READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS
HARRY H. READ5
575. HARRY H. READ5 (Isaac Fonger Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 1873 and died 10 July 1934 (Blairstown Press, 12 July 1934). He married circa 1906, Julia A. Bird, the daughter of James C. and Mary A. Bird. In 1860, Julia's parents lived in Hardwick Township. Julia's father was a laborer. Her family lived in dwelling number 48, while Harry's first cousin (once removed), David R. Konkle, lived in dwelling 52 (1860 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 197, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 389R). Julia was born in New Jersey in 1878 and died 1951. "Mrs. Harry Read" was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown in 1916 (Burd 1916). In 1920, Harry and Julia lived on a farm in Blairstown Township (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 8B, 20 January 1920).
Harry's sister Sue Austin died in early February 1934. It is probable that his sister Kate Jones died a few months later. The country was also in the midst of the Great Depression, farmers all over Warren County were losing their farms due to tax and mortgage foreclosures and personal bankruptcy. These inidivuals included Harry's friends, neighbors and cousins. Harry committed suicide on the morning of 10 July 1934. Julia found him hanging in the barn early that morning. His obituary states that he had been despondent for some weeks and suggests that his depression may have led him to kill himself (Blairstown Press, 12 July 1934).
Funeral Services Will be Held Friday at the Late Home
Harry H. Read, 61, a farmer near Jacksonburg, was found hanging from a rafter in the barn on his property at 6:30 o'clock Tuesday morning by his wife, who went in search of him when he did not return from doing the morning chores.
Coroner Cummins of Belvidere was summoned and pronounced him a suicide. Despondency for the past few weeks is thought to have been the cause of his rash act.
The deceased was the son of the late Isaac F. Read and Margaret Flock Read, and had lived in this vicinity all his life.
Besides his wife he is survived by his sons, Isaac and Harry Read, of near Delaware, two daughters, Ethel, who lives with her brothers, and Lucy of Hatboro, Pa. Also by five brothers, Flock, Boyd, John, Andrew, Clark and one sister, Emily.
Funeral services will be held at the late home Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., D.S.T. in charge of the Rev. C.B. Munn pastor of the Methodist church. Interment will be in Cedar Ridge cemetery.
