ELIZABETH KIRKPATRICK PATTERSON Carlisle3
50. ELIZABETH KIRKPATRICK3 (Phebe Read2, Joseph1) was born in Sussex County, New Jersey on 2 May 1796 and died in Guernsey County on 21 March 1876. Elizabeth was nine or ten years old when her family migrated to Ohio. In 1814, when she was almost 18 years old, both her parents died. Elizabeth was married in the same year to William Patterson, the son of Daniel and Hannah Patterson. He was born circa 1792 and died by 1819. William's sister Hannah Patterson, married Elizabeth's brother, John Kirkpatrick. William and Elizabeth had two children before William's death at a young age.
After William's death, which occured some time between circa 1816 and 1819, Elizabeth married second, on 25 November 1819, John Carlisle. He was the son of John Carlisle and Mary Sunderland. John was born 1787 and died 6 August 1841. The Carlisles stayed in Guernsey County, Ohio. In 1820, they resided in Madision Township in the county. John and Elizabeth had been married less than a year when the 1820 census was taken. They did not yet have children of their own. However, Elizabeth's daughter Azuba Patterson lived with them, as did a male between the age of 16 and 26 years (1820 United States Federal Census, Madison Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 192). Who he was is a mystery. It is possible that he was David Kirkpatrick, one of Elizabeth's orphaned brothers. David was 17 years old in 1820. It is probable that Elizabeth's other brothers - John (age 22), Amos (age 15) and Joseph (age 11) Kirkpatrick - were living with their sister Azubah Kirkpatrick Wheeler in Highland Township, Muskingham County, Ohio (1820 United States Federal Census, Highland Township, Muskingham County, Ohio, page 192). None of the brothers were living with their sister Martha Kirkpatrick Williams (1820 United States Federal Census, Wells Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 181). Absent from the list of individuals living in John and Elizabeth Carlisle's household was a male between the ages of 0 and 10. Elizabeth's son, Andrew Patterson would have been 5 in 1820, his absence from the household in 1820 may imply that he was dead. The Carlisle household in 1820 was composed as follows:

A John Carlisle appears three times on the Guernsey County Tax list for 1825 (www.usgennet.org/~ohguerns/list2.html; www.usgennet.org/~ohguerns/list3.html). However, it is unclear from the transcript I viewed which John Carlisle in the list is the one who is the subject of this essay. The Carlisle famiy is listed the 1830 United States Federal Census for Gurernsey County as residents of Wills Township (1830 United States Federal Census, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 423). They had moved to Wills from Madison Township sometime between 1820 and 1830. The couple had had several children between 1830 and 1840. Elizabeth's daughter, Azuba "Zeeba" Patterson was not a resident of the household in 1830. She would have been about 14 years old. Whether she had married Samuel Davis by this time is not known. The Carlisle household in 1830 consisted of:

The unknown female between the age of 5 and 10 appears to be a daughter of John and Elizabeth Carlisle. There is approximately 16 and a half months between the births of Rebecca and Mary Ann, and 31 and half months between the births of Mary Ann and Phebe. The unknown female was born by 1825, Phebe was born in 1826. I suspect that the unknown daughter was born in the in the interval between Mary Ann and Phebe. This would place her birth in late 1824 or early 1825. The child died before 1840, she does not appear on the 1840 United States Federal Census (1840 United States Federal Census, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 311). By 1840, the Carlisles had added three more children to the household. Their daughter Rebecca had married Isaac Morton. Elizabeth's daughter Zeeba Patterson was also married and had at least one son. Zeeba's son, John Davis, was born the same year as Zeeba's half brother, Joseph Carlisle. The Carlisles were still residents of Wills Township. Their household in 1840 was composed of:

The male between 30 and 40 years of age was not Elizabeth Carlisle's son, Andrew Patterson. Andrew was born in 1815. He probably died by 1820 (see discussion above). However, if he was alive in 1840 he would have been 25 years old and does not fit the description of the individual in the census. It is possible that his individual was a hired hand who boarded with the family
John Carlisle died the year after the census was taken, on 6 August 1841. Elizabeth was once again a widow. However, she now had at least 6 children living at home, who ranged in age from 17 years to 13 months. The 1850 census places Elizabeth and five of her chilldren in Elizabethtown, Ohio which was located in Wills Township. John Carlisle's estate appears to have been divided among his heirs. Each of the children (Phebe, Joh, Elizabeth, and Hannah Margaret) owned real estae valued at $3,000. Presumably Rebecca Carlisle Morton had also received a similar portion of real estate. The youngest son, Joseph Carlisle, died in 1849. Three of the Carlisle children attended school in 1850, John, Elizabeth and Margaret (as named in the census). According to the census, their mother could neither read nor write. The family also had a boarder, or live-in hired hand. His name was John Bucy. His occupation was listed as farmer. John Carlisle's occupation was also listed as farmer (1850 United States Federal Census, Elizabethtown, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 235R, 12 September 1850). The Carlisle household in 1850 consisted of:

Most of the surviving Carlisle children were married by the mid-1850s. Hannah Margaret was married after the civil war. Only Mary Ann Carlisle did not marry. She may have made her home with her mother. However, I currently have no documentation for this type of living arrangement. Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Patterson Carlisle died in Guernsey County on 21 March 1876.

CHILDREN OF ELIZABETH KIRKPATRICK AND ANDREW PATTERSON:
Data from the Latter Day Saints files and Kathryn Ellis.
269. (i.) ANDREW PATTERSON4, was born circa 1815 in Ohio and possibly died before 1820. He does not appear as a resident of the household of John Carlisle, second husband of his mother, Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Patterson Carlisle, in the 1820 census (1820 United States Federal Census, Madison Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 192). Nor is he mentioned in the 1825 will of his grandfather Daniel Patterson. His sister "Zeeba" is named as the daughter and heir at law of Daniel's son William Patterson (Guernsey County Probate Court, Will Book B, page 128). It is probable that Andrew Patterson was dead before 1820.
270. (ii.) AZUBA "ZEEBA" PATTERSON4, was born circa 1816 probably in Guernsey County, Ohio and died unknown. In 1820, she lived with her mother and step-father in Madison Township, Gurnsey County, Ohio (1820 United States Federal Census, Madison Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 192). Azuba was named as "Zeeba Patterson" in the will of her grandfather, Daniel Patterson. Daniel died between 25 April 1815 (when his will was written) and 17 May 1825 (when his will was admitted for probate). In his will Daniel states: "Item I give & bequeath unto my Grand daughter Zeeba Patterson daughter & heir at law of my son William Patterson six head of sheep to be delivered to her so soon as she shall arrive to the age of eighteen years" (Guernsey County Probate Court, Will Book B, page 128). Zeeba, or Azuba, Patterson married around the time that she received her sheep from her grandfather's estate. She married Samuel Davis. They had at least one child. Son of Azuba Patterson and Samuel Davis:
1023. (a.) JOHN C. DAVIS5, was born circa 1836 and died unknown. He married Julia Harrison.

271. (iii.) REBECCA ANNE Carlisle4, was born 6 April 1821 in either Madison or Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio and died 6 December 1876, in Ohio. She appears as a resident of her parents household on the 1830 (1830 United States Federal Census, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 423). Rebecca married Isaac Morton in circa 1840.
272. (iv.) MARY ANN Carlisle4, was born 23 October 1823 in either Madsion or Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio and died 28 August 1893, in Ohio. She appears as a resident of her parents household on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 United States Federal Census. In 1850, she possessed real estate valued at $3,000 in her own right. This was probably her share of her late father's estate (1830 United States Federal Census, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 423; 1840 United States Federal Census, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 311; 1850 United States Federal Census, Elizabethtown, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 235R, 12 September 1850). Mary Ann appears to have never married.
273. (v.) PHEBE Carlisle4, was born 1 July 1826, in either Madison or Wills Township, Guernsey County and died 11 April 1906, in Ohio. Phebe married on 13 November 1852, Dr. John Thomas Clark. He was born 21 May 1822.
274. (vi.) JOHN Carlisle4, was born 23 July 1829 in either Madison or Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, probably in and died 1904. He appears as a resident of his parents household on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 United States Federal Census. In 1850, he possessed real estate valued at $3,000. This was probably his share of his late father's estate. The 1850 census gives John's occupation as farmer. It also indicated that he attended school during the year (1830 United States Federal Census, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 423; 1840 United States Federal Census, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 311; 1850 United States Federal Census, Elizabethtown, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 235R, 12 September 1850). John married Eliza Barton after 1850.
275. (vii.) ELIZABETH Carlisle4, was born 29 January 1831 in Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio and died 11 February 1911 in Guernsey County, Ohio. She appears as a resident of her parents household on the 1840 and 1850 United States Federal Census. In 1850, she possessed real estate valued at $3,000 in her own right. This was probably her share of her late father's estate. According to the census, Elizabeth attended school in 1850 (1840 United States Federal Census, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 311; 1850 United States Federal Census, Elizabethtown, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 235R, 12 September 1850). Elizabeth married Henry Marshall McCraken, on 7 January 1852 in Guernsey County, Ohio.
276. (viii.) JOSEPH READ Carlisle4, was born 3 August 1836 in Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio and died 1849 in Guernsey County, Ohio (probably in Wills Township. He appears as a resident of his parents household on the 1840 United States Federal Census (1840 United States Federal Census, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 311).
277. (ix.) HANNAH MARGARET Carlisle4, was born 3 June 1840 in Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio and died 3 March 1904. She appears as a resident of her parents household on the 1840 and 1850 United States Federal Census. In 1850, she possessed real estate valued at $3,000 in her own right. This was probably her share of her late father's estate. The 1850 census gives her name as Margaret. It also states that she attended school during the census year (1840 United States Federal Census, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 311; 1850 United States Federal Census, Elizabethtown, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 235R, 12 September 1850). Margaret married Major James Watkins Moore, on 17 August 1865.
271. REBECCA ANNE Carlisle4 (Elizabeth Kirkpatrick3, Phebe Read2, Joseph1), was born 6 April 1821 in Guernsey County, Ohio and died 6 December 1876, in Ohio. She married Isaac Morton in circa 1840. Isaac was born circa 1810, in Pennsylvania. The young couple appear on the 1840 census as residents of Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio. They did not have any children in 1840 and were the only two individuals living in the household (1840 United States Federal Census, WillsTownship, Guernsey County, Ohio, page 307):

By 1850, three of the five Morton children had been born. Isaac and Rebecca had moved from Wills township to the town of Cambridge, Ohio which was located in Cambridge township, Guernsey County. The Mortons owned real estate valued at $5,000. Isaac's occupation was listed as "speculator". Whether this means that he was a land speculator or dealt in futures is unclear from the census (1850 United States Federal Census, Cambridge, Cambridge Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, 18 September 1850). The Morton household in 1850 was comprised of:

The list of individuals in table 6 is presented as they appeared in the census. The second daughter, Laura Morton, is the same age as the Clara Morton given in the list of children in the next section. Clara A. Morton is listed in the Latter Day Saints Files as the second daughter of Isaac and Rebecca. She was born in 1845, which would put her age at 4 or 5. The census clearly gives the second daughter's name as Laura. The name of this daughter needs to be verified.

She never married.
631. (iii.) JOHN C. MORTON5, was born 26 June 1850, in either Wills or Cambridge Township, Guernsey County, Ohio and died 30 December 1905. In 1850, John lived with his parents in Cambridge, Ohio (1850 United States Federal Census, Cambridge, Cambridge Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, 18 September 1850).

273. PHEBE CARLISLE4 (Elizabeth Kirkpatrick3, Phebe Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 1 July 1826, in Ohio and died 11 April 1906, in Ohio. She married on 13 November 1852, Dr. John Thomas Clark. He was born 21 May 1822, in Maryland (both of his parents were natives of Maryland) and died unknown. In 1860, John and Phebe lived in Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio. Their post office was Middlebourne, Ohio. The census gave John's occupation as "doctor and farmer." The Clark's owned land valued at $6,000 and had a personal estate valued at $2,000. They had one child, a six year old daughter named Mary Elizabeth. The family also had a farm hand named Charles McMullen. He was a 20 year old native of Ohio (1860 United States Federal Census, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, 20 June 1860, page 43A-43B). The 1870 census gives John's occupation as "Physican." The family owned real estate valued at $20,400 and a personal estate valued at $4,000. Their post office was still Middlebourne, Ohio. The couple's 16 year old daughter, Mary Elizabeth, resided with them (1870 United States Federal Census, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, 2 July 1870, page 646A). The family dynamics were still the same in 1880. John was listed as a "Doctor." Mary Elizabeth was still single and lived at home. And phebe was listed as "keeping house." What is different is that the census gives the doctor's name as "Thomas." Phebe gave her father's birthplace as Pennsylvania and her mother's as New York—the latter is incorrect (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 82, Wills Township, Guernsey County, Ohio, 15 June 1880, page 310A).
