EMMA AUGUSTA READ BREED5
576. EMMA AUGUSTA READ5 (Isaac Fonger Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 15 September 1875 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died January 1972 in Brooklyn, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania (Social Security Death Index). It is possible that Emma was also known as Emily. The 1934 obituary for her brother Harry, gives her name as Emily (Blairstown Press, 12 July 1934). The February 1934 obituary for her sister Sue Read Austin gives her name as Mrs. Elmer W. Breed (Blairstown Press, 15 February 1934). Her middle name is given as Augusta by the Latter Day Saints (hereinafter, LDS AFN: 1DH2-WJM) Emma first appears in the census in 1880. She resided with her parents, her great-Uncle John Flock (age 68) and several siblings (John, Susan, Katie, Andrew Harry, and Clark) in the village of Jacksonburg in Blairstown Township. Emma was not yet in school. She and the baby (Clark) stayed at home, whle the older children went to school (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 294D, 17 June 1880).
Emma married on 21 February 1899, at her parents home in Jacksonburg, Elmer William Breed of Brooklyn, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. He was born 17 February 1876 in Brooklyn Township and died in 1942 (LDS AFN: 1DH2-WJM; Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, Genweb). Elmer was son of Robert Fitch Geer Breed (LDS AFN: 9CPP-2G) and Emma Marie Beers (LDS AFN: 1DH2-WF1) of Booklyn Township, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 118, Brooklyn Township, Susquehana County, Pennsylvania, sheets 70 A and B, 7 June 1880). Their wedding was announced in a local Brooklyn paper:
Many of Emma's cousins—the Raubs, Lakes, Voughs and Kinneys—also settled in Susquehanna County. They were the descendants of her great-great uncles, Isaac Read, Sr. 2 (Raub, Lake, Vough) and his brother Aaron Read 2 (Kinney). In 1910 and 1920, Emma and Elmer lived on their farm in Brooklyn Township with their two sons, Robert and Wallace (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 61, Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet 5A, 25 April 1910; 1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 64, Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, sheet 7B, 21 January 1920). They shared their home with their son Wallace and his wife Beatrice in 1930. Elmer and Wallace worked on the family's dairy farm together. The Elmer and Emma had owned the farm since at least 1910 (1930 United States Federal Census, Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, Enumeration District 58-6, sheet 6B, 21 April 1930).
Emma was one of the three editors of The Flocks: Ancestry, Genealogy, and History of nine generations of Flocks in the U.S.A. and Canada. Another editor was her sister-in-law, Levina Van Kirk Read, wife of Flock Read. The book was published in 1938 by the Hackettstown Gazette Publishing Company.
Elmer and Emma are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania (Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania GenWeb).
