READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

577. CLARK EDWARD READ⁵ (Isaac Fonger Read⁴, Isaac Read, III³, John Read², Joseph Read¹), was born October 1879 in Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1960. Clark first appears in the census in 1880 as an infant. He resided with his parents, his great-Uncle John Flock (age 68) and several siblings (John, Susan, Katie, Andrew Harry, and Emma) in the village of Jacksonburg in Blairstown Township (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 294D, 17 June 1880). He married circa 1902, Elizabeth (Last Name Unknown), the daughter of Catherine Hughes. Elizabeth's step-father was Thomas Hughes. She was born 1882 and died 1956. In 1910, Clark and Elizabeth lived at 36 Heddon Place in East Orange, Essex County, New Jersey. They are listed on the census adjacent to the household of Elizabeth's stepfather and mother. Clark was employed as a blacksmith in his own shop. He and Elizabeth owned their home. Elizabeth's new step-father, Thomas Hughes, was employed as a slate roofer. He and Catherine had been married about five years when the census was taken. They rented their home from Clark and Elizabeth; it was located in the same building as the home of Clark and Elizabeth. Clark and Elizabeth had one child, their daughter Nellie (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 172, City of Easst Orange, 4^th Ward, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 16B, 27 April 1910). By 1920, Clark had given up blacksmithing. The advent of the automobile had put many balcksmiths out of business. He and Elizabeth had returned to Warren County and purchased a a farm in the Frelinghuysen Township on the Blairstown Road. The 1920 census shows them as residents of this farm, which had a mortgage on it at the time (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 153, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7A, 19 January 1920). The 1934 obituary of Clark's sister Sue Read Austin, places Clark's residence in Blairstown (Blairstown Press, 15 February 1934). Clark and Elizabeth are buried with Catherine Hughes in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey.

2056. (i.) NELLIE MENTHA READ⁶, was born circa 1903 in New Jersey and died unknown. In 1910, she lived with her parents and maternal grandparents in East Orange New Jersey and attended school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 172, City of Easst Orange, 4^th Ward, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 16B, 27 April 1910). She moved back to Warren County with her parents after 1910. She was living with them in Frelinghuysen Township in 1920 and and was a teacher in the public schools (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 153, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7A, 19 January 1920). She was not a resident of their household in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9A, 9 April 1930).

2057. (ii.) CLARK EDWARD READ, JR.⁶, was born 12 December 1910 in New Jersey and died 19 November 1971. In 1920, Clark lived at home and attended school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 153, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7A, 19 January 1920). By 1930, Clark had completed school and was employed as a laborer by a private school. He still lived at home with his parents on their farm in Blairstown Township. It is possible that he was employed by Blair Academy which was located in Blairstown (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9A, 9 April 1930). Clark married Virginia Ann Oliver on 5 September 1936. She was born circa 1911 (Read 2004). Clark's social security number was issued in New York. He is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Children of Clark Read and Virginia Oliver:
