468. JAMES "MARSHALL" GIBBS5 (Phebe Ann Luse4, Elizabeth Read3, Isaac, Sr.2, Joseph1), was born 28 March 1844, in Warren County, New Jersey and died 5 July 1923 (Allen 2001; Armstrong 1979:350; St Johns Cemetery). He is listed in the 1860 census as "Marshall Gibbs." He resided with his parents in Hope and attended school that year (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 2). Marshall married Margaret Elizabeth Kispaugh on 22 January 1870. She was the daughter of James B. Kispaugh and Sarah A. Flummerfelt. Margaret was born 6 July 1848 near Mt. Vernon, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, died 13 March 1926 (Allen 2001; Armstrong 1979:350; St Johns Cemetery). James and Margaret made their home in Hope Township, Warren County. Although they were married in early 1870, the 1870 census makes no mention of the wedding date. James and Margaret lived on a farm valued at $15,000 and owned a personal estate valued at $2,125. They had three servants in 1870: two farm laborers and a domestic servant. The farm laboreres were 20 year old Ogden Winters and 14 year old Daniel McTier. The domestic servant was 20 year old Ann Drenfield (1870 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 175B, 3 August 1870, Belvidere Post Office). In 1880, they still on a farm in Hope Township. Other members of the household included their two children and Lydia Hetzel. According to the census Lydia was the couple's aunt. She was born circa 1821 in New Jersey and was employed as a domestic servant (1880 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 422A). James and Margaret were still residents of Hope Township in 1900. Their daughter Ada had married, but their three sons were still single and living at home. Bertha Burge (born circa 1881 in New Jersey) worked for the family as a live-in domestic servant. James and his son Milton wre both engaged in farm work. The family owned their farm free and clear of mortgages (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 189, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 2B, 3 June 1900). In 1910, James and Margaret Gibbs lived on a farm on the Delaware Road in Hope Township. They owned their farm free and clear of any mortgages. Their widowed daughter, Ada Cooke and their youngest son, Floyd Gibbs lived with them. They also had a live-in hired hand named Davis Nori, who was born in New Mexico in circa 1894. Davis could neither read nor write, but in 1909 and 1910 he did attend school. Also living in the house was the "hired lady", Julina Sebring, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1885 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 14A). The 1920 United States Census indicates that the composition of the Gibbs household had changed only slightly. The Gibbs house was a single dwelling with two families living under the same roof. The house was dwelling number 14. In the house was family number 14, headed by the Gibb's youngest son Floyd. The family included Floyd's wife and daughter and a hired man. Family number 15 was headed by 75 years old James M. Gibbs and included his wife Margaret (age 71) and his widowed daughter, Ada Cook (age 49). Julina Sebring (age 35) was still the family's domestic. James Marshall and his son Floyd were both farmers (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 159, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 3 January 1920). James Marshall Gibbs died 3 years later in July 1923. Margaret died in March 1926. They were buried in St Johns of Hope Church Yard, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Several of their children were later buried in the same family plot. The stones were field checked 10 June 2000.
