READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

SUSAN I. READ5

571. SUSAN I. "SUE" READ5 (Isaac Fonger Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 19 March 1865 in Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509751) and died 7 February 1934, in New Milford, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. She married at her parent's home in Jacksonburg on 12 August 1889, Frank T. Austin. Their wedding was announced in the Blairstown Press on 19 June 1889:

MARRIED
AUSTIN—READ—June 12th at the bride's home, by the Rev. M.C. Reed, Frank T. Austin of Avoca, Pa and Miss Sue I. Read of Jacksonburg.

Frank Austin was born circa 1860 in Pennsylvania and died circa 1933 in New Milford, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. He was a resident of the town of Avoca, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania when he and Sue were married. The couple lived there for awhile after their marriage and then moved to Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. They initially settled in Brooklyn and eventually moved to New Milford. In 1910, they resided on Washington Street in New Milford. Frank was a merchant operating his own general store, while Sue worked as a milliner in her own shop. By 1910, the couple's two daughters—Ruth and Esther—were in their teens and probably helped their parents in the family business (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 82, New Milford Borough, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet 2B, 19-20 April 1910).

In 1920, Frank and Sue still lived in New Milford and operated their general store. The census listed both of them as retail merchants. Both of their daughters were at home and were employed as teachers (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 87, New Milford Borough, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet 3B, 16-17 January 1920). Esther married Hale Kingsbury, a local dairy farmer, in about 1924. They appear as residents of Lanesboro Borough. Susquehana County in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 58-27, Lanesboro Borough, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet 8A, 14 April 1930). Ruth Austin had moved to Wilkes-Barre in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania by 1930 and was teaching school there (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 40-244, Ward 12, Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, sheet 7B, 7 April 1930). I have been unable to locate Frank and Sue in the 1930 census.

Frank Austin died in about 1933. Sue died suddenly on 7 February 1934. Her obituary appeared in the Blairstown Press on 15 February 1934:

The death of Mrs. Sue Read Austin came as a shock on last Wednesday, Feb. 7, to her many friends and relatives in this community. She had been in her usual good health until Tuesday, when a rush of blood to the head caused a cerebral hemorrhage and she died the following day.

Mrs. Austin was a daughter of the late Isaac F. and Margaret Flock Read. Her husband, Frank T. Austin, died about a year ago. She is survived by two daughter[s], Miss Ruth Austin, Garden City, N.Y., and Mrs. Hale Kingsbury, Lanesboro, Pa., also by four grandchildren, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Elmer W. Breed, Brooklyn, Pa; Mrs. Kate A. Jones, Montclair, N.J.; Flock, Harry, Clark, and John Read of Blairstown; Boyd Read of Hainesburg, and Andrew A.[sic] Read of California.

Mrs. Austin was 68 years old and spent the greater part of her life in Pennsylvania, having lived at Avoca, Brooklyn, and New Milford. She was a member of the M.E. church of that place and was an earnest Bible student. Funeral services were held from her late home on Saturday afternoon. Interment was made in the cemetery at New Milford.
