RACHEL ANN GIBBS HILDEBRANT5

471. RACHEL ANN GIBBS 5 (Phebe Ann Luse4, Elizabeth Read,3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1), was born 22 October 1850,in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch Number: #C509811; 1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 194, Belvidere Village, Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 2 June 1900—census includes full date of birth; LDS Batch #C509811) and died 1926 (Sekkes 2005). In 1860, when the census was enumerated, Rachel was 9 years old and lived at home with her parents and five siblings—Elizabeth, Marshall, Margaret, Aaron and Israel. Rachel attended school with her older siblings and her younger brother Aaron. The Gibbs family lived on a farm in Hope Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3 of township, 26 June 1860, Post office Serepta).

Rachel married circa 1869, John H. Hildebrant, a nephew of her sister Elizabeth's husband, Jehiel T. Hildebrant (Armstrong 1979:350). John was the son of Conrad G. Hildebrant and Caroline Flumerfelt of Hope Township. He was born 7 February 1845 in Warren County, New Jersey (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 194, Belvidere Village, Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 2 June 1900—census includes full date of birth; Sekkes 2005). The couple initially made their home in Hope Township. In 1870, they owned real estate valued at $7,560 and a personal estate valued at $1,635. John's brother George Hildebrant (age 23) lived with the couple and worked as a farm laborer until his marriage to Maria in January 1870 (1870 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 179, 5 August 1870, post office Belvidere; Sekkes 2005).

John and Rachel's son, Aaron Luse Hildebrant was born the year after the census. In 1880, John and Rachel lived in Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their household included their son and two live-in servants. One was Jacob Smith. He was born circa 1858 in Pennsylvania and appears to have been a farm hand on the Hildebrant farm. The other was Dell Garrison. He was born circa 1862 in New Jersey. His occupation was given as servant in the census (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 203, First Election District, Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 509C, 9 June 1880). The Hildebrants were still in Oxford Township in 1900. According to the census they lived in the village of Bridgeville. John was a farmer. They owned their farm free and clear of all mortgages. The Hildebrant's son was not a member of the hosuehold in 1900. Instead, they had two boarders who worked for them. The first was Charles Allen, who was born 3 June 1877 in New Jersey. He was employed as a farm hand. The Hildebrants also had a domestic servant name Anna Banghart, who was born 23 November 1886. According to the census, Rachel was the mother of one child, who was still living in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 194, Bridgeville Village, Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 2 June 1900—census includes full date of birth). The 1910 census places John and Rachel in the Belvidere vicinity. The census again states that Rachel was the mother of one child and that child was still living in 1910. John was still a farmer in 1910. He had two live-in farm hands 19 year old Jessie Treski and 12 year old Robert Doyle. In the margin next to each boy's name is written "Indian." Jessie was from North Carolina and Robert was from Montana (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 136, Belvidere Vicinity, Oxford First District, Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 8B, 29 April 1910).

By 1920, John and Rachel lived on a farm near the village of Buttsville in White Township, Warren County, New Jersey. They owned their farm free and clear of mortgages. Unlike previous census years they did not have hired hands living with them (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 105, Buttsville Village, White Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6A, 28 & 29 January 1920). Rachel died in 1926 and John died the following year, they are buried together in Belvidere Cemetery, Belvidere, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.; Sekkes 2005).

Rachel Ann Gibbs and John H. Hildebrant had 1 child who was born 1871, at least 5 grandchildren born between 1897 and 1908, and 2 great-grandchildren born between 1923 and 1926 . Total identified descendants equals 8.
