READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

ANDREW HANKINSON KONKLE5 and ACHSAH ANN LUSE5

537. ANDREW HANKINSON KONKLE5 (Isaac R. Konkle4, Mary Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 25 August 1844 in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died in 1926. He appears on the 1850 and 1860 census as a resident of his parents household. According to the 1860 census he worked on the family's farm and he attended school (1850 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 494B, 9 August 1850; 1860 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 560B, 16 July 1860). The school Andrew was attending in 1860 was the Blair Prebyterial Academy (now Blair Academy), he was a student there between 1859 and 1862. The academy was (and still is) located in Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. According to Academy records, his home address at the time of his attendence was Waterville (Anon 1898).

In 1865, at the age of 21, Andrew became a surveyor in Hardwick Township. He was also employed as a school teacher. Andrew married, on 22 March 1866, his third cousin (512) ACHSAH ANN LUSE,5 (Mary Ann Kerr4, Phebe Read3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1) (Fretz 1908) the daughter of Aaron Luse and (146) Mary Ann Kerr4. Achsah was born 13 June 1841, in Warren County, New Jersey and died 31 March 1901 (Johnsonburg Christain Church Cemetery). Achsah's sister, (510) Emily M. Luse5, married Andrew's uncle, (220) John R. Konkle4. The 1870 census lists Andrew and Achsah as residents of Hardwick. They were listed adjacent to Andrew's parents. The census gives their personal estate value as $500. No value was given for real estate which probably means that they were renting their home, possibly form Andrew's parents (1870 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 148B, 2 August 1870).

Andrew's occupation in the census was given as surveyor. He continued to work in Hardwick Township as a surveyor until 1872. In that year, he relocated to Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey, where he worked as a surveyor and a civil engineer (Fretz 1908). Andrew served as the Newton Town collector during the period 1876 through 1878 (Snell 1881:261). A year after the couple moved to Newton, on 22 September 1873, there was a large fire in the downtown area that destroyed about five buildings. The town organized a fire department known as the Kittaninny Hose Company. In 1881, Andrew served as the clerk of the company (Snell 1881:261, 280-183). The 1880 census places Andrew and Achsah in Newton. They are listed adjacent to Andrew's uncle John Konkle who was married to Achsah's sister Emily. The census gives Andrew's occupation as surveyor (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Newton Village, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 117D, 3 June 1880). When they lived in Warren County, Achsah and Andrew were members of the Christian Church in Johnsonburg, Frelinghuysen Township (Fretz 1908). They appear to have kept at least their association with the Christain Church after their removal to Newton. When Achsah died in March of 1901, she was buried in the Johnsonburg church's cemetery (Christian Church Cemetery).

A year after her death, Andrew married as his second wife Mary E. DePue, they were married on 26 June 1902. Mary was much younger than Andrew. She was born circa 1871, while Andrew was born in 1844. Mary was 31 years old when they were married, Andrew was 57. Mary's parents were John S. DePue and Mary Stoll, they were natives of New Jersey (Fretz 1908; 1930 United States Federal Census, Newton Town, Sussex County, New Jersey, enumeration district 19-19, sheet 4A). In 1910, Andrew and Mary lived in Newton. They owned their home. Andrew was employed as a civil emgineer (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 177, Newton Borough, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, (no day) April 1910) Andrew died in 1926. Mary appears on the 1930 census as a resident of Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey. She was a 58 year old widow and worked as a book keeper in a doctor's office. Mary owned her home, which was valued at $1,400. According to the census she did not own a radio (1930 United States Federal Census, Newton Town, Sussex County, New Jersey, enumeration district 19-19, sheet 4A). Andrew did not have children by either marriage (Fretz 1908). Achsah's tombstone was field checked July 1997, it is inscribed:

Achsah A. Luse wife of Andrew J. Konkle Born May 13 1841; Died March 31, 1901
