After the death of his father, Alfred was raised by his grandparents, Amos and Martha (Kirkpatrick) Williams. He changed his name to Alfred L. Williams. After the Civil War, Alfred worked as a carpenter. In 1870, he became a fireman with the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1873, he went to work for the CH&D Railroad as an engineer. He worked for the CH&D until his retirement in 1900. After 1800, Alfred and his half brother, John Laney Shawver, went into business together. They designed and constructed barns in Logan County, Ohio. Alfred married Allie Myers, they resided in Lima, Ohio. Children of Alfred Williams and Allie Myers:
