JOHN A. READ5
569. JOHN A. READ5 (Isaac Fonger Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born July 1861 in Warren County, New Jersey and died 8 February 1940 (Blairstown Press, 14 February 1940). He married circa 1891, May Titman, possibly the daughter of Dewitt C. Titman and Elmira Kirkhuff of Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey. She was born in November 1873 and died in 1927. In 1900, John and May lived adjacent to John's parents in Jacksonburg, Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey. John was employed as a day laborer. He and May rented their home. They had one child living in 1900, their four year old daughter Mabel. According to the census, the couple had had two children before 1900, but one of the children had died before the census was enumerated (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 14A, 27 June 1900). During the first decade of the twentieth century, John and May either lived in Pennsylvania, or May went to the hospital in Easton, Pennsylvania to have her babies. Three of their children were born in Pennsylvania: Floyd in 1902, Raymond in 1904 and Walter in January 1909. The family resided in Phillipsburg, Warren County, New Jersey in March 1910 when the census was taken. They rented a home at 178 South Main Street. John worked as a laborer in a wagon foundry (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 138, Philipsburg Borough, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6A, 20 April 1910). The family remained in New Jersey after 1910, the youngest daughter, Margaret, was born in the state in 1913. They were back in the Blairstown area by at least 1916, if not earlier. "Mrs. John Read" was listed as a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown in that year (Burd 1916). In 1920, John and May appeared on the 1920 census as residents of Blairstown Township. John was a laborer. The family still rented their home. Four of their children were living with them: Floyd, Raymond, Walter and Margaret (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6B, 16 January 1920). After May's death, John moved in with his younger brother Flock Read. In 1930, Flock, his wife Levina, and his daughters Betty and Helen shared their home with John. John was employed as a laborer at the "new golf course" (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9A, 9 April 1930). Flock resided in his parents home in Jacksonburg, which was where he and John had grown up. John and May are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonbug, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey.

2047. (i.) MABEL READ6, was born November 1895, in Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown. In 1900, she lived with her parents in Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Her Read grandparents were listed adjacent to her parents's home (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 14A, 27 June 1900). The family lived in Phillipsburg, Warren County in 1910. Mabel was 13 and attended school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 138, Philipsburg Borough, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6A, 20 April 1910). Her family returned to the Blairstown area between 1910 and 1916. Mabel was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown in 1916. She is listed as "Mabel Read" and was probably still single (Burd 1916). Mabel did not reside with her parents in 1920 (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6B, 16 January 1920).
2859. (ii.) CHILD READ6, was born between 1892 and 1900, probably in Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown before 1900. It is not known if this childwas born before or after Mabel (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 14A, 27 June 1900). This child may be buried in the Isaac Fonger Read family plot in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County. There is a stone in the plot marked simply as "Infants" (the plot was visited on 2 July 1999).
2048. (iii.) FLOYD A. READ6, was born 24 March 1902 in Pennsylvania and died December 1987 in Portland, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (Social Security Death Index). He lived with his family in Phillipsburg, Warren County, New Jersey in 1910 and attended school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 138, Philipsburg Borough, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6A, 20 April 1910). The family moved back to the Blairstown area by 1916. Floyd was received as a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church in October 1916 (Burd 1916). He resided with his parents in 1920 in Blairstown Township and worked as a laborer (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6B, 16 January 1920). Floyd married circa 1923, Ruth S. (Last Name Unknown). She was born 26 October 1902 in New Jersey and died 18 May 1991 (Social Security Death Index). Floyd and Ruth owned a taxi cab service in Blairstown in 1930. They lived in a rented house on Main Street. The couple did not have any children (1930 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-4, sheet 2B, 3 April 1930). When I first visited Blairstown in about 1975, one of the first buildings I saw along Route 94 was "Read's Taxi Cab." Floyd was the Clerk of the Blairstown Township Board of Health in 1938. He announced a meeting of the Board in the Blairstown Press, on 24 March 1938. The meeting was scheduled for 7:30PM, Friday, 1 April 1938 in the Odd Fellows Hall over the Great Eastern Store. Floyd was a resident of Blairstown in 1962 (Smith 1962).
2049. (iv.) RAYMOND READ, Sr.6, was born 12 July 1904 in Pennsylvania and died 28 April 1991 (Social Security Death Index). Raymond lived with his parents in 1910 in Phillipsburg, Warren County, New Jersey. He was 5 years old and had not yet started school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 138, Philipsburg Borough, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6A, 20 April 1910). Between 1910 and 1916, the Reads returned to the Blairstown area of Warren County (Burd 1916). In 1920, Raymond lived with his parents in Blairstown Township and attended school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6B, 16 January 1920). He married circa 1923, Florence Parr. She was born circa 1908 in New Jersey. In April 1930, Raymond and Florence lived with their first three children in Blairstown Township. Raymond was normally employed as a laborer on the roads, but he was unemployed when the census was taken. The couple rented their home for $10 per month and they had a radio. None of their children were old enough to attend school (1930 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-4, sheet 12B, 18 April 1930). Florence was expecting her first set of twin sons—Donald and Harold—at the time of the 1930 census. The twins were born two weeks after the census was enumerated. By the spring of 1947, Florence had given birth to 13 children. She had two sets of twins: Donald and Harold in 1930 and Larry and Harry in 1942. Children of Raymond Read and Florence Parr:

BLANCHE MAE READ7, was born 31 August 1923 in Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey and died 11 August 1992 in Citrus County, Florida (Cedar Ridge Cemetery; Florida Death Index; Social Security Death Index). In April 1930, Blanche was 6 years old and lived with her parents in Blairstown Township (1930 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-4, sheet 12B, 18 April 1930). She married first, John Lauer, and second, Donald F. Arnold. They were married by 1962 and resided in Hope, Warren County, New Jersey. Donald was born 5 June 1917 and died 29 August 1997. He served in World War II as a Tec. 5 in the U.S. Army. He was residing in Columbia, Warren County, New Jersey at the time of his death. Blanche was a chef and the owner and operater of the Kregsville Diner on Route 209 in Kresgeville, Pennsylvania. Blance and Donald retired to Florida (Cedar Ridge Cemetery; John Reade, personal communication, 13 June 2002; Randy B. Read, personal communication, 4 October 2002; Social Security Death Index). 2063. (ii.) ROLAND "EDWARD" READ7, was born 22 June 1925, Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey and died 6 May 1984, in Citrus County, Florida (Florida Death Index; Social Security Death Index). His death was announced in the Blairstown Press on 16 May 1984. In April 1930, Edward was 5 years old and lived with his parents in Blairstown Township (1930 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-4, sheet 12B, 18 April 1930). He married on 24 March 1950, in Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Barbara Jean Hartzell, daughter of Merle Arthur Hartzell and Esther Mae Evans. Edward was an electrician lineman. In 1962, he resided in Allamuchy, Warren County, New Jersey (Smith 1962). He and Barbara retired to Florida (Robert H. Evans, personal communication, 19 February 2002; Randy B. Read, personal communication, 4 October 2002). Edward is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. His grave stone gives his name as "R. Edward Read". 2064. (iii.) RAYMOND "RAY" READ, Jr.7, was born 23 February 1927 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 20 September 1970. Cause of death was electrocution from a work related accident. He worked as an electrician lineman for the Utility Line Construction Co. of Jenkinstown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (Randy Bruce Read, personal communication 24 July 2002). In April 1930, Raymond was 3 years old and lived with his parents in Blairstown Township (1930 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-4, sheet 12B, 18 April 1930). He married Linn Louise Rennie the daughter of Marie Rennie of Oxford, Warren County, New Jersey. She was born 6 November 1932 and died 1 March 1993. In 1962, Ray resided in Washington, Warren County, New Jersey (Smith 1962). Raymond is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. He is buried in the same plot with his brothers R. Edward Read and Chester Read. At the time of his enlistment he discovered that the docoter had entered "R-E-A-D-E" on his birth certificate. From that time forward he became "Donald Reade" (John Reade, personal communication, 13 June 2002). He married first, Betty Yetter, the sister of Lorraine Yetter, who married Donald's twin Harold. Walter's family lived in Phillipsburg, Warren County, New Jersey in 1910 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 138, Philipsburg Borough, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6A, 20 April 1910). The family moved to the Bliarstown aea of Warren County between 1910 and 1916 (Burd 1916). In 1920, Walter lived with his parents in Blairstown Township and attended school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6B, 16 January 1920). He married circa 1927, Nellie Sipley, the daughter of Arvil and Maggie Sipley. After Arvil's death, Maggie Sipley married Clark Messler5 (Maria Catherine Kinney Messler4, Catherine Read Kinney3, Aaron Read2, Joseph Read1). Clark was Walter's third cousin once removed. Nellie was born 21 March 1906, probably in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died March 1985 probably in Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (Social Security Death Index). In 1930, Walter and Nellie lived in Marksboro, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey. The family was renting their home. It is probable that their landlord was William J. Brown. The Reads and Brown both lived in dwelling number 6. The Reads were family number 7 and William Brown was family number 8. The census gives the Read family's rent as $12. The family owned a radio. Walter was a truck driver, according to the census he was employed (1930 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-6, sheet 1A, 14 April 1930). The depression appears to have hit the family fairly hard as Walter appeared on a list of delinquent tax payers in Frelinghuysen township in the 24 March 1938 edition of the Blairstown Press. According to the paper, Walter owed $4.85 in taxes for 1935 and $5.28 of taxes for 1937. In 1939, when Nellie's brother Raymond died, Walter and Nellie lived in Hainesburg (Blairstown Press, 21 September 1939). Walter was living in Mt. Bethel, Pennsylvania by 1962 (Smith 1962). At the time of his death in 1969 he owned a construction business. Nellie remarried after Walter's death. The Blairstown Press, announced the marriage of Nellie Read and Carl Datesman on 27 March 1973 (15 April 1973). Carl Datesman was born 26 March 1904 and died April 1986, probably in Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Children of Walter and Nellie Read:

She married a Mr. Walters of Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey (Blairstown Press, 27 March 1969; Smith 1962).
2051. (vi.) MARGARET A. READ6, was born 28 November 1913, in New Jersey and died 5 December 1996 (Social Security Death Index). In 1920, Margaret lived with her parents and attended school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6B, 16 January 1920). By 1930, Margaret was 17 years old and was out on her own. She worked as a maid in the household of 63 year old Sarah Snoover, who lived on High Street in the village of Blairstown. The Snover household also included Sarah's daughter Edith (age 35 years) and a boarder named Leon Davidson (age 30 years), who was a Presbyterian minister. Edith was employed as a housekeeper in the boarding house. Margaret lived in the Snover boarding house (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 4 April 1930). Margaret married, after 1930, her fourth cousin once removed, Willard L. Luse 6, (Abram R. Luse6, Aaron L. Luse5, Isaac Read Luse4, Elizabeth Read3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1) as his second wife. He was the son of Abram R. Luse and Lottie G. Englert. Willard was born 1900, in New Jersey and died 1940. He was buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. There is a stone for Margaret in Cedar Ridge Cemetery but no final date has been cut. Margaret married second, First Name Unknown Lundy. In 1962, she lived in Allamuchy, Warren County, New Jersey (Smith 1962). Her last known residence was Hackettstown (Social security Death Index).
