READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

John K. READ3

59. JOHN K. READ3 (Joseph Read, II2, Joseph Read1) was born between 1800 and 1810 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died before 14 August 1862. In August 1822, John's brother David Read presented a petition to the Sussex County Orphans Court for division of their father's real estate. Joseph Read had died intestate on 11 November 1806. Each of his five sons was due a portion of the family's 161.1 acre farm which was located in Knowlton Township in Sussex County. David petitioned the court because the five brothers (David, Stephen, John, Daniel and Joseph) "hold the same as tenants in common and by reason of the minority of some of the said children no division can be made by agreement between the said petitioner and the other children." The court appointed John Armstrong, Abraham Newman and William Cook, Esquire as commissioners to make the division. John recieved 30.5 acres in two parcels, one of 5 acres and one of 25.5 acres (Sussex County Surrogate Court Records, Division Book B, page 250).

John married Elizabeth West, the daughter of Thomas West, Sr. She was born between 1800 and 1810. John K. Read is listed in the 1830 United States Federal Census as a resident of Wantage Township, Sussex County, New Jersey (page 263). He and Elizabeth had 3 children who were under the age of 10. On 4 December 1832, the land of Thomas West, Sr. was divided between his children: Thomas West and wife Margaret, Catherine West Crisman and husband John, Barbara West Nulton and husband Henry, John West and wife Rebecca, and Elizabeth West Read and husband John (Read, personal communication 2001). The Latter Day Saints International Geneological Index (IGI) places John and Elizabeth in Pennsylvania in 1834. The land records of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania include a deed to John K. Read of Ross Township, Luzerne County dated 18 May 1848, in which John purchased 231 acres in Ross Township from Frederick and Sarah Hartman of Union Township, Luzerne County. The deed was recorded 13 April 1850 (Luzerne County Land Records Deeds Book 49, page 553). John K. Read does not appear as an heir in the settlement of the estate of his first cousin John H. Read3 (James Read2, Joseph Read1), who died intestate, without immediate family on 14 August 1862. The Warren County Surrogate Court named John H. Read's 66 surviving first cousins as his heirs. As John K. Read is not included in the settlement, it is assumed that he died before John H. Read (Warren County, New Jersey, Surrogate Court Records, Orphans Court Minutes).
