John Thorpe Harden, father of Mary Cevillah Harden Read. He was married to Martha Wilson, the daughter of Walter Wilson and Lanah Titman. My Aunt Ethel Evans, who was the daughter of Mary C. Harden and Jacob Read, once told me that she liked to go visit her grandmother Harden because "she was little like me". My Aunt Ethel was a tiny woman, probably no taller than 5 feet two inches, but she made up for her lack of physical stature with plenty of spunk.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        

Collection of Esther Doyle Read. The charcoal drawing was given to me by Beverly Shantz Brown. Her mother, Natalie Read Shantz was the granddaughter of Mary C. (Harden) Read.

 

Jacob Read (1847 - 1926) and Elias J. Mackey (1844 - 1920). As far as I know, Jacob and Elias were not related by blood, they may simply have been close friends. The labeling on the back of the photograph (to the right) does not make it clear which man is Jacob and which is Elias. If anyone has any idea which man is which, please get in touch with me. Jacob eventually moved away from Warren County and settled in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Elias stayed in Warren County. He served in the New Jersey State House of Assembly from Warren County during the period 1876 to 1878. Elias is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey.

 

Sandy Read and Tim Doyle both believe that Jacob is the individual on the left. Tim has pointed out that the listing of names top to bottom could be analogous to left to right.
