READ and MATTHEWS
FAMILY CONNECTIONS

ISAAC READ, III3

42. ISAAC READ III3 (John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 1 May 1798 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey; died 4 August 1865 in Warren County, New Jersey. He married (M7.) CATHERINE MATTHEWS3 (John Matthews2, Unknown Matthews1) on 31 July 1819. She was the daughter of John Matthews and Elizabeth Fonger (daughter of Philip Fonger). According to Kern (1938) Catherine was born 23 December 1799 in New Jersey, although the age on the tombstone gives the date as 21 December 1800. She died on 22 March 1877. Catherine's father died in Hainesburg, Knowlton Township, Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey in about 1799. She and her only sibling, Euphemia Matthews Smith (2 March 1796 - 20 February 1885) lived with their mother until her death in about 1810. Euphemia was married to Isaac Smith by February 1812, when their first son, John was born. Catherine may have lived with her sister and brother-in-law until her marriage to Issac Read in 1819.

Isaac and Catherine set up housekeeping in Knowlton Township. Isaac served as a Freeholder for the Township in 1833 with Philip I. Snyder (Snell 1881:626). Issac was probably a Jacksonian Democrat. He named one of his sons Andrew Jackson Read. He appears on the 1840 United States Federal Census for Warren County, New Jersey as a resident of Knowlton Township (page 368). Their household consisted of a male between 40 and 50 years of age (Isaac III, age 42) and a female between 40 and 50 years of age (Catherine, age 41), one male between 20 and 30 years (John Matthews Read, age 20), two females between 15 and 20 years (Elizabeth Ann, age 19 and Caroline, age 17), one female between 10 and 15 years (Malinda, age 14 or Ruzilla, age 13 or Margaret, age 11), two females 5 to 10 years of age (Harriet, age 9 and Hulda, age 7), one male 5 to 10 years of age (Isaac, age 5) and one male under 5 (Marhsall, age 2). Two of their sons had died in the last three years. Andrew died as an infant in 1837 and Orin died as an infant in the spring of 1840.

Isaac and Catherine appear on the 1850 United States Federal Census for Warren County, New Jersey as residents of Blairstown Township (page 442), which had recently been created from Knowlton Township. They owned a farm valued at $10,000. Four of their 14 children had already married: John Read, Elizabeth Read Smith, Caroline Read Shaw, and Malinda Read Titman. Eight of the children were living in the household: Ruzilla, Margaret, Harriet, Hulda, Isaac, Marshall, Catherine, and William. The 1860 United States Federal Census for Warren County, New Jersey, again lists them as residents of Blairstown Township (page 700). Their farm was still valued at $10,000 and they owned a personal estate valued at $7,000. They had three of their children living with them in 1860: Marshall, Catherine and William. The five older children listed in the 1850 census had all married by 1860. Catherine appears on the 1870 United States Federal Census for Warren County, New Jersey as a resident of Blairstown Township (page 14). She was a widow. The census gives her occupation as both housekeeper and farmer. Her farm was valued at $10,000 and she owned a personal estate valued at $1,000. Only one of her children, William, was still living at home.

Catherine was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown. Several of her children and their spouses were also members of the church. These included John and Barbara Raad, Eliza and Charles Smith, Malinda Titman, George Pullis (husband of Harriet) and Lucy Read (wife of Marshall) (Anon 1916).

Isaac Read and Catherine Matthews had 14 children born betweeen 1820 and 1843. They had at least 51 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildern; 27 second great-grandchildren; 27 third great-grandchildren; 44 fourth great-grandchildren; 28 fifth great-granchildren (the most recent birth in 1996); and 5 sixth great-granchildren. Total identified descendants equals 245 over a 176 year period (1820-1996).
