden name is not given on the grave stone.

Jenkins, obelisk with family name, surrounded by 3 smaller stones. The Jenkins plot is located on the south side of the old Methodist Meeting House adjacent to the Read/Allen/Bachman plot.

Jenkins, Catherine, 1842 - 1923, Mother.
Jenkins, Victoria, 1868 - 1909, Sister.
Scott, Ann B., 1876 - 1955, Sister.

Read, Emma A., see Emma A. Allen. Maiden name is not given on the grave stone.

Read, Ira K., Died June 11, 1890, aged 61 years; his wife Elizabeth H. Read, Born 1831, Died 1912. Obelisk inscribed on one side. Ira K. Read was a son of Richard Read and Rebecca Howell. His wife was Elizabeth Howell, his second cousin once removed. She was a daughter of Philip S. Howell and Margaret Vought. They were both born in Warren County, New Jersey and came to the Wilkes-Barre area in 1858. They are buried in the same plot with two of their daughters—Emma A. Read Allen and Sarah Read Bachman—as well as Emma's son Ira W. Allen and his wife Clara; and Sarah's son Arthur Bachman, her grandson Harold J. Bachman, Sr. and Harold's wife Edith. The Read/Allen/Bachman plot is near the old Methodist Meeting House (on the south side).

Reed, large stone with family name, surrounded by 10 smaller stones. A Veterans of Foreign Wars flag is set with the large family stone. The Reed plot is located on the east side of the old Methodist Meeting House.
