READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

CELIA TITMAN JONES5

564. CELIA "SEAL" TITMAN5 (Malinda Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 16 October 1861 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509751) and died after 1930. She grew up on her parents farm outside of Walnut Valley in Blairstown Township (1870 United States Federal Census Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 41B; 1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 290C; Beers 1874). Celia married circa 1883, William Jones. He was born January 1860 in New Jersey. The couple owned a farm in Blairstown Township. The 1887 Warren County History and Directory lists William Jones as a farmer who was a resident of Blairstown Township. According to their great-granddaughter, Diane Kellogg, Interstate 80 cuts through part of the old farm. In 1900, William and Seal and 7 of their children lived on their farm (the youngest child, Harold, was not yet born). The census indicates that the farm was mortgaged (1900 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 182, sheets 9A and 9B, 18 June 1900). The 1906 obituary of Seal's mother Malinda Read Titman places the family farm near the hamlet of Vail in Blairstown Township. The 1910 census places them on Knowlton Road. According to the 1910 census, William and Celia owned their farm, but it was mortgaged. The census states that Celia was the mother of 10 children, 8 of whom were living in 1910. All eight of these children lived with their parents (1910 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 123, sheets 6A, 22 April 1910). In 1920, the couple still owned a mortgaged farm in Blairstown Township. All of their sons and their eldest daughter still lived at home. Their son Walter had brought his bride to live at his parents home. Their daughter Olive had married and started her own family. There were ten members of the family living in the household in 1920 (1920 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 151, sheet 3A, 10 January 1920; Lorenz n.d.). William Jones was elected sheriff in 1923 (Kellogg 2004). By 1930, All of Celia and William's children had married and begun homes of their own. The Joneses owned their farm, which was valued at $6000. William, who was 70, was still actively engaged in farming. The couple's son Elmer and his wife Mildred, were listed adjacent to William and Celia on the 1930 census (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 5 April 1930).

Celia Titman and William Jones had 10 children born betweeen 1885 and about 1904. They had at least 11 grandchildren born between 1919 and 1928 and at least 3 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Total identified descendants equals 28.

CHILDREN OF CELIA TITMAN AND WILLIAM JONES:

2582. (i.) LINNIE M. JONES6, was born 30 May 1885 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died April 1978 in Columbia, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Social Security Death Index; the IGI also gives this date of birth). In 1900, Linnie lived with her parents and attended school (1900 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 182, sheets 9A and 9B, 18 June 1900). She was employed as a school teacher in 1910 and lived at home with her parents. The census also indicates that she attended school during the 1910 census year (1910 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 123, sheets 6A, 22 April 1910). Linnie was still teaching school and living at home with her parents in 1920 (1920 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 151, sheet 3A, 10 January 1920). She married circa 1927, Elmer Walker. (Lorenz n.d.). Elmer was born 10 October 1879 in New Jersey and died April 1964 in Pennsylvania (Social Security Death Index). The Walker family was listed as adjacent to the Jones famliy on the 1900 census. The Walker family in 1900 was headed by Charles and Ellen Walker (ages 54 and 52 respectively). Three of their five children lived with them (of the other two, one was deceased and one was living elsewhere). The children living at home in 1900 were Mary (age 23), Elmer (age 20) and Lucie (age 13). Mary was a school teacher, Elmer was working as a farm laborer, and Lucie was at school (1900 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 182, sheet 9B, 19 June 1900). Linnie and Elmer appear to have known each other all their lives. However, they did not marry until Elmer was 47 and Linnie was 42. In 1930, Elmer and Linnie lived on their farm in Blairstown Township. The Walker's owned their farm. Mr. France (age 17) worked as a farm labor for the Walkers. Elmer's sister, Lucy Walker, lived with the couple. She was born circa 1886 in New Jersey. Elmer and Lucy had no children (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12A, 17 April 1930). Linnie Jones Walker reside in Blairstown in 1962 (Smith 1962).

2583. (ii.) CLARENCE J. JONES6, was born 16 December 1887 in Blairstwon Township, Warren County, New Jersey (1900 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 182, sheets 9A and 9B, 18 June 1900 for month and year, date from IGI) and died by 1937. He resided with his parents and attended school in 1900 (1900 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 182, sheets 9A and 9B, 18 June 1900). In 1910, Clarence and his brother Herman were employed as a well drillers in the construction business. Clarence was single and lived at home with his parents (1910 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 123, sheets 6A, 22 April 1910). He was still single and living at home with his parents in 1920. He and Herman continued to work as well drillers (1920 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 151, sheet 3A, 10 January 1920). It is probable that they formed their partnership in Clarence J. Jones, Incorporated. A 1938 advertisement for the company gives 1919 as the year the company was founded (Blairstown Press, 17 March 1938). Clarence married circa 1921, Ethel Snover. She was born 1888 in New Jersey and died 1933. In 1930, Clarence, Ethel and their four children lived in Blairstown Township. The couple rented their home for $15. Clarence was employed as a well driller. The census lists him as an employer (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9A, 9 April 1930), a 1937 advertisement indicates that he and his brother Herman were partners in the well drilling business (Blairstown Press,17 June 1937). Ethel died in 1933 (Reuther n.d). Clarence died before 1937. An advertisement for well drilling in the Blairstown Press, dated 17 June 1937, announces that Herman Jones was the "Former partner of Clarence Jones, Deceased." The ad was for the services of Clarence's brothers, Herman and Walter as well drillers. The same ad appeared again in the paper on 23 September 1937. However, Clarence's former company was now run by R. Mortensen. Mortensen ran an ad for "The Old Reliable Clarence J. Jones, Incorporated," excavaters of artesian wells and water supply plants, in the Blairstown Press, on 17 March 1938. The ad noted that Clarence's company had been in business since 1919. Clarence and Ethel are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Lorenz n.d.; Reuther n.d.). Children of Clarence Jones and Ethel Snover:

2618. (i.) GEORGE W. JONES7, was born circa 1922 in New Jersey and died unknown. In 1930, he lived with his parents in Blairstown Township and attended school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9A, 9April 1930). He resided on Route 94 in Warren County, New Jersey in 1962 (Smith 1962). He was a resident of Blairstown in 2004.

2619. (ii.) EARLE H. JONES7, was born circa 1923 in New Jersey and died unknown. In 1930, he lived with his parents in Blairstown Township and attended school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9A, 9April 1930). He resided in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey in 1962 (Smith 1962). He was a resident of Blairstown in 2004.

2620. (iii.) ALICE LOUISA JONES7, was born 1925 in New Jersey and died 1932. In 1930, Alice lived with her parents in Blairstown Township and attended school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9A, 9April 1930). Alice died in 1932 and was buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey.

2621. (iv.) FRANK A. JONES7, was born circa 1928 in New Jersey and died unknown. In 1930, he lived with his parents in Blairstown Township and attended school. The census lists his age as 1 year, 6 months (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9A, 9April 1930). He resided in Columbia, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey in 1962 (Smith 1962).

2584. (iii.) HERMAN A. JONES6, was born February 1889 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and probably died before 1962. He resided with his parents and attended school in 1900 (1900 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 182, sheets 9A and 9B, 18 June 1900). In 1910, Herman and his brother Clarence were employed as a well drillers in the construction business. Herman was single and lived at home with his parents (1910 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 123, sheets 6A, 22 April 1910). He was still single and living at home with his parents in 1920. He and Clarence continued to work as well drillers (1920 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 151, sheet 3A, 10 January 1920). An advertisement for well drilling in the Blairstown Press, dated 17 June 1937, announces that Herman Jones was the "Former partner of Clarence Jones, Deceased." The ad was for the services of Herman and his brother Walter as well drillers. The same ad appeared again in the paper on 23 September 1937. Clarence Jones opened his own company in 1919, it is probable that Herman's partnership with his brother dates to that year (Blairstown Press, 17 March 1938). Herman married after 1920, Geneva Johnson (Lorenz n.d.). She was born circa 1898 in Pennsylvania. The couple resided in Blairstown Township. They owned their farm. The also owned a radio. Charlotte Jones lived with the couple. It is difficult to tell her relationship to Herman from the census data. She was Herman's adopted daughter. Charlotte was born circa 1925 in Pennsylvania. Her mother was born in New Jersey and her father was born in Scotland. Herman and Geneva had two boarders, Elsie Shall, age 35 and Frank Read (age 24). Frank was a farm laborer and probably worked for Herman. The latter's name was illegible in the census (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 18 April 1930). He may have died before 1962, as his name does not appear in the list of living desendants of Cecelia Titman Jones that appear in Yards Creek People (Smith 1962).

2585. (iv.) OLIVE B. JONES6, was born 21 July 1892 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 4 January 1992 at the age of 99, probably in New Mexico (Cedar Ridge Cemetery; Social Security Death Index). She resided with her parents and attended school in 1900 (1900 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 182, sheets 9A and 9B, 18 June 1900; Kellogg 2004). Olive lived at home with her parents in 1910 and attended school (1910 United Sates Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 123, sheets 6A, 22 April 1910). She married circa 1916, Herbert N. Lorenz (Lorenz n.d.). Herbert was born 27 March 1892 in Pennsylvania and died 12 September 1973 in Woodhaven, Queens, New York (Cedar Ridge Cemetery; Social Security Index). Herbert's father was born in New York and his mother was born in Germany. When Herbert was about two years old, his family resided in Mexico. Herbert's brother Lucas was born there in about 1893. In 1930, Herbert and Olive and their two daughters lived with Lucas Lorenz and his wife Frances and their son Robert. The family lived at 7416 Wark Lane (if my translation of the spelling in the census is correct) in the Woodhaven area of what is now the Borough of Queens in New York City. Lucas was employed as a millwright and Herbert was employed as a machinery salesman. Both men were employed on the day the census taker visited the household. However, the census suggests that Lucas Lorenz may have been unemployed for at least part of the 1930 census year as a line number for unemployment is given in the census—line number 2169 (1930 United Sates Federal Census, Enumeration District 41-586, Block F, 6th Assembly, Woodhaven, Queens County, New York City, New York, sheet 3B, 4 April 1930). Oive and Herbert were life long residents of Woodhaven. They were there in 1962 when Yards Creek People was published and Olive's name appeared in the list of descendants of Cecelia Titman Jones. Her address was given as "Wood Haven, L.I. [Long Island]" (Smith 1962). They were residents of the town when Herbert in 1972. Olive went to New Mexico sometime after Herbert's death. She may have lived with or near her younger daughter, Eleanor Schneider. Olive died in 1992 in Las Cruces, Dona Ana County, New Mexico. She and Herbert were buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their grave stones were field checked 25 March 2004 and are inscribed as follows:

It was largely through her efforts that a consolidated school district was formed and children living outside the city limits were bussed to the Oneonta Schools" (Obituay of Elsie Mae Frost).

In October 1916, Charles was a preparatory member who was received into the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. The Blairstown church had a sister church in Walnut Valley and it is possible that Charles was received into the Walnut Valley M.E. Church (Reuther n.d.).
