READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

Dr. AARON LUSE GIBBS 5

472. Dr. AARON LUSE GIBBS 5 (Phebe Ann Luse4, Elizabeth Read,3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1), was born 28 October 1852 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 26 October 1888. Aaron's birth is listed in the township records, but no name is given, only his sex and date of birth (LDS Batch #C509811; Swayze Cemetery). In 1860, Aaron was 8 years old and lived at home with his parents and his five siblings: Elizabeth, Marshall, Margaret, Rachel and Israel. Aaron attended school with his older siblings. The Gibbs family lived on a farm in Hope Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3 of township, 26 June 1860, Post office Serepta). Aaron still lived at home in 1870. He was 18 years old and he worked as a farm laborer. The census does not indicate that he attended school. Only two of his siblings still lied at home: Phebe Margaret and Israel (1870 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 177, 4 August 1870, post office Belvidere).

Between 1870 and 1880, Aaron became a doctor. He set up practice in the town of Hope. In 1880, he boarded with Lydia Howell in Hope. The census lists his occupation as druggist, not as a physican, although Armstrong (1979:350) and Snell (1881:660, 662) both give his occupation as physician and druggist. He owned Gibb's Drug Store in Hope. J.C. Stone also boarded with Lydia Howell. Stone was a clerk in the drug store (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 199, Village of Hope, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 420A, 12 June 1880).

Aaron married between in either 1880 or 1881, Jessie Mina Brands, the daughter of Abraham Angle Brands and Mary Huffam Kirkhuff. She was born 1862 in New Jersey and died in 1933. Jessie and her sister Ada were quite a bit younger than their three older sisters: Sarah Catherine, Mary Ellen and Rachel Ann (wife of William Addis). These three women were 17, 13, and 11 respectively when Jessie was born. Jessie also had a younger sister named Adacorene, who was 7 years her junior. Mary Brands would have been 46 or 47 when Ada was born. If Jessie and Ada were Mary's children she had them rather late in life. Jessie and Ada appear as residents of the household of Abraham and Mary Brands on both the 1870 and 1880 census. They are identifeid as the daughters of Abraham and Mary on the 1880 census. Abraham was a well-to-do farmer in Knowlton Township. The 1870 census states that he held real estate valued at $40,200 and a personal estate valued at $24,400. Jessie grew up with her older sisters and with her mother's sister-in-law Sarah A. Kirkhuff. Sarah was the widow of Mary's brother Anthony Kirkhuff. The Kirkhuff farm was located next to the Brands farm on the 1870 census. Sarah moved into the Brands household after 1870. Another individual living in the house in 1870 and 1880 was Robert Cummins. Cummins was 44 in 1870 and was described by both the censii as "idiotic." He could neither read nor write. No occupation is ever given for him in the census (1870 United States Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, pages 227-228, 16 June 1870, post office Columbia; 1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 201, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 444C, 2 & 3 June 1880).

Sarah Kirkhuff was the mother of Anthony Johnson Kirkhuff. Johnson, as he was known, was the husband of Kate Read (or Catherine). Both Anthony and Kate (Read) Kirkhuff were Jessie's first cousins. Kate Read's mother was Hannah Brands, an older sister of Abraham Brands. Kate Read was also one of Aaron's cousins. She and Aaron's mother were second cousins. Both Kate and Aaron were descendants of Joseph Read and Sarah Sutton. Aaron's line of descent was as follows: Joseph Read1, Issac Read, Sr.2, Elizabeth Read3, Phebe Ann Luse4, Aaron Gibbs4. Kate's line of descent was: Joseph Read1, Samuel Read2, Aaron Read3, Kate Read4. Although Aaron and Jessie had many cousins in common, they were not blood relatives (as far as I know).

Aaron and Jessie were married for about 7 or 8 years before Aaron died in 1888. Armstrong (1979:350) states that Aaron and Jessie did not have children. However, a baby is buried next to Aaron in Swayze Cemetery who may be their child. This child's grave stone is the same style as that of Aaron. The baby's name was Bessie Gibbs and she was born 23 July 1882. She lived for almost three months and died 16 October 1882. Aaron died six years later on 26 October 1888, two days before his 36th birthday. The Blairstown Press ran a short announcement concerning his memorial service (which took place on 18 November 1888) on 21 November 1888. The announcement appeared under "Hope Happenings":

The memorial service at public funeral service of the late Dr. A.L. Gibbs was held on Sunday in the M.E. Church. The house was crowded and the sermon by Pastor Bowman and Remarks by Rev. J.D. Hall were well timed and suitable.

Aaron is buried in Swayze Cemetery, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. His stone was field checked 3 July 2001 and is inscribed:

Aaron L. Gibbs M.D.
Oct. 28 1852
Oct. 26 1888

Jessie remarried after Aaron's death. The name of her second husband is unknown. She died in 1933, but was not buried with Aaron.

Aaron Luse Gibbs and Jessie Minia Brands probably had 1 child who was born and died in 1882. Total identified descendants equals 1.
