RACHEL VAUGHN KIMBEL

SC3. RACHEL VAUGHN1, was born 30 September 1772 in Sussex County, New Jersey and died 26 June 1848, age 75, in Tompkins (now Schuyler) County, New York. She married William Kimble, spelled Cembel in her father's will. He was born 3 May 1770 and died 19 September 1857 in Tompkins (now Schuyler) County, New York (Kern 1938; Schuyler County, New York GenWeb–cemetery transcript). The couple left New Jersey and initially settled in the Town of Ulysses, Cayuga (now Tompkins) County, New York. They appear as residents of Ulysses on the 1800 census (1800 United States Federal Census, Town of Ulysses, Cayuga County, page 578). They lived near the family of Mowbray and Dinah Owen, Dinah was Rachel's sister. By 1820, the Kimbels had moved to the Town of Hector, Tompkins (now Schuyler) County, New York. The census indicates that 5 members of the household were involved in agriculture, they were probably William, Sr., John, Jacob, Henry and William, Jr.. The familiy's near neighbors included Rachel's brother John Vaughn, her step-mother Hannah Vaughn, her half siblings Samuel and William Vaughn and the Kimble's son David. David was listed adjacent to his parents on the census (1820 United States Federal Census, Town of Hector, Tompkins County, page 5). The 1825 New York State Census places the household of William Kimble in the Town of Hector, Schuyler County, New York (Schuyler County, New York GenWeb–census and directories). William appears as the only male in the household who was eligible to vote. He was 55 years old and did not own militia service to the state. There were 7 individuals living in the household, 4 males (William, Sr., Jacob, Henry and William, Jr.) and 3 females (Rachel, Mary and little Rachel, who died in February 1825). The 1840 census lists the household of William Kimball in the Town of Hector, Tompkins County. There were two adults (one male and one female) between the ages of 70 and 79 (born between 1761 and 1770), who would be William and Rachel. And there were two adults (one male and one female) between the ages of 20 and 29 (born 1811 and 1820) who were probably William Kimble, Jr. and his wife. The Kimbles son Henry was born in 1811, but he had a listing in the census for his own household (1840 United States Federal Census, Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York). Rachel and William are buried in Hector Union Cemetery, Town of Hector, Schuyler County, New York (Schuyler County, New York GenWeb–cemetery transcript).

There were two children under the age of 10 (born 1810 through 1820). There was one girl and one boy. These inidivduals are assumed to be Almira Kimble and a unknown son. It is probably not William, who was born in 1820. The census indicates that two people in the household were engaged in agriculture. This would appear to be David and a son. William as an infant was too young to be working in the fields with his father (1820 United States Federal Census, Town of Hector, Tompkins County, page 5). David and Mary are buried in Hector Union Cemetery, Town of Hector, Schuyler County, New York (Schuyler County, New York GenWeb–cemetery transcript). Children of David and Mary Kimble:

The census lists him as the only male in the household between the ages of 16 and 26, and again as a male between the ages of 16 and 18 (which would place his birth between 1802 and 1804). The census indicates that 5 members of the household were involved in agriculture, they were probably William, Sr., John, Jacob, Henry and William, Jr. (1820 United States Federal Census, Town of Hector, Tompkins County, page 5). John left home between the 1820 Federal census and the 1825 New York State Census. He is not listed in his father's household in 1825 (Schuyler County, New York GenWeb–census and directories). The 1825 New York State Census places the household of William Kimble in the Town of Hector, Schuyler County, New York. Mary was one of the two daughters still living at home with her parents at the beginning of 1825. She is listed on the census as an unmarried female between the ages of 16 and 45 (born 1780 through 1809). At the time of the state census she was 19 years old (Schuyler County, New York GenWeb–census and directories).

(9.) JACOB KIMBLE2, was born 5 May 1808 and died 20 January 1827 (Gresko n.d.; Schuyler County, New York GenWeb–cemetery transcript). He appears on the 1820 United States Federal Census as a resident of the household of William Kimbel. The census indicates that 5 members of the household were involved in agriculture, they were probably William, Sr., John, Jacob, Henry and William, Jr. (1820 United States Federal Census, Town of Hector, Tompkins County, page 5). The 1825 New York State Census places the household of William Kimble in the Town of Hector, Schuyler County, New York. Henry was one of the three sons still living at home with his parents. Because he was 14 years old, he was not qualified to vote nor was he subject to militia duty (Schuyler County, New York GenWeb–census and directories). Henry married Catherine Ann Snyder, known as Katy Ann. She was the daughter of Isaac and Sarah (Ogden) Snyder. Katy Ann was born 3 May 1815, in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 2 September 1849 in Hector, Tompkins County, New York. Henry's mother and Catherine's mother were step-sisters. Their household appears on the 1840 census in the Town of Hector. There were six individuals living in the household: Henry, Katy, and their daughter Almira and son Gustavus. There were two other individuals in the household, a male and a female, both between the ages of 11 and 15. Their identity is currently unknown. It is possible that these two individuals were hired help. According to the census, one member of the household was engaged in agriculture (1840 United States Federal Census, Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York, page 436-437). Katy died in 1849 and was buried in Burdett Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Burdett, Town of Hector, Tompkins (now Schuyler) County, New York (Schuyler County, New York GenWeb–cemetery transcript). She owned real estate with a value of $6,000 and had a personal estate of $800. There were two young men living in the household with her, Daniel Vaughn (age 20) and Jacob Vaughn (age 19), they were probably her grandchildren by her son Benjamin Vaughn. Also living in the household was 62 year old Polly Fowler (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 576, 27 July 1860). In 1870, Catherine still lived in Blairstown Township, her post office was Columbia, New Jerwsey. She owned a farm valued at $7,000 and a personal estate valued at $2,000. Catherine's occupation was given as farmer. Eighteen year old Sidney Jane Vaughn lived with Catherine. She may have been one of Catherine's grandchildren. According to the census, Sidney Jane could neither read nor write (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 34, 7 July 1870).
