GEORGE A. TITMAN5
558. GEORGE A. TITMAN5 (Malinda Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born on Christmas in the year 1849 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1 May 1923 (LDS Batch #C509751: Social Security Death Index). George grew up on his parents farm near Walnut Valley in Blairstown Township (1850 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 443; 1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 569; 1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 41B; Beer 1874). George married in 1878, Diana Beck, the daughter of John L. Beck and Hannah Maria "Anna" Ervine. Diana's Aunt Barbara Beck, was married to George's Uncle John Matthews Read4. Diana was born 20 January 1858 and died 18 March 1913. The couple's two eldest children, the twins Anna and John, were born 17 April 1880. At the time of the 1880 census, Diana and the twins who were unnamed infants in the census) were living with her parents and her brother Jacob B. Beck, in Knowlton Township, Warren County. George was living with his parents in Blairstown. It is very possible that Diana chose to do her lying-in at home so that her mother could help her through her first birth. George's father was not well in 1880. According to the census, Baltis Titman was bedridden or crippled. Baltis died in January 1882. George may have returned to his childhood home to help his father and mother. Four of the Titman children (other than George) were still at home in 1880. There were three daughters, Celia (age 18), Marilla (age 10) and Zilla (age 10); and one son, Brackley (age 16) (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 290C; Enumeration District 201, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 455B). George and Diana had one more child, their daughter Linnie, who was born in 1888. In 1900, the couple lived on their own farm in Blairstown Township with their three children (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 11B, June 1900). The 1910 census places the family in Blairstown on Mountain Road leading toward Walnut Valley. By that year, the twins had both married and started families of their own. George and Diana's daughter Linnie was the only child living at home. She was 21, single and worked as a stenographer in a office. According to the census, George was retired and lived off his saving. The census describes his real estate holdings as a house, not a farm. According to the census, Diana was the mother of three children, all of whom were living in 1910 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 123, Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 16B, 10 May 1910). The family were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Walnut Valley during at least the first two decades of the twentieth century and probably earlier (Burd 1916). Diana Beck Titman died in 1913. By 1920, George lived with his widowed daughter Anna Waldron in Blairstown Township. George was a laborer who worked on other people's farms as a wage earner. He was 70 years old (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 8A, 28 January 1920). George died in May 1923 and was buried with Diana in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their family plot includes stones for their three children and several of their sons and daughter in laws, several of their grandchildren and their spouses and Lillian Hutchinson, half sister of their daughter-in-law Sarah C. Titman. The graves were field checked on 3 July 1999 and again on 25 March 2004. Transcriptions of the stones are included below:

George Titman and Diana Beck had 3 children who were born betweeen 1880 and 1888 and 9 grandchildren born between 1905 and 1928. They had at least 6 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Total identified descendants equals 22.

In 1880, Anna and her twin appeared on the census as unnamed infants. They were one month old (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 201, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 455B). Their mother was staying with her parents at the time of the census. Their father was residing with his parents. Diana Beck was probably lying-in at her parents so her mother could help her with the twins. Anna and John were her first birth. In 1900, Anna was single and still resided at home with her parents and siblings (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 11B, June 1900). Anna married twice. She married circa 1901 (at age 21), Henry Waldron. He was born 8 February 1878 and died 20 April 1911. Henry is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.). By 1920, Anna had returned to her father's home to care for him, both of her children and her mother had died. Anna's father worked as a wage earning laborer on a local farm (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 8A, 28 January 1920; Lorenz n.d.). Anna M. Waldron was a member of the Walnut Valley Methodist Episcopal Church in 1916 (Burd 1916). She married her second husband, between 1920 and 1930. He was George M. Hoagland. George was born circa 1865 in New Jersey. In 1930, George and Anna owned a farm in Blairstown Township. They are listed on the 1930 census adjacent to the household of Elmer and Linnie (Jones) Walker (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 4-21, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12A, 17 April 1930; Lorenz n.d.). Linnie Jones Walker6 (Celia Titman Jones5, Malinda Read Titman4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was Anna's first cousin. Anna was buried in the Titman plot in Cedar Ridge Cemetery. Their mother was staying with her parents at the time of the census. Their father was residing with his parents. Diana Beck was probably lying-in at her parents so her mother could help her with the twins. Anna and John were her first birth. In 1900, John was single and still resided at home with his parents and siblings (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 11B, June 1900). He married between 1900 and 1906, Sarah Catherine Pearson. She was born 25 February 1883 in Pennsylvania and died 13 February 1971. In 1910, John and Sarah lived with their children—Lillian and Nelson—on a farm inside the limits of the town of Blairstown. John was a farmer. The family owned their farm free and clear of mortages. Sarah's widowed sister, Lillian Hutchinson lived with the family. Lillian was born 11 December 1860 in Pennsylvania and died 2 June 1951 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 123, Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 17A, 11 May 1910). The family belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church of Walnut Valley (Burd 1916). A third child, Jabez, was born in 1911. In April 1918, the couple's eldest son, Nelson, died. John died a little over a year later, in May 1919, leaving Sarah to raise their two surviving children—Lillian and Jabez—and run the family farm. Her widowed sister Lillian Hutchinson lived with the family in 1920. She worked as a housekeeper and helped Sarah with the children (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 14 January 1920). By 1930, Sarah had sold the farm. She lived in the village of Blairstown with her son Jabez and her half-sister Lillian (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 2A, 2 April 1930).
