NOTES

Hannah Read was the third child and eldest daughter of Joseph and Sarah Read. She was born 3 February 1767 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey (Kern 1938). Hannah married Benjamin Ogden, the eldest son of Gabriel and Mary (Shotwell) Ogden. According to family records he was born 10 February 1761, although his tombstone indicates that the date was 11 May 1762 (Armstrong 1979:210; Union Brick Cemetery). Benjamin's younger sister, Elizabeth Ogden, married Hannah's younger brother, John Read.

Benjamin and Hannah Ogden resided in Knowlton Township, Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey. According to Armstrong (1979:208, 212) Benjamin's farm was across the road from his father, Gabriel Ogden's, farm. Gabriel Ogden's farm was across the road from Union Brick Cemetery. Benjamin and Hannah Ogden had at least four children: Amos, Mary, Joseph, and Sarah (Armstrong 1979:210; Stewart 1998; Zerfas 1996-1998). These four children are named in their grandfather, Gabriel Ogden's will (written 1813, probated 1816): "Amos Ogden, Joseph Ogden, Jr. [Joseph Ogden, Sr. was his uncle, Benjamin's younger brother], Mary Howell and Sarah Ogden, children of Benjamin" (Sussex County Surrogate Court Records, hereinafter SCSCR, File 1502S). Only one of the children, Amos Ogden, is named in the settlement of his cousin John Hetty Read's estate in 1865 (Warren County Surrogate Court Records, hereinafter WCSCR, Orphans Court Minutes, Book 6, page 156). Five of Amos's half brother's and sister's (by Daniel Vaughn) are also named in the settlement:

"That the said administrators do pay unto Amos Ogden[,] Samuel Vaughn[,] Benjamin O. Vaughn[,] Hannah wife of Joseph Brown[,] William Vaughn and Amanda wife of Annannias C. Thompson Children of Hannah and of Benjamin Ogden and afterwards of Daniel Vaughn deceased, or to their personal representatives the equal one Sixty Sixth part of the Said ballance[sic] for distribution each amounting to the Sum of Three Hundred and Forty Six Dollars each."

Five of the children of Hannah Read Ogden Vaughn are not listed in the settlement: Mary Ogden Howell (died 1852), Joseph Read Ogden (died 1840), Sarah Ogden Snyder (died 1861), Azubah Vaughn Teeter (died 1858) and Phebe Vaughn Owen (died 1830). Based on the assumption that only those first cousins who were living on 14 August 1862, when John Hetty Read died, were entitled to a portion of the estate, then only Amos Ogden (died 1785), Samuel Vaughn (died 1864), Benjamin O. Vaughn (died 1863), Hannah Vaughn Brown (died 1874), William Vaughn (died 1887) and Amanda Vaughn Thompson (died 1888) were entitled to a share of the estate. The heirs of their deceased siblings were not entitled to a share.

Hannah's first husband, Benjamin Ogden, wrote his will on 9 May 1792, a month after the death of his father-in-law, Joseph Read. The will was witnessed by his younger brother, John Ogden, his mother-in-law, Sarah Read (who died in August 1792), and James Bishop (no known relationship). The will named his wife Hannah and "brothers" Isaac Read and Abraham Lanterman as executors. Isaac Read, Sr. was Hannah Read Ogden's oldest brother and Abraham Lanterman was married to Benjamin Ogden's oldest sister, Sarah (1754-1817). The will left Hannah use of all real and personal property until the children came of age. When the children came of age the estate was to be sold. One third of the estate was to go to Hannah and the other two thirds was to be divided among the children. The sons were to receive two shares each; the daughters were to receive one share each. The children were not named in the will. Benjamin's daughter Sally was not born until 18 November 1792, six months after Benjamin made his will. He and Hannah probably knew that they were expecting another child at the time that Benjamin wrote his will (SCSCR Wills Book 36, page 124; Hutchinson 1942:272).

Benjamin Ogden lived for another two years after he wrote his will. He died 26 August 1794. The will was proved 18 February 1795. Benjamin Ogden left a modest estate of £205.8.1. The estate was appraised by Benjamin Shackleton and Abraham Beschour (ibid.). Benjamin Shackleton was married to Benjamin Ogden's sister, Mary Ogden (1768-1838) and was the brother of Mary Shackleton Read, the wife of Hannah's brother Isaac Read, Sr. (Armstrong 1979:210).

Benjamin Ogden was buried in Union Brick Cemetery on Heller Hill Road in what is currently Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. His single stone was field checked 18 July 1998. It is inscribed with Benjamin's birth and death dates, an epitaph, and the name of the stone carver (a man by the name of Teezel). A DAR revolutionay war flag holder is set by the grave.

Hannah Read Ogden remarried after Benjamin's death. Her second husband was the Rev. Daniel Vaughn. Daniel was born 17 June 1746 in Wales (Stewart 1998; Union Brick Cemetery). He had resided in Knowlton Township, Sussex (now Warren) County since at least 1773 when his name appears on the township tax list (Pascal 1997b; Stryker-Rodda 1972:118). During the American Revolution, he served as a First Lieutenant in Nyce's Company, First Regiment, Sussex County. His muster date was 6 June 1777 (Stryker 1967). Daniel Vaughn was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1785 at the Knowlton Baptist Church. This was the church at Union Brick which sat on the tract occupied by the cemetery. Knowlton Baptist Church was formed in 1754 by settlers who had come from the Kingwood Baptist Church. The Meeting house was built in 1763, the land was purchased on 9 August 1756. Vaughan was the pastor of the church from 1785 until 1800, when the church ceased to exist (Griffith 1904:90-91). There was also a Baptist Church at Schooley's Mountain in Morris County. The church was known as the Rocksbury, or Roxbury, Baptist Church from 1753 until 1768, between 1768 and 1890 it was known as Schooley's Mountain Baptist Church. The name of the church was changed to Mount Olive Baptist Church in 1890. A Mr. Vaughn was the pastor of Schooley's Mountain Baptist Church from 1790 until 1794. It is possible that Daniel Vaughan served both Knowlton and Schooley's Mountain Baptist Churches. If he was the Mr. Vaughn at Schooley's Mountain he left the church the year his first wife, Dinah Watkins Vaughan died (ibid.:78-80; Kelly-Bly 1999; Union Brick). Whether Daniel Vaughan served a church between the demise of Knowlton Baptist in 1800 and his death in 1810 is not known.

Daniel's marriage to Hannah Read Ogden was also a second marriage for Daniel. His first wife, Dinah Watkins, died 1 October 1794. She is buried next to Daniel in Union Brick Cemetery. Daniel and Dinah had eleven children: Jacob, Richard, David, John, Daniel, Elizabeth, Rachel, Lydia, Sarah, Rhoda, and Dinah Vaughn (Union Brick). Hannah and Daniel Vaughn had at least seven children between 1795 and 1810: Samuel, Benjamin, Azubah, Hannah, Phebe, William, and Amanda (SCSCR File 1255S; Stewart 1998; WCSCR Orphan's Court Minutes). Daniel's will named 17 children: Jacob, Richard, Daniel, and John (sons by Dinah); Samuel, Benjamin, and William (sons by Hannah); Elizabeth France, Rachel Kimbel (spelled Cembel in the will), Lydia Manning, Sarah Manning, Rhoda Brown and Dinah Owens (daughters by Dinah); and Azubah, Hannah, Phebe and Amanda (daughters by Hannah) (SCSCR File 1255S). Daniel and Dinah's son, David, had predeceased his father. At least five of Hannah and Daniel's chidren (
viz. Samuel, Benjamin, Hannah, William, and Amanda) were alive when their cousin John Hetty Read died in 1862 (See discussion above. WCSCR Orphans Court Minutes, Liber 6, folio 156-157).

Daniel Vaughn died 29 May 1810 and was buried in Union Brick Cemetery next to his first wife, Dinah Watkins. His stone has been replaced with a modern brass marker set flush with the ground. Dinah's stone is original and lists all of the children she and Daniel had together. The graves were field checked on 18 July 1998. Daniel's marker reads:

Daniel Vaughn

Dinah's stone is original and lists all the children she and Daniel had together. Like Benjamin Ogden's stone, this stone was also carved by J.S. Teezel. It was field checked 18 July 1998.

Daniel's son, Richard Vaughn, and Hannah's brother, Isaac Read, Sr., acted as executors of Daniel Vaughn's estate (SCSCR File 1255S). This was the second time Isaac acted as an executor for one of Hannah's husbands. Daniel's will was witnessed by Ira Kerr, Hannah's nephew (and Isaac Read's son-in-law), Abraham Lanterman (who was married to Sarah Ogden, the sister of Hannah's first husband) and John Lanterman. An inventory of the estate was taken on 31 May 1810 by William Allen and Abraham Lanterman. The estate was valued at $1,001.53. Additional personal property was add to the inventory on three later dates. On 6 June 1810, $63.70 was added. Another $15.85 was added on 28 March 1811. And the final amount of $44.05 was added on 1 April 1811. This brought the total value of the estate to $1,135.13. Daniel's will provided his "well beloved wife Hannah" with one-third of the household goods and chattels.

Most of Hannah's children left Warren County. Mary Ogden Howell and her husband, Garret Howell, emigrated to Jerseyville, Ancaster Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada (Howell and Phethean 2000). Amos Ogden, Sarah Ogden Snyder, Samuel Vaughn, Azubah Vaughn Teeter, Hannah Vaughn Owen Brown, Phebe Vaughn Brown, William Vaughn and Amanda Vaughn Thompson all settled in Tompkins County, New York. Joseph Read Ogden settled in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Only Benjamin O. Vaughn remained in Warren County. Hannah migrated to New York with her children. Several of her step-children (Daniel's children by his first wife Dinah Watkins) also settled in Tompkins County, New York. They included Rachel Vaughn Kimble, Lydia Vaughn Manning, Sarah Vaughn Manning, Rhoda Vaughn Brown, Dinah Vaughn Owens and John Vaughn. Her step-children were all in New York by 1810. Hannah and her eldest son Samuel appear to have arrived in the Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York between 1816 and 1818. Samuel's daughter Hannah was born in Sussex County in 1816, his son William Vaughn was born in New York in 1818. Hannah brought her four youngest children with her to New York. They were Hannah, Phebe, William and Amanda Vaughn, and they ranged in age from about 14 to 8 years of age. Hannah Read Ogden Vaughn's houseold appears on the 1820 United States Federal Census. She is listed on the census as a resident of the Town of Hector. Her neighbors and she were listed as follows: George B. Owens, Samuel Vaughn (her son), George Owens, Gilbert Owens, Hannah Vaughn, John Vaughn (her step-son), William Kimble (husband of her step-daughter Rachel Vaughn), and David Kimble (Rachel's son). Table 1 summarizes the residents of Hannah's home in 1820:

Hannah, Phebe and William Vaughn all married between 1820 and 1825. The 1825 New York State Census reports 3 individuals living in Hannah's household in the Town of Hector. They were probably Hannah and her daughter Amanda. The young man may have been hired help. Hannah's son William had his own household in Hector and no longer resided with Hannah. The male in the census was not qualified to vote, nor was he subect to Militia duty (Schuyler County New York GenWeb - census and directories). The latter would place his age at under 18 years, too young to have been one of Hannah's sons. See Table 2 for a summary of Hannah's household in 1825:

By 1830, all of Hannah's children were married. Three more of her chldren had migrated to Tompkins County, New York from New Jersey. Her son Amos Ogden and daughter Sally Ogden Snyder appear to have arrived between 1824 and 1826. Sally's daughter Mary Snyder was born in Susex County, New Jersey on 9 May 1823. Amos's son John Ogden died in Sussex County on 6 September 1823. Then on 17 March 1826, Sally's daughter Susanna Snyder was born in the Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York. Hannah's daughter Azubah Vaughn Teeter arrived in New York between 16 April 1826 (when her daughter Caroline Teeter was born in Sussex County) and 31 May 1828 (when her son Elias Teeter was born in the Town of Groton, Tompkins County, New York. Hannah appears to have been living with her youngest son Wililam Vaughn in 1830. William lived in the Town of Hector. His household numbered four individuals: William, his wife Lavina, their daughter Azubah and Hannah. Table 3 presents a summary of William's household in 1830:
