SARAH IRENE KONKLE HILL5
540. SARAH "IRENE" KONKLE5 (Isaac R. Konkle4, Mary Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 21 June 1855 in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Fretz 1908) and died between 1920 and 1930 (1920 United States Federal Census, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Upper Easton District, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, enumeration district 135, sheet 5B, 16-18 January 1920; 1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 48-67, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9B, 1 May 1930). Fretz (1908) gives her name as Irene. Sarah Irene appears on the 1860 and 1870 census as a resident of her parents household. According to the 1870 census she attended school (1860 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 560B, 16 July 1860; 1870 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 148B, 2 August 1870). Although her brother attended Blair Academy, Sarah Irene did not. She is not listed among the Blair students in an 1898 reunion booklet. Her brother Andrew is listed among the students (Anon 1898).
Sarah Irene married James M. Hill on the 4th of July in 1877. He was born 2 June 1846 and died 4 September 1905, at the age of 59. James is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Fritz 1908; Ruether n.d., her transcript gives the year of death as 1904). The 1880 census places the Hills in Hardwick Township, a few houses from Sarah Irene's parents. Isaac and Sarah Konkle lived in dwelling 43, while James and Sarah Hill lived in dwelling 48. The census gives James's occupaton as laborer (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 197, Hardwick Township,Warren County, New Jersey, pages 388D-389A) The 1887 Warren County History and Directory lists James Hill, as a farmer living in Hardwick Township, post office Blairstown (1887 Weaver and Kern).
By 1900, the hills had moved to a rented farm in Oxford Township, Warren County. James and Irene (as given in the census) shared their home with their son Orin, their daughter Myrtie Shipps and her husband Eugene, and their infant granddaughter Irene Shipps. Their daughters Sadie and Rose had moved out of the house by the time the census was enumerated. James and Orin Hill and Eugene Shipps worked the farm together. According to the census, Irene was the mother of four children, all olf whom were living in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration district 194, sheet 9B, 13 June 1900). In 1920, Sarah lived with her daughter Myrtie in Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Upper Easton District, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (1920 United States Federal Census, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Upper Easton District, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Enumeration district 135, sheet 5B, 16-18 January 1920).
James and Sarah Hill were the parents of 4 children, who were born between 1878 and 1884. They had at least 4 grandchildren who born between 1898 and 1921 and at least 3 great-grandchildren who were born between 1923 and 1927. Total identified descendants equals 11.
CHILDREN OF SARAH IRENE KONKLE and JAMES M. HILL:
1183. (i.) SADIE F. HILL6, was born 29 January 1878 probably in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown (Fretz 1908). She is listed as a 2 year old child on the 1880 census (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 197, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, pages 388D-389A). In 1908, she resided at 717 Wood Street in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (Fretz 1908). In 1900, Sadie and her younger sister Rosie worked for the Blair Presbyterial Academy (now Blai Academy) as servants. They are listed in the 1900 census as working and boarding at the school. The census indicates that both sisters were out of work three months out of the year (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blair Presbyterial Academy, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 2A, 1 June 1900). Rosie married Fred Mattock in 1905 and 1910, she and Fred had moved across the Delaware River to 473 Bushkill Street in Easton, Pennsylvania. The Mattocks were renting their home and Sadie was a boarder in the house. She was still single and worked as a picker in a silk mill (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 74, 4th Election District, Easton City, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet number 15B, 24 April 1910).
1184. (ii.) MYRTLE "Myrtie" MAY HILL6, was born 22 June 1879 probably in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died January 1971 (Fretz 1908; Social Security Death Index). She is listed as an 11 month old infant on the 1880 census (1880 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 4 of Hardwick Township, page 389 left of the census). The Social Security Death Index lists four addresses under death residences: Easton, Forks Township, Palmer Township, and Williams Township all in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. She married circa 1898, Eugene Shipps. He was born 22 October 1875 in New Jersey and died after 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 48-67, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9B, 1 May 1930). In 1900, Irene and Eugene lived with Irene's parents and younger brother Orin in Oxford Township, Warren County. They had one child, their infant daughter Irene. Eugene worked the farm with his father-in-law and brother-inlaw (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration district 194, Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9B, 13 June 1900). Irene's father died in 1905. As the family was renting the Oxford Township farm it is doubtful that they remained there after his death. By 1908, the Shipps resided in Martin's Creek, Pennsylvania (Fretz 1908). The 1910 census places them on a farm near the village of Martin's Creek. The couple were renting the farm. They had three children, all under the age of 12. Eugene's borther Clarence C. Shipps lived with the family and worked as a farm laborer. He was 26 years old and single (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 96, Lower Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet number 16B, 5 May 1910). The 1920 census lists the Shipps family as residents of Lower Mount Bethel Township in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Eugene was a farmer. The Shipps rented their farm. The family consisted of Eugene and Myrtie, their children Roy and Sadie, and Myrtie's mother, Sarah Irene Konkle Hill (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 135, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Upper Easton District, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 5B, 16-18 January 1920). By 1930, all of Myrtie and Eugene's children had moved outof the house. They lived together on their farm with their 6 year old granddaughter Grace Shipps (who may be the daughter of their son Roy). They were still renting their farm. Eugene farmed it on a half share (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 48-67, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9B, 1 May 1930). Myrtie was living in Northampton County when she died in 1971 (Social Security Death Index). Children of Myrtie Hill and Eugene Shipps:
1483. (i.) IRENE M. SHIPPS7, was born 13 March 1899, in New Jersey probably in Oxford Township, Warren County and died unknown. She was the only one of the Shipps children who was born in New Jersey (1900 United States Federal Census, Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration district 194, sheet 9B, 13 June 1900). When the 1900 census was enumerated, she lived in Oxford Township with her parents, Hill grandparents and Uncle Orin Hill on her grandparents's farm. She was less than a year old when the census was enumerated. In 1910, she lived with her parents, her siblings and her uncle Clarence Shipps on her parent's farm near the village of Martin's Creek, Pennsylvania. Irene was in school (Fretz 1908; 1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 96, Lower Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet number 16B, 5 May 1910). She is not listed as a member of her parent's household in 1920 (United States Federal Census, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Upper Easton District, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, enumeration district 135, sheet 5B, 16-18 January 1920).
1484. (ii.) ROY SHIPPS7, was born circa 1902 in Pennsylvania and died unknown. In 1910, he lived with his parents, his siblings and his uncle Clarence Shipps on the family farm near the village of Martin's Creek, Pennsylvania. Roy was in school (Fretz 1908; 1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 96, Lower Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet number 16B, 5 May 1910). He resided with his parents in 1920 and worked as a farmer. He and his father probably worked the family's farm together. Roy did not attend school during the 1919-1920 school year. It appears that he had completed his formal education by the age of 16 (United States Federal Census, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Upper Easton District, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, enumeration district 135, sheet 5B, 16-18 January 1920). Roy married circa 1923, Hazel (Last Name Unknown). She was born circa 1902 in Pennsylvania. The couple lived on a farm near Martins Creek, Pennsylvania in 1930. They owned their farm, which was valued at $2,500. They also owned a radio. The couple's two sons, Lawrence and Eugene lived with them (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 48-67, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 8A, 29 April 1930). They may be the parents of Grace Shipps, who was living with Roy's parents in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 48-67, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9B, 1 May 1930). Children of Roy and Hazel Shipps:
3020. (i.) ? GRACE SHIPPS8, was born circa 1923 in Pennsylvania. In 1930, she lived with her paternal grandparents, Eugene and Myrtie Shipps, on their farm near Martins Creek, Pennsylvania. The census gives her age as 6 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 48-67, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9B, 1 May 1930).
3021. (ii.) LAWRENCE SHIPPS8, was born circa 1925 in Pennsylvania. In 1930, he lived with his parents on their farm near Martins Creek, Pennsylvania. The census gives his age as 4 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 48-67, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 8A, 29 April 1930).
3022. (iii.) EUGENE SHIPPS8, was born circa 1927 in Pennsylvania. In 1930, he lived with his parents on their farm near Martins Creek, Pennsylvania. The census gives his age as 2 years and 7 months (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 48-67, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 8A, 29 April 1930).
2278. (iii.) SADIE SHIPPS7, was born circa 1908 in Pennsylvania and died unknown. She appears on the 1910 census as an 18 month old child living with her parents on their farm near the village of Martin's Creek, Pennsylvania. Roy was in school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 96, Lower Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet number 16B, 5 May 1910). In 1920, she lived at home with her parents and attended school (United States Federal Census, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Upper Easton District, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, enumeration district 135, sheet 5B, 16-18 January 1920). She is not listed in the Fretz (1908) volume, hence she was probably born right around the time that it was published.
1185. (iii.) ROSA B. "Rosie" HILL6, was born 16 October 1881, probably in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown (Fritz 1908). In 1900, Rosie and her older sister Sadie worked for the Blair Presbyterial Academy (now Blai Academy) as servants. Rosie married in about 1905, Fred Mattock, who was a carpenter. He was born May 1881 in New Jersey. Fred was a resident of Blairstown Township in 1900. He rented a house next to Wilbur Hill (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 9 June 1900). In 1908, Fred and Rosa lived in Hampton Junction, Hunterdon County, New Jersey (Fretz 1908). They had moved to 473 Bushkill Street in Easton, Pennsylvania by 1910. Rosie's sister Sadie boarded with the couple. The couple were renting their home. Fred was employed as a carpenter in a shop (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 74, 4th Election District, Easton City, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet number 15B, 24 April 1910).
1186. (iv.) ORRIN KONKLE HILL6, was born 23 December 1884, probably in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 14 October 1973 in Multnomeh County, Oregon (Fretz 1908; Oregon Death Index, Certificate Number 73-16640; Social Security Death Index). Orin resided at home with his parents in 1900. The family lived in Oxford Township, Warren County on a rented farm. Orin worked the farm with his father and brother-in-law, Eugene Shipps. His sister Irene Shipps and her infant daugher also lived with the family. He did not attend school during the census year (1900 United States Federal Census, Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration district 194, sheet 9B, 13 June 1900). By 1908, Orin resided at 621 E Street in Washington, D.C. and worked as a construction worker on electric machinery (Fretz 1908). Orrin married in about 1909, Marie Jane (Last Name Unknown). She was born 22 July 1887 in Virginia and died 12 June 1982 in Multnomeh County, Oregon (Oregon Death Index, Certificate Number 82-10270). Her father was a Virginian and her mother was from New Jersey. It is likely the couple meet while Orrin was living in Washington, D.C. They immediately moved to Brooklyn, New York, where Orrin worked as an electrical contractor. The 1910 census shows them as a newly wed couple. They lived in an apartment building in Brooklyn. Marie was not employed outside the home (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 551, 22nd Ward, Borough of Brooklyn, New York City, Kings County, New York, sheet 10B, 25 April 1910). By 1930, Orrin and Marie had settled in Portland, Multnomeh County, Oregon. They had adopted a daughter whom they named Marie. Marie's father was Russian and her mother was a native of Missouri. She was born in Oregon in about 1921. The family lived in their own home at 466 East 18th Street in Portland. The house was valued at $15,000. The family also owned a radio. Orrin worked in a box factory (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 26-390, Election Precinct 338, Portland City, Multnomeh County, Oregon, sheet 4A, 4 April 1930). According to the Social Security Death Index, Orrin's Social Security number was issued in Oregon before 1951. His death residence is given as Portland, Oregon. Orin's first cousin once removed, John Edward Loderick 7 (grandson of his Aunt Mary Konkle Loderick), also lived in Portland. Child of Orrin and Marie Hill:
3278. (i.) MARIE J. HILL7, was born circa 1921 in Oregon and died unknown. She was the adopted daughter of Orrin K. and Marie Jane Hill. Her biological father was a native of Russia and her biological mother was a native of Missouri. In 1930, she lived with her adopted parents as 466 East 18th Street in Portland, Multnomeh County, Oregon and attended school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 26-390, Election Precinct 338, Portland City, Multnomeh County, Oregon, sheet 4A, 4 April 1930).
