Hannah Read was Jacob Coursen's second wife. His first wife was Elizabeth Moot. They married on 20 October 1810 and had at least two children—Nancy (who died as an infant) and Elsey Maria Coursen Van Camp (born 1818)—before Elizabeth Moot Coursen died. Jacob married Hannah Read on 13 March 1831, a little over a month before their first child, Andrew Jackson Coursen, was born. The couple had four more children during their marriage: Isaac Marshall Coursen (1834); Nancy Coursen Sharp (1837); Emily Elizabeth Coursen Burtt (1841); and Jacob Harvey Coursen (1846).
This panel is on the right (or south) side of the monument (photograph is oriented to the north). This side of the monument is for Jacob L. Coursen, who died 13 March 1848 of consumption (tuberculosis). Jacob was born 1778 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and was the son of Isaac Coursen and Ann Case. His death left Hannah a widow with five children under the age of 17; the youngest child, J. Harvey Coursen was about 2 years of age when his father died.
