READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS
ISRAEL R. GIBBS5
473. ISRAEL R. GIBBS5 (Phebe Ann Luse4, Elizabeth Read,3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1), was born 19 November 1857, probably in Warren County, New Jersey and died 27 August 1920 (Armstrong 1979:350; St. Johns Cemetery). Israel first appears on the United States census in 1860. He was 2 years old and lived at home with his parents and his older siblings: Elizabeth, Marshall, Margaret, Rachel and Aaron. The Gibbs family lived on a farm in Hope Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3 of township, 26 June 1860, Post office Serepta). Israel still lived at home in 1870. He was 12 years old and he worked as a farm laborer. The census does not indicate that he attended school. Only two of his siblings still lied at home: Phebe Margaret and Aaron (1870 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 177, 4 August 1870, post office Belvidere).
Israel married Sarah Idena Moore, the daughter of Stephen Moore. She was born 3 August 1859 and died 27 November 1909 (Armstrong 1979:350; St. Johns Cemetery). In 1870, Sarah lived with her widower father and three of her siblings—William (age 14), Amanda E. (age 12) and Rhoda J. (age 8)—in Hope Township. Sarah's family lived in dwelling 93 and Israel's family lived in dwelling 133 (1870 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 174, 28 July 1870, post office Belvidere). After Israel and Sarah married, they continued to live in Hope Township. They appear in the 1880 census as residents of the township. The census gives Israel's occupation as farmer. The couple had one child, a five month old daughter named Nora (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 199, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 417D, 10 June 1880).
The 1900 census lists the family, however the lines with information concerning Israel and Sarah are completely illegible. All of the couple's eight surviving children lived at home in 1900. These children were Nora (age 20), Sarah (age 19), Raymond (age 15), Lila (age 13), Blanche (age 9), Chester (age 7), Goldie (age 5, who is incorrectly identified as a son) and Rhoda (age 1) (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 189, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheets 1B - 2A, 1 June 1900). A son who was born on 28 August 1889 had lived for 11 days. He died on 9 September and was buried in the Swayze Family Burial Ground, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.).
Sarah Moore Gibbs died in 1909. The 1910 census lists Israel as a widower. He lived on a farm on the Bridgeville Road in Hope Township, Warren County. Four of his children were living with him: Lila, Chester, Goldie and Rhoda. The family did not own the farm, they were renting it (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 15A). Israel died nine years later on 27 August 1920. He was buried with Sarah in St Johns of Hope Church Yard (a.k.a. Old Moravian), Hope, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their daughter Lila is also buried with them. The grouping of stones in the cemetery consists of a large stone with the the family name "Gibbs" and smaller individual head stones. The stones were field checked 10 June 2000:

Raymond's sister Lila also lived in the household and was probably keeping house for her brother and nephew. Raymond also had a boarder, 46 year old Johas Searisson who was a native of Norway. Johas worked on the farm as a laborer. The census indicates that Raymond was married in 1920, even though Jennie's death had occurred before the begiining of the 1920 census year (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 161, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9A, 19 & 20 January 1920). Raymond's son by Jennie, 18 year old Charles Gibbs, also lived with the family (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-34, Washington Borough, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9A, 9 April 1930).
