CHILDREN OF READ TITMAN AND SARAH VANSCOTEN:

1220. (i.) JOHN V. TITMAN6, was born 20 December 1875, probably in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 19 May 1967. John appears on the 1880 census as a 4 year old child living with his parents in Blairstown Township. His Titman grandparents lived on the adjacent farm (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 290C, 11 June 1880). John was single in 1900. He resided at home with his parents on their farm in Blairstown Township and worked as a farm laborer. According to the census, John was unemployed for four months during the 1900 census year (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 26 June 1900). In 1920, John was 44 years old, single and still lived at home with his parents. He worked as a farm laborer (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Town of Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3B, 12 January 1920). John was still single and still at home in 1930. His mother had died and his father was retired. John's Luella kept house for her father and brother. John worked the family farm (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 11A, 1 April 1930). John never married. The Social Security death index lists his last residence as Blairtown, New Jersey. He is buried with his parents in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. His grave was field checked on 3 July 1999 and reads:

JOHN V. TITMAN
1875 - 1967

1221. (ii.) ALBERT BALTIS TITMAN6, was born 23 February 1877 probably in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 6 June 1933, aged 56 years, 3 months and 13 days (Reuther n.d., Stillwater Historical Society). Albert appears on the 1880 census as a 3 year old child living with his parents in Blairstown Township. His Titman grandparents lived on the adjacent farm (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 290C, 11 June 1880). Albert did not live with his parents in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 26 June 1900). Albert married in 1906, Sarah "Anna" Smith. She was born 1885 in Pennsylvania and died after 1933 (Stillwater Historical Society). In 1930, Albert and Anna lived on a rented farm in White Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Albert engaged in general farming. He had a Mr. Mackey as his hired hand (Mr. Mackey was 67 years old). Albert and Anna lived with their two daughters on the farm, both of the sons had left home. Mr. Mackey boarded with the family. The family owned a radio (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-37, White Township, Belvidere District, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6A, 18 April 1930). Albert died 3 years after the 1930 census and was buried in Belvidere Cemtery, Belvidere, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.). His obituary (dated 8 June 1933), gives his date of death as 6 June 1933. The obituary indicates that Albert was survived by his wife and two and two daughters. Both of Albert's sons and his daughter Mildred were over the age of 21. His daughter Dorothy was still quiet young, she was about 11 years old. The obituary also mentioned Albert's surviving brothers and sisters. They were his brothers John V., Roland and Charles Titman, and his sisters Luella Titman, Mrs. Charles Edgerton (Rose) Mrs. Wesley Treible (Cecelia) and Mrs. Marvin Harris (Lucy). The obituary failed to include Albert's brother Verner Titman who resided in Blairstown in 1933 (Stillwater Historical Society). Children of Albert Titman and Sarah Anna Smith:

1502. (i.) HARRY K. TITMAN7, was born August 1907 in New Jersey (Stillwater Historical Society) and died possibly before 1962. He married circa 1929, Mildred A. (Last Name Unknown). She was born circa 1907 in New Jersey. In 1930, Harry and Mildred lived in Belvidere New Jersey. They lived at 302 Market Street with Harold and Beatrice Osmun. According to the census Harold Osmun was their brother-in-law. Whether Mildred Titman was an Osmun before her marriage or if she was one of Beatrice Osmun's sisters is currently unknown. Harold Osmun was 27 and worked as a truck driver, Beatrice Osmun was 25. She had one child, two year old Leon C. Osmun. Harrry and Mildred did not have children. Harry worked as a machinist in a dye plant and Mildred worked in a shoe store as a saleslady. Glen O. and Frances R. Brodt (ages 26 and 17 respectively) were boarders in the household. Glen was a stationary engineer in the dye plant. Frances was not employed (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-3, Town of Belvidere, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 7 April 1930). Harry does not appear as a living descendant of Read Titman in Yards Creek Folk (Smith 1962). It is assumed that he died before 1962.

1503. (ii.) FREDERICK "FRED" TITMAN7, was born 7 June 1909 and died March 1971. His social security number was issued in New Jersey (Social Security Death Index). In 1962, he lived in New York state (Smith 1962).

1504. (iii.) MILDRED C. TITMAN7, was born circa 1912 in New Jersey. In 1930, she lived with her parents on farm in White Township outside of Belvidere, Warren County, New Jersey and attended school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-37, White Township, Belvidere District, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6A, 18 April 1930). She married First Name Unknown White. They lived in Stewartsville, New Jersey in 1962 (Smith 1962). Child of Mildred Titman White:

2942. (i.) JOSEPH WHITE8, he lived in Stewartsville, New Jersey in 1962 (Smith 1962).

1505. (iv.) DOROTHY M. TITMAN7, was born circa 1922 in New Jersey. She married First Name Unknown Hoser. They lived in Stewartsville, New Jersey in 1962 (Smith 1962).

1222. (iii.) CORA DELL TITMAN6, was born 18 August 1880 probably in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 5 June 1920 (Cedar Ridge Cemetery; IGI). She did not live with her parents in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 26 June 1900). Cora married George W. Crouse. George was born 1 August 1882 and died 30 December 1912 (Cedar Ridge Cemetery). The International Geneological Index (IGI) indicates that Cora married Charles Edgerton on 25 December 1907. This is incorrect, Charles Edgerton married Cora's sister Rose in 1907. This is borne out by both the 1920 and 1930 census (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 15B, 26 January 1920; 1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 4-21, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 2 April 1930). Both of these gives Rose as the name of the wife of Charles Edgerton. In addition, Cora is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey with George Crouse, not with Charles Edgerton. Their graves are marked by a single stone which was field checked on 25 March 2004. It is inscribed as follows:

CROUSE
GEORGE CROUSE
Aug 1, 1888 - Dec 30, 1912
CORA D., his wife
Aug 18 1880 - June 5, 1920

1223. (iv.) ROSE ANNA TITMAN6, was born 9 October 1882 probably in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (IGI) and died 5 April 1965. In 1900, Rose was a domestic servant in the household of John and Armintha Davis. The Davis family lived in Blairstown Township. Their grandson John D. Davis lived with them. He was born in July 1894. John Davis, Sr. was described as a "capitalist" in the census (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 5 June 1900). Rose Anna married in 24 December 1907, Charles Grant Edgerton, the son of James H. Edgerton and Nettie Eugenia Freeman. Charles's Aunt Addie E. Freeman, was married to Rose's Uncle Brackley Titman. Charles was born 18 August 1878 (Fretz 1908). The International Geneological Index (IGI) indicates that Rose's sister Cora married Charles Edgerton on 25 December 1907. Howver, both the 1920 and 1930 census list Rose as the wife of Charles Edgerton (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 15B, 26 January 1920; 1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 4-21, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 2 April 1930). In addition, Cora is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey with George Crouse, not with Charles Edgerton (Reuther n.d.). Cora was married to George Crouse, not Charles Edgerton. Around 1908, Charles and Rose lived at 96 Rose Street in Philipsburg, New Jersey. Charles was an employee of the Leigh and Hudson Railroad. The couple attended the Methodist episcopal Church (Fretz 1908). According to the 1920 census, Charles and Rose Edgerton lived with their two daughters in a rented house in Blairstown Township. Charles was employed as a trainman (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 15B, 26 January 1920). The Edgertons had purchased a house on Main Street in Blairstown by 1930. Their house was valued at $6000. Charles was unemployed at the time that the census was enumerated. He had been employed as a trainer on a steam railroad (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 4-21, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 2 April 1930). Rose resided in Blairstown in about 1962 (Smith 1962). Children of Rose Titman and Charles Edgerton:

2606. (i.) E. ROBERTA EDGERTON7, was born circa 1915 in New Jersey and died unknown. In 1920, she was listed in the census as a four year old living with her parents in Blairstown Township (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 15B, 26 January 1920). In 1930, Roberta lived with her parents on Main Street in Blairstown. She attended school during the 1930 census year (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 4-21, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 2 April 1930).

2607. (ii.) KATHERINE EDGERTON7, was born 25 September 1917 in New Jersey and died January 1986 in Florida (Social Security Death Index, number issued in New Jersey). In 1920, she was listed in the census as a four year old living with her parents in Blairstown Township (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 15B, 26 January 1920). In 1930, Catherine lived with her parents on Main Street in Blairstown. She attended school during the 1930 census year (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 4-21, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 2 April 1930). She married Unknown Reigel, and resided in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania in about 1962 (Smith 1962).

1224. (v.) VERNER K. TITMAN6, was born 8 January 1887 probably in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 7 February 1969 (Social Security Death Index). In 1900, Verner lived on his parents's farm in Blairstown Township and attended school (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 26 June 1900). In 1913, Verner married his fourth cousin Varna Newman 6, (David Newman5, Levi W. Newman4, Joseph Newman, Jr.3, Azuba Read Newman2, Joseph Read1). Varna was the daughter of David Read Newman and Mary Jo Newman. She was born circa 1891 in New Jersey. Verner and Varna were members of the First Methodist Episcopal church of Blairstown in 1916 (Burd 1916). In 1920, they lived with their daughter Lida, on High Street in the town of Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey. The house that Verner and Varna lived in may have been a duplex. The Titmans lived in one part of the dwelling and there was another family in the other part headed by Geoge Crisman. Verner Titman was a fireman (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Town of Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 11A, 21 January 1920). The family still lived on High Street in 1930. The census states that the home was not located on a farm, but then lists the property as farm number 88. The Crisman family no longer lived in the other part of the Titman's house. Varna's parents, David and Mary Newman, had moved into the house with Verner, Varna and Lida. It is possible they occupied the portion former occupied by the Crismans. Verner Titman was employed as a clerk in a lumber shop. His father-in-law David Newman worked as a laborer (or handy man) for a private farmily. Neither Varna Titman or her mother Mary Newman were employed outside the home (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Town of Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6B, 23 April 1930). The Social Security death index lists Verner's last residence as Blairtown, New Jersey. Child of Verner and Varna Titman:

1506. (i.) LIDA M. TITMAN7, was born circa 1919 in New Jersey. The 1920 census gives her age as 11 months (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Town of Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 11A, 21 January 1920). In 1930, she lived with her parents and maternal grandparents on High Street in Blairstown. Lida attended school during the census year (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Town of Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6B, 23 April 1930). She married Unknown Stoffels. Lida resided in Blairstown in 1961 (Smith 1962). Children of Lida Titman Stoffels"

2944. (ii.) DAVID VICTOR STOFFELS8, (Smith 1962).

1225. (vi.) ROLAND TITMAN6, was born 14 February 1889 probably in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 31 March 1981. He married circa 1916, Minnie (Last Name Unknown). She was born 25 January 1896 in Pennsylvania and died December 1978, probably in Warren County. The Social Security Death Index indicates that her death benefits were paid to an address in Blairstown. In 1930, Roland and Minnie lived on a farm on RD2 outside of Delaware in Knowlton Township, Warren County. They were renting their farm (1930 United States Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 21-13, sheet 4A, 9 & 10 April 1930). The Social Security death index lists Roland's last residence as Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey. Their gravestones were field checked on 25 March 2004 and are inscribed as follows:

1226. (vii.) CHARLES M. TITMAN6, was born 26 August 1890 probably in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 19 November 1977, probably in Pennsylvania (Reuther n.d.; Social Security Death Index). In 1900, Charles lived on his parents's farm in Blairstown Township and attended school (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 26 June 1900). He married circa 1917, Eva B. (Last Name Unknown). She was born 29 August 1896 in New Jersey and died September 1984, probably in Pennsylvania. In 1930, Charles and Eva and their daughter Doris lived on a farm in Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. They owned the farm. The family also owned a radio (1930 United States Federal Census, Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Enumeration District 48-94, sheet 8B, 16 April 1930). They were still residents of Mount Bethel in 1962 (Smith 1962). The Social Security Death index gives Mount Bethel as the last residence of both Charles and Eva. Charles and Eva are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery (Reuther n.d.). Child of Charles and Eva Titman:

2608. (i.) DORIS V. TITMAN7, was circa 1927 in New Jersey and died unknown. In 1930, she lived with her parents on the family farm in Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (1930 United States Federal Census, Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Enumeration District 48-94, sheet 8B, 16 April 1930). Doris married (First Name Unknown) Apgar. She resided in Stewartsville, New Jersey in 1962 (Smith 1962).

1227. (viii.) CECELIA V.TITMAN6, was born 26 June 1892 probably in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 2 September 1971, in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Social Security Deat Index). In 1900, she lived on her parents's farm in Blairstown Township and attended school (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 26 June 900). Cecelia married on 23 February 1911, in Blairstown, Sylvester "Wesley" Treible, the son of William R. Treible and Anna Sarah Strunt. Wesley was born 1 August 1887 in Smithfield township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania and died 8 April 1954 in New Jersey (Schichner 2000). Sylvester worked for Cecelia's Uncle Wesley and Aunt Catherine (Titman) Linaberry in 1910. He lived with the Linaberrys on their farm near the village of Delaware in Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (1910 United States Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 133, sheet 6A, 30 April 1930). In 1920, Wesley and Cecelia lived in Blairstown Township. Wesley is listed by his given name of "Sylvester Treible" in the census. The couple resided on a rented farm with their three oldest children—Edythe, Harold and Wilma—their four younger children had not yet been born (1920 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 151, sheet 1B, 3 January 1920). By 1930, three additional children had arrived—Donald, Clifford and Marion. Their son William appears to have arrived after the 1930 census. The Treibles still lived in Blairstown Township in 1930, but they had purchased a farm and were no longer renting. Cecelia did not work outside the home, instead she managed the house and raised six children. The famly had a radio, which the children probably gathered around for entertainment. The census indicates that Wesley Treible (as given in the census) was a farmer and an employer. There were no hired hands living with the family in 1930. The census does not list occupations for the boys. Harold, Donald and Clifford were between 7 and 14 years of age, it is possible that they earned some pocket money working around the farm, but this hardly qualifies them as their father's paid labor. Who Wesley Treible had working for him in 1930 is unknown (1930 United States Federal Census, BlairstownTownship, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 21-4, sheet 13B, 19 April 1930). The Washington Star reported Wesley's death at the age of 67. Wesley died on 8 April 1954 (the obituary was dated 9 April). The newspaper placed Wesley's death in Hope, while David R. Schichner (2000) places Wesley's death in Newton, Sussex County. Cecelia resided in Hope in 1962 (Smith 1962). Cecelia lived until September 1971. The Social Security Death Index places her death in Hope Township. Children of Cecelia Titman and Wesley Treible:

He lived with his parents in Blairstown Township in 1920 and 1930. Harold attended school during the 1930 census year (1920 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 151, sheet 1B, 3 January 1920; 1930 United States Federal Census, BlairstownTownship, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 21-4, sheet 13B, 19 April 1930). He married Ethel W. Walker, the daughter of a Mr. Walker and of Grace Treible (Schichner 2000). His social security number was issued in New Jersey before 1951 (Social Security Dath Index). He resided in Arizona in 1962 (Smith 1962). Harold was residing in Escondido, San Diego County, California at the time of his death in 1987.

She married on 3 July 1941, Leroy B. Hutchins. He was born 3 November 1919 in Cedar Grove, New Jersey and died 2 August 1991 (Schichner 2000). Her name is given as "Mrs. Pauline Treible Hutchins" in Yards Creek Folk (Smith 1962). The Social Security Death index gives her name as "Wilma Hutchins." 1230. (xi.) LUCY L. TITMAN6, was born 8 August 1897 probably in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1 June 1985 probably in Orange County, Florida (Florida Death Index, Certificate: 60819). Lucy appears on the 1900 census as a one year old child living with her parents and older siblings on their farm in Blairstown Township (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 26 June 1900). In October 1916, Lucy and her sister Luella were receieved as members of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown (Burd 1916). Lucy still lived with her parents in 1920. The family farm was still located in Blairstown Township. According to the census she worked as a servant in a boarding school. As the family lived close to the Town of Blairstown, it is possible that Lucy worked for Blair Academy (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Town of Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3B, 12 January 1920). Another employee at Blair Acadamy in 1920 was Marvin Oliver Harris, who Lucy eventually married. Did Marvin and Lucy meet while working at Blair Academy? They resided in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey in 1962. The couple retired to Florida. In 1985, when Lucy died, they were living in Orlando, Orange County, Florida. Although Marvin died in Orange County in 1987 (Florida Death Index, Certificate: 41747), his last residence in the Social Security Death Index was given as Pompano Beach, Broward County, Florida. Children of Lucy Titman and Marvin Harris:

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES:

Isaac Read Titman was the second son and second child of the 12 children of Baltis Titman and Malinda Read. He appears to have been named after his maternal grandfather, Isaac Read, III. However, he was known throughout his life as "Read" and not as Isaac. Read was born 15 November 1851 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Cedar Ridge Cemetery; LDS Batch #C509751). His parents owned a farm along Yards Creek at the foot of the Kitttaniny or Blue Mountains, just to the north of Walnut Valley (Beers 1873). The original Titman ancestor, Ludwig Dittman (later anglizied to Titman) is supposed to have settled in this area. Read grew up on this farm. He appears as a resident of his parents household on the 1860 and 1870 census.

In about 1875, Read married his third cousin Sarah Catherine Vanscoten 5 (Margaret Ann Kinney VanScoten4, Catherine Read Kinney3, Aaron Read2, Joseph Read1). Sarah was born 26 September 1857 in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of John A. VanScoten and Margaret Ann Kinney. Her paternal grandfather, Daniel VanScoten was a tavern keeper and the postmaster of Walnut Valley. Her maternal grandmother, Catherine Read Kinney was a first cousin of Read's mother, Malinda Read Titman. Sarah and Read shared Joseph Read as their gret-great-grandfather.

Read and Sarah settled on a farm adjacent to Read's parents. The 1880 census lists the two households adjacent to one another. Read and Sarah Titman lived in dwelling number 142, while Baltis and Malinda Titman lived in dwelling 143. Two of Read and Sarah's 12 childen had been born by 1880: John and Albert. Sarah was expecting her third child and first daughter at the time the census was enumerated (11 June 1880 is recorded on the census). Cora Titman was born in August 1880. Table 1 summarizes Read and Sarah's household in 1880:

Between 1875 and 1902, Read and Sarah had 12 children together. These children were John, Albert, Verner, Roland, Charles, Cecelia, Leon, Boyd, Lucy, and Luella Titman and Cora Crouse and Rose Ann Edgerton. When the 1900 census was enumerated 11 of these children had been born. According to the census, Sarah was the mother of 11 children, 10 of whom were living at the time of the census (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 26 June 1900). The Titman's son Leon had died in 1896, shortly before his second birthday. Their youngest duaghter Luella would not be born until 1902, after the census. Three of Read and Sarah's children had already left the house and were working and boarding out in 1900—Albert, Cora and Rose. In 1900, Read and Sarah still resided in Blairstown Township. They owned their own farm, but it was mortgaged. Read's sister, Zilla Titman Linaberry and her family were listed adjacent to Read's family on the 1900 census. Read and Zilla's mother resided with the Linaberrys in 1900 and was still living there at the time of her death in 1906 (obituary of Malinda Titman's obituary). Table 2 shows the composition of Read and Sarah's household in 1900. Read's name is given in the census as Isaac, which was his given first name:

Sarah Titman was a member of the Walnut Valley Methodist Episcopal Church. Her mother-in-law, Malinda Read Titman had also been a member of the church. In 1916, Sarah's two youngest daughters, Lucy and Luella, were in the preparatory class that was admitted to the church for membership. Sarah's neices, Pearl and Bertha Linaberry were also in that class. They were the daughters of Zilla Titman Linaberry. Read's sisters Zilla Linaberry and Marilla Ervine also belonged to the church, as did his brother George and George's wife Diana Beck Titman (Burd 1916; Obituary of Malinda Titman).

In 1920, Read and Sarah lived in Blairstown Township with three of their children: John, Lucy and Luella. Read Titman was a general farmer (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3B, 12 January 1920).

Sarah Catherine Vanscoten Titman died 6 May 1924, probably in Blairstown Township, New Jersey. After her death, Read continued to live on the Blairstown Farm. The 1930 census places Read and his children John and Luella on the farm. Read was retired, John ran the farm and Luella kept house for her father and brother (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 11A, 1 April 1930).
